  1. Chris -- I have a lot of respect for how you're handling this and I'm sure that, if we ever met, I'd really enjoy your company. Doug
  2. I had a similar experience -- without the broken lines -- at the WFFC in 2005. Kathy really earned my loyalty by covering the cost of the reserve repack. Doug
  3. Yeah, it's a pretty sweet deal. Tonight is so gorgeous... I wish I had my boat with me to catch some waves when I get off work in half an hour.
  4. Interesting connection... my dad was one of Van Allen's post-docs in the physics department when I was born at the U of Iowa hospital in June 1958. (Right around the time the radiation belt discoveries were made.) Doug
  5. Agreed. This is exactly the point I was trying to make in an earlier post. Doug
  6. A related question... "Is our perception of ourselves generally accurate?" If others perceive us differently from how we view ourselves, they aren't necessarily the ones who are wrong. There is an incredible amount of self-delusion going around, and I've certainly had my share of it. Doug
  7. What exactly does an "Expeller Operator" do?
  8. You can make out -- just not with each other. Is that better?
  9. Jen & Chad -- Best wishes to you both. But just 'cause it's your b-day, don't think it's OK to be making out in the packing area. See you tomorrow! Doug
  10. broken1 -- The feedback you've gotten is solid. However things turn out, I think you'll find when you get to the other side of this that it has been a powerful catalyst for personal growth. Of course,,, when I'm not getting what I want when I want it, I say "f#ck personal growth." Over time, though, it's something I've often appreciated more than what was lost. Good luck to you. Doug
  11. I've been going through the "hurt, hurt, hurt" part lately due to a relationship train wreck involving cheating. My experience has been more like a gradual letting go -- the night slowly changing to dawn -- as opposed to some kind of sudden release. I think I'll reach the point where I'll realize that I haven't thought about it for a while. Maybe that's what you're talking about. Hearing about others going through similar stuff reminds me that it's just part of being a human being on planet earth. Doug
  12. This is right on. Most of us try to either suppress/ignore fear -- which is futile -- or we passively let it control our thoughts and emotions. The alternative is to recognize fear and take steps to manage it. Some things that help me are visualization, smiling, breathing, and replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Once I'm on the plane, I'm committed to the skydive and stop debating whether or not it's a good idea. Have fun getting back in the air! Doug
  13. I grounded myself today for swimmer's ear. My ear is very clogged and it feels like the side of my head would literally explode as pressure increased during freefall. Not an appealing prospect.
  14. As someone whose job involves business development, I thought the article addressed a legitimate concern and made some very compelling points. Robin did a great job of allocating responsibility for jumper retention to both the USPA (lic. requirements, etc.) and DZ owners. There is a lot that DZ's can do without waiting for the USPA bureaucracy to take action. As others have mentioned, the author's personal history is irrelevant to the validity of the article . Doug
  15. First I've seen it as well. Loved it, both the video and the music. Is the band still active? Doug
  16. As the father of four (ages 17-24), I'm really looking forward to reaching this milestone. However, I don't see it happening soon. I recently told my oldest daughter that she needed to learn to live within her means. She replied "But Dad, you're part of my means!" Doug
  17. Jenn -- From what I've heard, the situation you describe is pretty common. Lottery winners are usually people who don't have experience managing significant amounts of money. After the initial euphoria goes away, the problems of instant wealth can be daunting. Case in point: A friend of mine who is a recovering alcoholic won a $100,000 scratch-off game last September. The first thing I told him was "This will either be a blessing or a curse -- you decide." He relapsed and blew the whole payday on drugs, hookers, and horses. Of course, I'm sure I could handle it the right way. Doug
  18. Cool concept -- gotta pic? Doug
  19. Nightingale -- That is really a beautiful piece of work. Doug
  20. Just did about a month ago... Subaru Forester XT. I'm not extravagant... I've gotten 150,00 miles on my last 2 vehicles, which gives plenty of time to accumulate cash for the next one. Doug
  21. I psycho pack my Pilot 168, but no one who has seen me pack would take any comfort from that. Doug
