  1. I VOTED! Looks like he is ahead by a slim margin now.
  2. This will sound strange but one of the most fascinating books I have read is- “The Making of the Atomic Bomb” by Richard Rhodes Rhodes starts with the Physics knowledge from the 1800’s and follows each step as this knowledge grew into atomic physics. He then flows this into the development of the Manhattan Project and its eventual outcome. Even if you are anti-nuclear weapons like most people, you will find this book to be an incredible combination of Science, Politics, People and History. He also won the Pultzer Prize for it.
  3. Unfortunately, the hate will just go on from one thing or person to another. Wow, that’s a depressing statement from someone like me. But that was my initial reaction so I will leave it as it is.
  4. From that photo, it seems you will fit right in with the coffee house crowd!
  5. When I was in High School in SW Missouri in the early 1970’s it was normal during hunting season for students and teachers to park their pick-up trucks at school with guns in their rifle racks. Students and teachers would meet and hunt together before and after school. My how times have changed. Who put these PC idiots in charge anyway?
  6. "Flash' is an old French skydiving term for tracking. I know a few other French words from my summer jumping over there in 1983 but they have nothing to do with skydiving!
  7. It’s a sad day. Charlie was a great guy. I met him many years a go when we hit it off and finished his AFF training at Z-hill. Under that tough Boston persona was a man who had a heart of gold. He would give you the shirt off his back and not think twice about it. He will be missed by many. My thoughts are with you Sally. Jack
  8. Just don't quit quiting! I have been smoke free for three weeks now. I'm using the gum. Seems to work well for me. For the most part I have been staying away from places where people smoke. Last weekend was my big test. I was in Vegas for three days and didn't give in while I was drinking in the casino with all the smokers. Don't buy any more smokes. Ask your Dr. if you can use the gum at the same time. It really takes the edge off for me. Good Luck!
  9. Well, I have the unit and am using it now. Cost is $59 per month and I had to pay a one time fee of about $50 to get set up with them. There is no contract so I can cancel at any time. It is sure faster than dial up but slower than the broadband (radio antenna on the roof) system I did have. I have had some problems getting a good signal inside my house but it seems to work fine outside on my deck. My wife and I had been talking about getting a cell phone repeater/amp for a while due to weak signal out where we live so we went ahead and ordered one. It should be here in a few days. Hopefully this will clear up the signal problem we have in the house. On the down side, we have to take turns using it on our laptops since it is only one unit. Performance is affected by bad cell phone coverage. On the upside it seems to be a good interem step while we pump our local phone company for DSL service out here or get a satellite system. Also, we can take it with us on trips this summer and have internet service if there is a good phone signal. We could also use it in the car and maybe get traffic reports before we go through a big city. So all in all, I'm happy with it for now but it is not what I want for the long term. Thanks for the tip Jay!
  10. Well, I ordered the system from Millenicon and I should have it next week. I'll let you know how it works once I've had it a few days. The thing I like about it is that I can take it anywhere I go.
  11. Thanks for the tips guys! I love living out in the boonies, except for no cable or phone company DSL service.
  12. Do any of you have any recommendations for the service provider you use? Is it better to pay more for the faster packages? Any advice would be appreciated. I’m in a situation where my local broadband provider (radio receiver/transmitter on the roof type) is stopping service in my area. I live in the country and we have no cable and no DSL out here. So basically Satellite is my only option now. Thanks in advance!
  13. Years ago I read a book about his jump. It stated that he approached, but did not exceed, the speed of sound. Then about ten years ago I see Joe on some Discovery Channel show saying that he did. I saw him a few months ago at an aviation conference here in Michigan and asked him nicely about it. I basically told him that everything I read that was written right after the jump said he did not go supersonic yet I have heard him for the last ten plus years saying he did. He gave me a very evasive answer about aeronautical engineers and mis-calculations but that he "thought he did". My guess is that he pushed the truth one time on camera and has had to live with it ever since to save face. Don't get me wrong. I think what he did was amazing and I really respect him for it. And he has done some other great things in aviation. He deserves all the credit and awards he gets. Maybe I'm too much into being truthful about my and other peoples claims of achievement.
  14. The site is BS. I put in my address several times and each time it came out completely different. Maybe they are mining addresses?
  15. No.......... But I bet I'm about to find out!
  16. In the second photo there is what looks to be an air scoop on the top of the aircraft behind the cockpit. That's just not right for an F-117. The rest looks about right so I don't know what to think. BTW, did you guys know that the USAF is in the process of retiring all the F-117's? I'm serious.
  17. I don't know the who but I think the plane is a prop for a movie. I think the name was Stealth.
  18. Quote Anyway heres to Lew Sanborn D-1, one tough old bird. These images were taken from my 1982 Parachutist and a write up about the first issued 30 year membership in USPA awarded to Lew. You do the math, and the man is still jumping, pretty damn cool in my book, so hat's off to Lew and those of you in his class. Quote Since noboby responded to my hint to who one of the people was in the 14 Plane, I'll give the answer. It was of course- Lew Sanborn! Lew was doing CREW with us at Z-hills in the early 1980's and I was honored to be on the same 8 man team with him at the First World Cup of CRW. We won the silver.
  19. I checked the date and I have it correct. That photo is on my wall. I have most of the other names but I will leave it up to other people. But I will give on hint. One of the people in the Worlds First 14 Plane has already had his name come up in this thread.
  20. #4 is members of The Plane ol Folk and The Other People building the Worlds First 14 Plane at Z-hills on November 2, 1980. The good looking guy on top is me!
  21. Well I just ran into this in the last few days. Last week I interviewed for a job as a pilot for a private jet owner, flying him and his family around. His chief pilot interviewed me first and I told him about it because I didn't want to hide anything. Based on my resume and our interview he took me in to meet and interview with the owner the next day. My resume shows that I started flying in 1995 so the owner asked me what I did before that. Well..... I couldn't/wouldn't lie and I told him that I worked full time as a skydiver for 20 years. When we were finished I was asked to step out of the office and the owner and chief pilot had a little discussion about me. Afterwards the chief pilot said the owner expressed concern that I was a risk taker. The chief pilot liked me and my flying background and went to bat for me. The result was that I was called in to a meeting with the owner today and he offered me the job! I am so jazzed!!!!!!!!!! So in my case it could have been a show stopper, but I was honest and my flying background and the recommendation from the chief pilot overcame the owners concerns. So I would say that if they ask specifically about skydiving, tell the truth.
  22. Why? Do you think shes hotter than the others? You must be getting lonley up there in Ancorage. I'll have to stop by again and buy you another beer!
  23. Was she on the island too? I'd put her in but Edit dosn't give me the ability to add another option. Sorry.
