  1. Today's the day! The Brazil - Netherlands game should be a humdinger. Spare a thought for Ghana too.

  3. Agreed. Too much like a lottery. I have no clever solution though. Perhaps reduce the number of players and play 'Golden Goal'? Four South American teams in the last eight!
  4. I think that is what made this win so good. Klose has been around a bit and he showed his experience, but the youngters stole the show. Good stuff. Hopefully now FIFA will incorporate technology - at least on the goal line.
  5. Fair enough. To each his own - I don't enjoy any kind of motor racing. I am still very proud of the show we are putting on. No one gave us a chance, and we are delivering.
  6. Here in the states we do that every day...we call it going to work back home from the World Cup
  7. . I hope you watched the England Germany game. Only (6) 5 goals scored, but if you still think it was boring, perhaps basket ball where 200 goals per game is the norm is your best bet. Germany played with no 'superstars', but they were clinical and inventive. Good win.
  8. Agreed. The USA have consistantly played attractive and exciting soccer - one of the reasons for their injury time goal the other night. While I am happy for Ghana (being fellow Africans an'all), I am sorry to see the Americans go.
  9. Therein lies the beauty of soccer. It is a game of patience, strategy, subtelty, team work and individual flair, with some acting thrown in. Add to that the sub-plots, like the major rivalries. Do you yourself one more favour and watch the England - Germany game today. It promises to be the game of the tournament so far.
  10. Bye_Bye_Italy.jpg (88.4 KB) is not a video Oy vey. Nick referred to a compilation of vids, so I didn't even bother to go click anything. Won't it be far more interesting to talk about Pres Clinton in South Africa. I, for one, think that he is by far the most charismatic of recent US presidents, and it is cool to have him here, enjoying the our World Cup.
  11. Hey there. How are you doing? I can't watch videos at work.
  12. Met eish, ja.... met eish.
  13. It is very tough and has resulted in loads of controversy in the past. Bear in mind though that more often than not it is one of the two assistant refs (formerly known as linesmen) rather than the on-field ref that makes the offside call. It is far easier to judge from the side than from on-field.
  14. Actually, only South Africans have bought more seat tickets than Americans at the WC this year. Pres Clinton was at the game too. It was very funny to watch his reactions - he is was clearly not a soccer fan. I believe he has now changed his itenary to watch USA's first knock-out game too. Very cool.
  15. What? Yes, even my son-in-law, a big time soccer guy around here, said that the defense can dog it a bit and make it look like they couldn't keep up, when in reality they just preferred to have offside called. Seems like he also doesn't understand the rule. In soccer, on/offside is determined at the instant the player kicking the ball strikes it. An attacker must have at least two defenders between him and the goal at the point that the ball is struck. Thereafter the attacker can go where he wants. The defenders don't have to 'keep up' with anyone, because on/offside was already determined when the ball was struck.
  16. Good stuff. Alas, too little too late.
  17. As Remster said, there is no official video review in soccer. Any replays, slo-mos etc are for the benefit of the viewers and commentators. Pity, really. Most other major sporting codes use technology as far as is possible, especially with the vast amounts of money at stake these days. Anyways, a draw for England and Algeria too. The last games in this group are going to be fascinating.
  18. I'm no expert but I think the Americans 'wuz robbed'. Alas, the score card has no comments column, eh? Still wide open group. Let's see what the Poms can do.
  19. USA just pulled one back! This World Cup is certainly full of surprises! Good stuff all round.
  20. Eish, if you are so desperate for attention, go and start a thread about yourself in Bonfire. Oh, wait.....
