So I just logged reserve/emergency pack job #4000..
labrys replied to riggergreg's topic in Gear and Rigging
Statistics are fun, huh? If you rough guess an average of 50 jumps per pack job, that means about 1 in a 1000 jumps results in a save. Owned by Remi #? -
Wow. I asked you what your specific requirements and / or thoughts are about what qualifies as a "spin" and now you're suggesting that I have no idea what the TLOs are for the students I get and whether or not I even have a clue who I should go to at my DZ if I have doubts or questions? I was wondering what your thought process was. I wasn't wondering who my chief instructor was. Owned by Remi #?

Still ignoring the part where he spent 2 days with the team prior to that, eh? Jeez, man. If we believed the papers we would be spending all of our time trying to figure out and correct why so many people went in because their "chutes failed to open" It's media. It might be bullshit. It might win the lottery and be correct. Take it as such. Owned by Remi #?

I did modify it a bit: Three base jumpers were climbing on a cell phone tower - Steve, Bruce and Jed. Steve falls off at 100 feet and is killed instantly. As the ambulance takes the body away, Bruce says, "Someone should go and tell his wife." Jed says, "OK, I'm pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I'll do it." Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of beer. Bruce says, "Where did you get that, Jed?" "Steve's wife gave it to me," Jed replies. "That's unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you beer?" Well, not exactly", Jed says. "When she answered the door, I said to her, 'You must be Steve's widow'." She said, "No, I'm not a widow!" And I said, "I'll bet you a case of beer you are." Owned by Remi #?

Do you think a canopy courses should be required?

I think you're very right there. My opinion based on the fact that I am, or hope to think was, very guilty. Owned by Remi #? -

I really agree with that. I've hired a tunnel coach for myself twice. One delivered exactly what he was paid for and I had no complaints. I did not tip him. The other went well out of his way to do more than I'd agreed to pay him and he got a tip. When I took my niece and nephew to the tunnel and saw their "unpaid" coach make a huge effort to teach each of them according to what he saw as their strengths and weaknessnes I was impressed by his extra effort and tipped him as well. I think a tip really means more, though, if you can tell the person you're tipping why you're tipping them. It lets them know that their effort hasn't gone unnoticed vs being some mechanical reaction. Owned by Remi #?

Do you think a canopy courses should be required?
labrys replied to JohnDeere's topic in Safety and Training
I've taken Scott's basic course twice and advanced (accuracy) once. In the classroom part of the first basic course I felt a little disappointed because I wasn't "learning" anything that hadn't already been taught to me during my initial training. When we got out of the classroom and started flying, I was amazed at how much more meaningful the instruction was than I thought and how much more focused I was when all I was doing was thinking about my canopy. In an ideal training program the ISP really does teach all these skills, or most of them. But it really did make a huge difference to me to spend a day reviewing and really, really thinking about it. I guess if they're a natural then the instruction some people get with the ISP is enough. I think many more people benefit from taking a little time to focus. Not saying I think it should be mandatory. Edit: Meant to say, it wasn't necessarily the course that sucked. Maybe the person taking it really did already have the things taught nailed. Or maybe they thought they did and weren't willing to listen. Owned by Remi #? -

What's on your wish list???
labrys replied to gsxrjumper720's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's a great list. I really like the ones in bold. My favorite is the suggestion of canopy control class. That's an awesome suggestion for a new jumper and something a family member could easily see as doing something to keep a loved one safer. Owned by Remi #? -
He did (story given) act out of impulse. He acted (story given) on the words and deeds of his wife. If he acted harshly and killed this guy then yes, he's guilty of being impulsive and rash... But, just my opinion here. he's not guilty of murder, his wife is. Owned by Remi #?

The wording is little more fragile than that, isn't it? In the case as given the guy didn't act "while" his wife was raped but only on her word...after the fact with no immedient evidence to him. If he acted in rage, believing her... I can forgive his action while not thinking it the best course. If she decided to deceve him outright then I do think she deserves to bear the punishment. Owned by Remi #?

Not speaking for the person you're asking... but my opinion is that if the guy really believed that his wife had been raped he should be given every benefit of doubt and consideration in a case like this. And if can be proven that his wife tried to cover her deception by crying rape at the heat of the moment when she was not being raped then she should face the consequences for her actions and be required to suffer the punishement. At least on the surface, it doesn't appear that this guy was a rapist. It appears that he was decieved by his lover and killed out of right by the husband. If that's true, the woman he was having an affair with does deserve the due... Then again, with so many question unanswered, who knows? Owned by Remi #?

Did jesus say that or did matthew? And no, I don't have any idea who really said it, i'm not attriibuting it to either. I also don't believe that an increase in "wickedness" 2000 years ago can be related to an increase in "evil" 2000 years later...or that an unidentified prophet speaking on behalf of another unidentified prophet 2 millenia ago should dictate to me what behavior is moral or correct right now, right here. If you believe so dearly that your god and his son spoke so clearly and freely 2000 years ago then good for you.... but do you have any theories about why your god decided to stop publishing 2000 years ago and hasn't offered a bit of advise since? What part of the bible eplains that? Is there a passage that says something like, well... there it is, that's all I have to say about that.... and you'll be on your own for a few thousand years now... don't fuck up? Do you see my question? Owned by Remi #?

Salvation Army Red Kettles & Credit Card Donations (Dave Ramsey show)
labrys replied to nerdgirl's topic in Speakers Corner
I find it very odd that anyone would consider the idea "morally bad." Those donation points have always been opportunistic in both their placement and timing... and I think that's also capatalistic and smart and completely acceptable. Adding ease of payment to timing and placement makes sense to me. Owned by Remi #? -
