Although published a couple decades after Starship Troopers, the first book that came to my mind was The Forever War. Same idea. Elvisio "good stuff" Rodriguez -
Overall, how was the movie? I really liked Skeleton Crew, and would love to go see The Mist. But King has a long history of his horror stories absolutely flopping in the theater (i.e. It (oh God it was so bad), the Stand, Christine, and so many more). His dramas have done well, though (Green Mile, Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption). One of the best things about the story (just like the original or "real" ending to Shawshank Redemption), is that it's an open ending; you know what the protagonist plans to do but they haven't been successful yet. Your post sounds like they've done what happens so often when such endings are moved to the theater; the public doesn't like it too much and demands a nice neat, complete ending. If so, rats. So, how was it? Elvisio "contemplating a matinee" Rodriguez

Only AFTER playing the game did I see this part. NOW, I understand. Elvisio "keep trying, though" Rodriguez

Nothing wrong at all, just good luck finding one that can cook AND likes to put out. When I made my selection, I went for one that's good in the sack. Good cooking would just make me fatter than I already am. With skills like hers, I can be happy with Ramen noodles. Virginia Tech at Virginia Ahh.... it is a weekend that will decide bragging rights for many a rivalry. I graduated from Tech, I work at UVA. Needless to say, I'm a hunted man no matter where I go. You better be watching your TV, dammit. EDIT: it's halfitme and so far this game has been freakin AWESOME! Elvisio "torn between two nations" Rodriguez -
Won't sign a traffic ticket? That's a tasering!
skydiver30960 replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
Officers, time to chime in: does the law in your jurisdiction allow for/ require the arrest of an individual who doesn't sign a ticket? I live in VA, and I was under the impression (though not sure about it) that it really didn't amount to a hill of beans whether or not you signed the ticket, you were getting charged one way or the other. EDIT: Bigun answered this for me while I was typing I guess you could also state the cop wasn't going to arrest him, just get him cuffed and in the back of his unit while he searched the vehicle, using the motorist's "unusual" behavior as probable cause? Both parties are to blame for this one. The motorist was a prick and DID move toward his vehicle like he was going to leave. But the officer completely overreacted IMO. For me it's the whole "severity of the action vs. the consequences of nonaction" thingy: taser a perp trying to drive away from the scene of a murder or assault? Sure. Taser a driver who may be guilty of speeding with no other indications of reckless driving? Not so sure. OTOH, you can't just let people stroll away from a traffic stop; it completely takes all the power away from the officer to enforce the law. Yeah, this whole situation sucks ass. I appreciate the taser as a very effective tool for law enforcement. I also notice that the overuse and abuse of tasers has been in the news an AWFUL lot lately... the worst part is I'm sure most cops are perfectly appropriate with their use of the taser. It's the same way with Fire/Rescue, it's the same way with skydiving; hell, its the same way with everything. Elvisio "nuff said" Rodriguez -

Yeah, I saw it in a terminal while travelling. It was pretty slick. ...unfortunately. Overall, it was pretty misleading. BUT, it did a good job of targeting tired, cramped, angry airline travellers and giving them a "culprit" for all their delays and headaches! Elvisio "it was like CARS, only on crack" Rodriguez -
I'm going to miss working in the ER on Black Friday. It was always one of our busiest days for "weird" stuff like people with head-lacs from their SUV tailgates hitting them in the head while loading their trunks, people dropping heavy gifts on their toes, the inevitable pedestrian vs. shopping cart collisions during the opening-time charge to the good deals. I know I know, bad form to be getting entertainment from the misery of others. It just made for a welcome change from the usual stuff we dealt with every day. Elvisio "be careful out there, folks" Rodriguez

Regardless of whether or not it was illegal according to the laws of New Jersey, it sends absolutely the wrong message to the general public who will undoubtedly see these pics. Somebody's (hopefully) going to end up with their asses in a sling over these pics. I'm a volunteer firefighter and rescue squad medic. I ALSO am not afraid to stroll into a Hooters and down some beer and wings while the waitresses pretend to be interested in me so I'll tip heavy. But I also understand that these are two parts of my life that just don't mix. Whenever I'm in public I'm painfully aware of where I'm going and what I'm wearing (i.e. clothes that identify me as a firefighter or medic) when I go there. I won't go NEAR a bar in anything that identifies me as either; I won't even buy beer at the grocery store. And I try to remember that it doesn't matter what I think about the establishment, but what the (mostly straight-laced and conservative) public thinks about those establishments. Illegal: maybe, not sure. Very bad form: you got it. Elvisio "stepping down from the soapbox" Rodriguez

From: http://www.nysgtsc.state.ny.us/emer-ndx.htm#approached: "What should I do if I am approached by an emergency vehicle with its light and sirens going? When approached (from the front or rear) by an emergency vehicle whose light and siren are activated the driver of every other vehicle must yield the right of way. In yielding the right of way, you must drive immediately to the right hand edge or curb of the roadway, parallel to the roadway, and clear of any intersection. You must stop and remain stopped until the emergency vehicle or vehicles have passed, unless otherwise directed by a police officer. (See Section 1144 of the Vehicle & Traffic Law.) " (This is a NY state thingy, most states will have similar rules) Basically, this is it in a nutshell. To specifically answer your question about being at an intersection: move to the right and stop if possible, but if the intersection is full on your side and you therefore cannot move to the right, remain stopped where you are. Do NOT enter the intersection until all emergency vehicles have completely cleared the intersection. Don't try to "beat them across the intersection." IMO, DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, proceed into an intersection against the red light to clear the way for an emergency vehicle. Most responders will cut their siren if a boulevard blocks their access to the oncoming lanes and they cannot get around you. DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, move to the left into oncoming traffic. The only possible exception I can think of to this rule would be if a vehicle was approaching you from the rear and other emergency vehicles (police or other vehicles already at a crash scene) were completely controlling traffic in the upcoming intersection. tylenol= bad for liver. ibuprofen= bad for kidneys. You can take them at the same time, but if you did that you'd still have a couple hours between doses when you'd be in pain. By alternating the meds every couple hours you can keep your level of pain relief reasonably constant. Elvisio "and they're BOTH bad for your gut" Rodriguez

So far so good for me too. I just leave it where it is, don't travel with it to other people's TVs or whatever, and do a little "happy Xbox" dance before each time I turn it on. HIJACK: Bioshock is AWESOME. Elvisio "fuck splicers" Rodriguez

One of the bands at the WFFC a few years ago was handing out free "t-shirts" to girls who showed their ta-tas on stage. This was how they were made, with the band name embroidered on it. Interesting look. Elvisio "oy" Rodriguez
