Spizzarko.....have you had any adverse events in your elective canopy stalls and their recoveries?? In terms of stall recovery.....is'letting go' of input really a bad thing.....what can you expect from a docile canopy 'letting go' as opposed to a smooth release of control inputs... (edited to make sense !!)

Is it good practice....high above a hard deck...to actually 'stall' the canopy.....?? I mean of course I have practiced to just above the stall point.....but is it a good idea to actually push it to a complete stall......on rears....prior to attempting rear riser landings?? Any benefit? Or is a 'close to stall' attempt sufficient
-
I didnt think about that...prob because I let go of my fronts a while before its critical to flare.......very good point though in this threads context.
-
Ok ....I hear what ya sayin.....have the brakes unstowed ....just in case ! but fly on the risers....all the way down. Do people do this at all....not as a learning tool.....but as a preferred method of flying the canopy? Also....granted ...a very critical time for this setup is the landing... If attempting a rear riser landing and overcooking it......could you practically be bailed out by having the toggles in your hand...? would you ahve enough time /or would any toggle input make any difference to the outcome? (assuming a straight in landing where the rears have stalled out the canopy at a nominal flare height)

I'm 6ft 3 and about 220 lbs without gear. I bought my first rig at about 50 jumps and had it made to fit me......I'm very glad I did that, its quite comfy and handles etc are right where they should be.....finding hire rigs that offer the same ability a is not easy! I also decided to choose a 'conservative' canopy a 215 square canopy.......whilst this was the butt of a few jokes at the time centred around flying a 'bus' ....I have learned so so much about flying it ....because...I'm not afraid to fly it ! like I prob would be with an inappropritely loaded main....ask your instructors about what size is best for you but I really believe putting some time on a slightly larger canopy will pay you back alot down the line. Also consider your riser width size and getting 'large' three rings if you are a bigger guy....sure the smaller ones are rated for alot but I have had a few really banger openings and I think over time the stress you put on your rig as a bigger guy needs to be addressed... If I had to reorder my first rig again....knowing what I do know....the only difference I would have made is in the container....I think the Mirage G3/G4 are really well engineered rigs for the bigger guys... Just my 2...take it or leave it

Just been doing some reading on some pretty basic canopy control and a thought came into my head....granted its probably very stupid....but its there in my head !! How many ( if any people) fly their canopies with no input from the control lines....ie brakes stowed....all the way I'm not talking about highly loaded canopies or high performance canopies, just my big ass docile 9 cell...but just using riser turns....and flare using rears only....no toggles. Would this be a 'bad ' thing to do for a few jumps....to get very used to flying canopies on risers. Of course there is the whole issue of having toggles to get away from potential collisons or bail you out for landing.....so I'm talking a series of conservative jumps...away from the 'usual' crowded landing areas. Anybody doing this/does this...?? Or is this just really dumb ???

Can you explain this to me please..?

Do skydivers care about safety? Bill Booth

Interesting.... So you think that your reserve sizing should be independant and separate to your choice of main... Thats new thinking to me, and I understand the logic....I'm very interested. How do you think that affects 'what to expect' if you do have a two out....?? -

In view of this thread....whats peoples opinion/experiences flying radically different main /reserve combos' in a two out...?? Whilst its known that radically different main/reserve combos would probably make flying a two out configuration 'difficult' at least......another train of thought says that main/reserve outs may fly badly/unpredictably anyway.....so just make sure your reserve is as big , docile and dependable as possible. I remember watching the videos and reading about the 'dual square project' that PD ( I think) did which I think concluded that the best thing is to have similar size main and reserves.... Interested to hear others experience/thoughts/theories in this context -
Dont even get us Brits started on this thread..... I learned more insults in two un 'bleeped' shows of Jerry Springer than I have heard in my lifetime.....quite descriptive as well In a true 'across' the pond show of collaberative insulting I will leave you with my latest insult... I believe the former word is a 'traditional' US brush off and the latter a well known English Insult to the fairer sex Whatever... Minger...( pronounced :- Ming - err) (Whilst 'insulting' you need to make an W with your hands followed by an M....in the correct sequence of course....confusing if you are from Kansas....)

Have to say I have been seriously tempted for a while....as I am umming and awwing about downsizing to a smaller canopy and smaller rig... I have heard nothing but good things ......and damn... 4 weeks people....4 WEEKS !

That looks like a WHOLE lotta fun ! As long as the pilot gives some warning.......what a fun exit to do

A few questions about my first camera helmet
Zoter replied to FFlyer's topic in Photography and Video
I had the same questions CF looks like CF !! it has that distinctive weave. GF looks smooth....no weave. Structurally....you should be more concerned with the inner lining.....which aint very much... I dont think you can expect too much protection from impact with the outer shell in either....its the amount of padding in the liner that makes the difference. That said I guess they are better than a plastic shell. CF is stronger than GF....however it also fractures into much more lethal splinters when it fails (because its tougher) If you are looking at a helmet in skydiving for anything other than very minor impact resistance, bumps, scrapes etc.....either the GF , CF version are not the ones to go for ! ( that goes the same for other GF and CF helmets with the same amount of lining....ie most of them) I heard also that if you buy second hand ...avoid the 2K model that has no outer shell on the side the cam box is mounted........someone out there is still walking around with a nice imprint of a sony camcorder on the left side of his head after a rough landing. Just what I have learned/researched in my hunt for the best helmet...If I have gotten it wrong please correct me. -
How do you keep your feet and legs out of the shot?? I tried that on other dives but they always drift in and out of the shot.... Do you fly so the Tandem pair is 'behind' you...ie you have to look 'behind' you to get the shot......?
