Oh boy, I wish I was that eloquent but I'm not an never will be. Your post apitomises exactly what I would of liked have said, when I said earlier that the western world did not understand their culture. Thank you for explaining it. >The likelihood is we are pretty much incapable of fully understanding the mindset of the young men who flew their planes out to meet American fleets more than 60 years ago. Remember those men came from a society which had only 70 years previously been completely isolated from the rest of the world, embracing feudalism under the rule of the Tokugawa. Their society still believed that true warriors faced one another across a pair of katana or nodachi. Their society still had fresh in their minds a warrior code which dated back nearly a millennia. I don't mean some airy fairy old fashioned idea that is remembered back through the mists of time as we westerners see a swordsman – I mean the pilot's actual parents would have seen Bushi and Samurai walking round with swords, living their life as a warrior. Part of the warrior code embraced by that society was an incredibly strict code of honor. One which we simply don't grasp. One which drives them to commit ritualized suicide through seppuku should they be defeated or dishonored. Have none of you heard of the 47 Ronin? Read the story; maybe it will enlighten you as to some of the basic tenets of Bushido. Out of the jaws of defeat it is hardly surprising that this code turned to the concept of the kamikaze; the divine wind; the storm that destroyed the Mongol invasion fleet nearly 700 years earlier. This concept is so far removed from our western values that we don't understand it. We call it insane, stupid or worse. Sanity and stupidity is defined by the society in which we live - we don't live in that society. What is beyond comprehension to our society is simply the ultimate expression of a core belief of another. Sure we don’t understand, we're not a Japanese airman who lived through the Meiji reformation. This understanding goes on today; we just don't understand why hundreds of Japs dress up as CHIPs every weekend or why the biggest Hells Angles chapter is in Tokyo, why manga comics are so common or even tolerated, or why Karaoke is so damned popular. If you want to look for parallels between the Kamikaze and the present situation in the Middle East go ahead... although it is far from the original question which sparked this thread. Whilst the parallels are certainly there, the kamikaze and the suicide bomber probably share far less than many who've contributed to this thread obviously believe.< Post note: My Father was a raider under General Wingate in Burma, He hated the japenese with a blind hatred, When he finally explained to me why he hated them, He said, I admired only two soldiers (enemy) they where the Africa Corps and the Japenese. Last reserve ride I had (wrap cutaway) was on a Lopo.................. so I'm not qualified to answer. I'm in a catch 22, I'd love to know if I could do a stand up with my reserve, but I don't want to find out. I think people after reading this thread will remember it, an when they are unfortunate enough to have a reserve ride they will do a stall test, Hight permitting. Gone fishing

En reguard to the Kamakazi pilots I think some of you need to revise your thoughts. As in essence they where trying to save lives of their fellow soldiers buy taking out military targets. A allied soldier giving his life taking out a machine gun post so others had a better chance is more or less the same thing IE: both made a concience desision to die Nobody is going to ridicule an allied soldier for his desision, So why ridicule the Japanese. I find myself agreeing with you on this one, which personally leaves me in a delema, I have to somehow seperate them from todays suicide bombers the only way I can do that is by thinking that they acted apon military targets in a time of war and under orders from a legitimate superior officer. Hope that makes scence as I do not think they should be lumped togeather with todays suicide bombers. One thing I think people should understand is that they where honrable men with a culture that westeners could not understand Gone fishing

So when England votes NO what will your answer be, They voted no to chastise Blair. Why has Blair moved the voting date forward to this year, Answer, To give the public less time to think and to get them voting before they see other countries voting NO. Maybe the French vote will show other goverments that people are not such the sheep they think they are. Gone fishing

I wish I could jump more in the States with you big guys My neutral is 135 I basically took up freefly as the Europeans are all to skinny. Gone fishing

This Is not directed at you Dave, I just happend to answer to the last posted. I have noted that over the years RW is getting slower, an this is wrong, In my opinion RW should be done at 120 +/- If people have a neutral fall speed of 110 or below they need to speed up, A good base flyers will speed up or slow down the formation according to the fallrate of the fastest person (within reason) ( I'm talking 4-8 way) People with more years in the sport will remember taking a formation down to a low person (again within reason) now it dosen't happen, if your down an dirty you are out in the cold, which according to experience levels can be a hazzard I feel that jumpsuit manafactures are making people lazy by relying too much on the jumpsuit and not enough on technique My opinion. I think the French voted no, out of a fear that the new constitution will pave the way for even more illegal immigrants, an once in Europe will have a status of a third country person Read chapter IV section 1 and 2 article III. 168 Oh......... and untill Turkey can admit to commiting genocide on the Armainians and the murder of political prisioners, They have no place in Europe The only reason the politicians and America want Turkey in Europe is to build air bases when the politicians want something the wants of the public take a back bench. Gone fishing

Lets just hope in 2006 the British see reason and vote NO as well Gone fishing

France has done what the rest of Europe (who have voted) havent dared to do They've seen the light, heard all the lies an voted NO I for one am going to stop taking the piss out of them for a while an give the Frence my vote of confidence. Keep Turkey out of Europe Gone fishing
