For the ladies: should a guy initiate a handshake with a woman?
skydiver30960 replied to skydiver30960's topic in The Bonfire
Yahoo search points out a couple websites that list this duplicity of handshaking as an older, more traditional custom. One specifically attributes it to a "naval tradition" which would make sense since her (my mom's) side of the family is steeped in the Navy. Elvisio "yahoo, ALMOST as good as dz.com" Rodriguez -
For the ladies: should a guy initiate a handshake with a woman?
skydiver30960 replied to skydiver30960's topic in The Bonfire
That's kinda the reason for the poll: it's one of the many "old school" mannerisms that my proud momma taught me when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and one of the few that I genuinely don't understand. But, on the other hand, it seems to be one that maybe proves out a little bit in the real world. In a room full of people, most guys are right there with the handshake, and lots of ladies are too. But there are also the ladies that don't seem to thrilled to shake hands, and I always wondered if maybe there was something to what mom always said... So, being that dz.com is my first (and often only) stop for the gathering of arcane information and opinion, I thought I'd see what y'all thought... Elvisio "just wonderin'" Rodriguez -
Congrats on the job offers! I dunno, I enjoyed my time in Chicago. But, it WAS summertime. And it WAS only three months. And, the traffic DID suck. Elvisio "windy city" Rodriguez

For the ladies: should a guy initiate a handshake with a woman?
skydiver30960 replied to skydiver30960's topic in The Bonfire
This is one from the "Wayback Machine" When my mom was "raising me right" she taught me all kinds of interesting nuances about being polite with the ladies. Examples: when walking down the sidewalk, the man should always walk between the woman and the traffic (supposedly to protect her?). When meeting a woman for a date ALWAYS bring something (flowers, candy, whatever). Another one was: a man should always shake hands with another man when introduced, but when meeting a woman the man should wait for the woman to initiate the handshake; this was supposedly to keep the woman from being uncomfortable about being touched by someone she wasn't comfortable with yet. So waddaya think? Does this still hold? Or is this outdated in today's more forward society, and men should feel comfortable initiating handshakes with men and women? That you got dizzy right afterword? (And I don't mean from the smell!) I wonder if there's some physiological reason for it, but it happens to me all the time. I figure the burp/fart decreases the pressure in my abdominal cavity so much that I get some kind of temporary hypotension. Waddaya think? Elvisio "feel one brewing, afraid I'll pass out" Rodriguez

Sipping vs. chugging is the important distinction. If you're just working on it all day long, 5 liters sould be OK. Chugging that much, or a bunch more however, COULD cause extreme hyponatremia, also called "water intoxication". The sudden drop in the relative sodium and protein content in your bloodstream allows fluid to leak from your vessels into the intercellular spaces, causing (among other issues) brain swelling. There was a contest at a radio station one time where contestants raced to see who could drink two gallons of water the fastest. Some doctor or nurse even called in during the contest to tell them it was unsafe, but the radio employees thought it was a joke so they didn't pay attention. Sure enough, the winner died. Water intoxication is actually more common in babies, when new parents who just don't know any better keep shoving insane amounts of water into their newborn. A baby has such a small blood volume that it's easier to put them over the edge. Adults really have to try hard to die this way. But 5 liters/one gallon over the course of the day should be OK. Just make sure your boss doesn't think you're slackin' off with too many potty breaks! Elvisio "fluid/electrolyte balance is important" Rodriguez

Joe Says I'm UnAmerican Because I've never Seen...

Actually... the man speaks the truth, despite his blood alcohol level. One of the best movies of all time. (the 80's version, I mean). Good news for both of you: it FINALLY came out on DVD, something like just a couple weeks ago. It's number one on my Netflix queue. "Very Long Wait." Dammit. I don't know the particulars of your case. But remember that it's really easy to save a life. Rolling someone who is vomiting on their side so their airway stays open until EMS arrives, doing CPR on a collapsed cardiac arrest victim, or just being a witness to make sure someone who has already had an awful night doesn't get any worse can be all it takes. Then you can spend the rest of your life knowing that you really made a difference for someone that night, instead of spending the rest of your life wondering if you could've been the one to make a difference. The rate of survival in a cardiac arrest situation goes down by 10% for every minute post-arrest without CPR. The average police/fire/ems response time can be significant, especially when call volumes are high (i.e. at 2AM). The AHA is stressing the importance of rapid, uninterrupted CPR. CPR doesn't restart the heart, but it does maintain a baseline of oxygenation that really can save a life. Elvisio "just a thought" Rodriguez

Quote Lasik -> fine by the next day, but with a flap that can come loose at any time exposing your gooey inner eye to the hard cruel world. Quote Is this true? Does the flap never heal? I figured it'd take a while since the blood supply to that part of the eye is so slight, but NEVER? Elvisio "huh? I missed that part" Rodriguez

One thing I always used to keep in mind (I'm on the wagon right now): remember that anytime you move your hands in or out, you change your attitude and fall rate and make the videographer work harder. I've worked with TI's who use every single gesture in the book in rapid succession. The result is a video that is more about the instructor than the student, and is out of frame about half the time since the vidiot is working so hard due to all the fallrate changes. I'm smiling the whole time, thumbs up or whatever, watching the altimeter, and giving a firm waveoff.... Elvisio "they paid the big bucks let it be about them" Rodriguez

A couple thoughts: no blood trail since his heart wasn't beating anymore. Some would still come out from the pressure of gravity, but not too much. Also, my guess is that his feet aren't competely torn up because they're barely touching the ground in the pictures, with the truck stopped. The flow of air under the trailer would blow his body up a little like the mudflaps, helping keep the feet off the ground.' Waddaya think? Elvisio "priority four" Rodriguez

I think you all are right. It's an incredible gift, AND it's a gift you should have an unalienable right to decide whether or not to give. The organs you donate could potentially alter or save the lives of several people; it could be your greatest legacy, even if nobody knows the results. But if you aren't comfortable with the process, you shouldn't have to do it. It's your body, for better or worse. Keep in mind that there are more levels than just "yes" or "no". You can specify what tissues/organs you want harvested, as well as how the donations will be used. i.e. one of my loved one's living will states she wants to donate organs but NOT tissues. I don't understand why she draws that particular line, but respect her right to do so. Elvisio "PLEASE sign the damn card" Rodriguez

Shoulda rammed his ass. Definitely. Besides, what kind of pussy carries a .22? I mean I'm glad he did in this case since a bigger round would've put you at greater risk, but c'mon! Elvisio "" Rodriguez
