  1. And if you're lucky. you won't go to jail for contempt of court until the judge decides you've either told the truth or suffered enough. Owned by Remi #?

  3. Well, perhaps this is true, Andre... but I think it's also important to consider that in high stress, and possibly high speed circumstances, even someone with the best possible attitude has a "statistical" chance of screwing up. The high percentage of pilot error fatalities might reflect more on the chances of anyone, regardless of attitude, surviving a mistake. So what are the odds that even the most careful skydiver will drop the ball? Owned by Remi #?

  7. Ouch... be careful, Prof. You've been given your last chance by god. I'm guessing that's a lot like getting a "your one warning" from Billvon. Owned by Remi #?

  9. Your argument works 2 ways. If there was a god with intent to design, why are we the only planet in our solar system with intelligent life (that we've identified anyway)? A "designer" could easily make Mars or Jupiter support life like ours. It happens that we evolved from a set of perfect and imperfect circumstances. A designer could overcome the problems you describe. Owned by Remi #?

  12. Maybe not a sad end. He was independent and had a long life, right? A long time ago I had a neighbor in her 90's who was very independent. She mowed her lawn with a mechanical push mower and gathered leaves in the fall in a small basket, carrying them to the curb a basket at a time. I offered to help her a few times and she rebuffed me. I tried to help on the side and when she noticed she complained. One morning after a huge snow storm I went to open my front door to go to work and met some resistance. I thought it was just the snow and I gave the door a big shove but it wasn't snow, it was Lilly. She'd frozen to death on my porch. I sat out there in the snow with her for a while before I called the police. I wondered if she'd come to my house for help or because she was confused. I decided it didn't matter. I would have helped her if I could have. I could not have helped her as it was. Owned by Remi #?
  13. I did a recurrency jump as an experienced jumped with a TI who did everything he could to "convince" me he was going to dock on the recurrency tandem near us...... He was yanking my chain but after we landed I wasn't sure if changing my skivvies or hugging him should be the priority. I chose the hug. Hoping he'd get wet. Owned by Remi #?
  14. I think that's a well written, very straight forward article. I'm not sure what your intent is regarding it's relationship to my post though. Owned by Remi #?
  15. If that's really the intent, then I think it's a wise choice. I think they also have had to have included some statistical analysis of how likely such a low reserve deployment is to be meaningful too though, right? Edit: Sorry... I just wanted to say more. I think that the Cypres is very well engineered. I don't remember much of the general engineering part of my training but I do think that a bit more had to have gone into the decision about what altitude to have the thing fire. If I was designing the thing (and no, I don't think I can improve on it, I'm just thinking about my thought process) my first thoughts would be: 1. What's the goal? In the case of the Cypres I think it was to cut the reserve closing loop for an incapacitated / unconscious person. 2. Given all other parts of this system work correctly and there is an unimpeded reserve opening within TSO limits, how much altitude do we need? 3. How would the body position of an incapacitated / unconsious person affect the above? 4. Since I can't predict all the possible body positions of an incapacitated person, I'll go with unconscious as my standard. 5. If I want 100% success given that everything else works perfectly, what altitude should I choose? 6. Is that altitude within the average skydivers ability to "save themselves"? If it is, should I lower the above percentage? How many "perfect" reserve deployments are there? If not many, should I lower the above percentage? The thing I'm thinking is... it's a good idea to include thinking about the point of no return in the design of the Cypres, but I doubt it could be more than some part of the decision. If I discovered that x (whatever number I decided would be acceptable) percentage would survive if their closing loops were cut at 500 feet, but that y (whatever number seemed reasonable to me) percentage would not survive if they deployed unassisted below 750 feet, I would choose 750 feet. 16. I've read them and reall, really liked them too. I'm currently "re-reading" them via audio books. The audible.com versions are also very nicely narrated. Owned by Remi #?
  17. So you're saying you prefer to leave your jump number inaccurate because you don't want it to be inaccurate? I couldn't resist, sorry. Owned by Remi #?
  18. I've recently been mocked as a "keyboard nazi" so take what I have to say as such.... but: 1. You never "have" to buy a new canopy 2. You never "need" a smaller chute That said, if you're a novice at 185 then something like a 190 or 210 is "normal" and easy to sell even after you've racked up 50 jumps on it. Owned by Remi #?

  21. So.... if I have to get up at 7am tomorrow and I go to bed at 11pm tonight, then I have 8 hours to sleep. Which means that I have to sleep fpr 4 hours to get half way there.... and 2 hours to get half way to that... and 1 hour to get half way to that.... and I could go on and on and on and on always sleeping half way to the next goal. I guess I won't ever wake up. Owned by Remi #?
