  1. "Jumping the shark" generally refers to when a television series has lost its edge and does something drastic to try and improve ratings. It's a direct reference to the show "Happy Days" when The Fonz, on water skis, jumped over a shark. I've used the term here to indicate postwhoring turns for the worse. 2. Oh, and honorable mention goes to the following: 11. You stick around for a few months/years after posting your "official goodbye" here. I jumped the shark here back before they did away with user titles. 7. Here's one of my favorites (Cora requests it frequently): Tamale Pie Ingredients- Filling: * 1 pound lean ground turkey * 1 cup chopped onion * 1 large green bell pepper, chopped * 1 large can (15 ounces) tomato sauce * 1 large can (28 ounces) tomatoes, cut up * 1 can (16 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained * 1 small can (4 ounces) sliced ripe olives * 2 cloves garlic, minced * 1 tablespoon sugar * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 2 heaping teaspoons chili powder * dash black pepper * several healthy dashes of cayenne pepper (if you want it spicy) * 1 cup grated Cheddar or Mexican blend cheese Crust: * 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 2 cups cold water * 1/2 teaspoon chili powder * 1 tablespoon butter or margarine * 1/2 cup grated Cheddar or Mexican blend cheese, for topping (optional) PREPARATION: Brown ground turkey with onions and green pepper; drain well. Add tomato sauce, tomatoes, corn, olives, garlic, sugar, salt, chili powder and black pepper. Heat to boiling; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for about 20 minutes, or until thickened. Add cheese; stir until cheese is melted. Set filling aside. In a saucepan, combine cornmeal, salt, water and chili powder. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick. Stir in butter. Spread half of the mixture into a baking dish, about 12- x 8-inches. Spoon filling over bottom crust; spoon remaining cornmeal mixture over filling. Bake at 375° for 45 minutes. If desired, sprinkle 1/2 cup cheese over the crust about 5 minutes before casserole is done. I usually double the amounts in this recipe and eat the excess filling as a stew until the pie is done baking. It lasts for a few days, and you still have the pie to eat.
  8. I saw Rocky Horror Picture Show eons ago, and I went to it with the correct expectations. It's more than a movie, and audience participation was/is expected. However, "Flyboys", "Crash", "The Departed", "The Illusionist" etc. are not movies I a) expect people to talk continuously through and b) bring their amped up 5- and 6-year-olds to. This post wasn't a poll, but I'm getting the feeling that there's a general disdain for people who go to movies to see the film playing and not the mayhem created by people who "do what they want". Am I alone in wanting people to shut the eff up and go home if they want to talk through a movie? 9. It's not just cell phones, though. It's people who comport themselves in such a manner as to present the image that they would really rather be at home chatting it up on the sofa while Jerry Springer hosts their kin. 10. This isn't a race issue. I'm noticing people from all walks of life who feel it is their right to talk through the movie, often about subjects that have nothing to do with the film they have paid money to disrupt. I don't get it. Why not wait for the DVD to come out so you are disrupting nobody but you and your family and/or friends? 11. the silent, attentive and respectful movie-goer? I swear, more and more people are proud of the fact that they are loud, obnoxious and disruptive at the movie theatres I visit. 20. I just finished that one and found it to be more than a little bit intriguing. I was utterly fascinated with the concepts Neil Gaiman presented in that book. I'm going to get Anansi Boys this week. I also re-read the Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff, Dancing Barefoot by Wil Wheaton and I am still working on Just a Geek by Wil Wheaton. I'm perpetually reading the Tao Te Ching, my Portable Jung and my Parables of Kierkegaard. At any given moment, I'm generally reading no less than two books.
