  1. Max Cohn Definitely the best coach i jumped with so far. I had a couple of coach jumps, but none were as effective as his. Even though the debrief was held for all jumps during the day with all coached people (positive-you also learn from others as well, negative- oh i'm sooo embarassed, but hey, we've all been there), but that was because the coaching was FREE (your and his slot only, that is), and thus he was doing every load... I preferred his style of doing the jump because of his no-stress approach; Get out in a position you know and are comfortable in, then do what you want to learn (in my case HD). Breathe, relax, start your drill. Get unstable/loose eye contact/stressed -> back to comfortable, relax, try again. Not thelike: alright, let's do a linked HD exit and see whether you remain stable or what needs to be corrected. His video is amazing, as you get to see all the signals he gives you as well (check out his vid of our jump here, CoachJumpWeb.avi (Sorry, can't link to the file directly...) He's a great guy as well, of course! The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...
  2. Check out this german website, Freeflyshop.de. Topmost entry on the left, "Skydiver In", second item. Smoke cartridges are 33 Euros, i don't know if he ships em to Lithuania, but he might be able to give you the address of the manufacturer. Just drop him a mail, he's a buddy of mine. 3. I guess if it would've been the whole rig it wouldn't have been floating around too long. While the reserve may float for a while, it will eventually get soaked too and then the weight would be enough to sink the whole thing. Speculated as well, of course. 4. Even though i fully support your claim for privacy, (and i deleted the image as i received it as it was really disgusting), i cannot recall whether you could actually identify the person. If you cannot identify the person, you don't have to worry about privacy (and i don't mean really thin black bars over the eyes here, i mean really unidentifyable). And it for sure was not one of the documentary pictures taken by hospital staff. It was like 6 feet away from the table. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 5. I was under the impression the cycle in Germany was turned up because you can only jump like half the year in Germany, and if you'd go somewhere else during Winter you'd have to have a repack according to local regulations anyway. The idea was mostly to get your repack in spring just before the season starts, and jump it all through the season, even if it may be a month longer than 6... If riggers in the US would up their prices for when the cycle bcame longer, they are not paid for their work anymore. They may earn less, but they have less work too. I don't think that getting a repack every 200 jumps is a bad idea at all. People are recommended to change their linesets every 500 jumps, and do they not? I'd assume that there are very few jumpers that actually do 200 jumps in two month (though i sure wish i would). I'd further assume that jumpers who do wouldn't have to mind due to a backup rig and the use of packers anyway. The ill spot of the regulation is to when does your standard, John Does' reserve take on a setting from storing/usage conditions that will delay the opening compared to a fresh ("in-cycle") packjob. This will be impossible to fixate for all the different jump surroundings out there. Thus, a jump number in combination with a timeframe would be a good thing IMO. Like the Cypres batteries, 4 years or 500 jumps (NO, i don't mean that as a repack cycle...). So what about 1 year or 200/250 jumps? (1/4 of the Cypres cycle=1 yr or 125 j?) 6. Hi there, i did a DVD for the first belgian freefly festival "Headdown over Spa" last year, got into all the fancy pancy stuff with stand-in videos instead of screenshots for scene selection etc... I was working with DVD Maestro, a program that is no longer commercially available on the PC thanks to Apple buying the company. Anyway, there are ways to get it off the net. I found Doom9.org to be an awesome resource for all encoding/authoring related questions. Go to the GUIDES-> DVD/miniDVD-> DVD authoring section and you will get pretty much all the info you need. It covers a wide range of encoders and authoring programs, not all, but the basic principles apply to all. HTH! Happy authoring! PS: I fuond the biggest fuzz was to get the audio DVD-compliant... 7. Just pull right.... (Don't you learn assembling and disassembling the three-ring when you're in the hanging harness as a student? It's not like it's rocket science, no offense.) In Germany as a licensed skydiver you are even allowed to do your own reserve repack (Don't know anyone who does, though). From my experience you usually don't find packers (as opposed to riggers) at german DZs, so packing is part of every AFF course. Basic gear functionality is part of the licensing exam, IIRC. Of course, not everything sticks and becomes knowledge, but i have found myself looking at how people who had other licences (other issuing associations) packed their stuff and being seriously scared. I also found that the DZ where i did my AFF did a superior job as compared to almost all DZs i've been to since. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 8. So my 120 goes just as slow as the student 230??? This is incorrect. The smaller canopy is loaded higher and will therefor be faster (foward speed). If you meant it has the same "slow foward speed" at the end of the flare, well, maybe, depending on the flare. What is meant by brake power is somewhat unclear to me, but as the smaller canopy has shorter lines, it will also be more responsive due to the shorter leverage. Numberswise the 148 will put you to a 1.001 WL, compared to the 0.89 on the 168 from your profile, which should be alright for your jump numbers. BUT: I don't hold any instructor/coach/whatever ratings, so Check with your instructors/experienced people to see what they have to say to your landings. 10. You can pack a PC on a TO so it will deploy if the bridle is pulled. So you can with a TO as well. With a freefly pud like on my Wings, which is kinda the same thing as the PO handle setup, you eliminate the chance for a premmy just as well. So IMO toanswer whether PO or TO is better for freeflying, it doesn't make a difference. If you get a TO, make sure you get a secure handle (aka freefly pud). My personal preference (only like 10-20 jumps on PO) is throwout. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 13. My thought as well, but in a case like that a clicky on the profile may help. I take it correctly that Namibia is still a fairly scarcely populated country? 14. It was a suggestion. How long have they been around? Long enough to become standard? Not everything becomes standard quickly. I can't see any disadvantages of a pud compared to a hackey, except for its not bouncing around and sticking out... (Nope, i don't say a hackey is NOT GOOD!) Chill! 15. Luetzellinden is a great place, very experienced people, i did my AFF there. But since the DZO did not manage to charter a turbine like he used to and bought a 206 instead, as well as me moving away i didn't get there a lot in the last 3 years. Check out my review. 17. How old is your manual? A low flyby during a flight from one DZ to another led to a fatality in germany two years ago (it was part of a chain of mishaps on that jump). After this event, this section was introduced to the manuals AND a poster was sent to all the DZs i know. The Cypres will set itself to "jumprun" once air pressure drops significantly over a short period of time (short period=ground measuring cycles). Once in jumprun mode, it will measure constantly until the activation altitude is reached with a speed lower than 35m/s. Then, Cypres will go back to standard ground measuring cycles. Thus, if you do a low pass which goes lower than the set activation altitude, your cypres may assume your jump to be over fine. It will then start over remeasuring in 30 second cycles (which, if im not mistaken, is the ground measurement cycle). Once your plane starts pulling up again, cypres will reset the current altitude your plane is at as "Zero", once the new drop in air pressure is detected. If this happens while being lower than your landing site, your cypres would fire too low. if it happens above, it may fire too high (but not too high, as you still had to get to its preset activation altitude in the first place). 20. 60ish... Spent ~30 jumps before that downsizing (to the 150 my instructor/DZO recommended for me), then got a good deal. Main reason was that the DZ charged rental on a per-jump basis, and rental was about 1/4 of a ticket, and that there was only a 190 as smallest rental and too many students. Overall four student rigs and sometimes 6 students... I bought used gear though, since i thought it wouldn't hurt as much to do "the early years" on a used rig. Last year at 330ish jumps, i got myself my custom Wings, because i know i will jump that for . It can take any canopy that i could think of downsizing to ever, but there will be no need for it as i can see of now. It was not as expensive as a Mirage, and saving that money made for a number of jumps... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 21. Considering he's asking about taking grips i assumed he's doing 2ways anyway already. With this in mind, it makes more sense to advise on control/orientation drills rather than have him go ahead and try grips without the basics solidified. 22. Now that does not necessarily make sense. Folding the stabilizers from D to brake over the brake lines should be enough. Dont forget that there is a line group attached along each span, so folding the B-C back may throw them off their "normal" orientation. As the whole thing should stay closed anyway, that doesn't matter that much, but why do it? The reason there is a slight chance of a lineover in the way the original photo was taken is that a brake line could slip to the left or right in front of the nose. The trick is not to stack as much canopy over the break lines as possible, the trick is to keep them in place when pulling up the tail, closing the cocoon, and, most importandly, while laying the cocoon on the floor, as this is where the lines are being moved most. Just prevent them from slipping in front by folding the D->Brake stabs over them and you're fine. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 23. Now what's that supposed to mean? That Flatpack is the "proper" way to pack a ram air canopy? Sorry, but Pro pack (Proper Ram Air Orientation, if i'm not mistaken) is simply folding the canopy in the bag in the same order reversed that it comes out. I was taught propacking during my AFF course and it was explained very well. I have propacked ever since and it makes more sense to me personally than flatpack does. BUT: If i figure it right (and i have never packed Flatpack yet), the only real difference once the canopy is in the dbag is the way the canopy is folded to fit in there. Flatpack puts it folded sideways (a stabilizer form the bottom and top of the cocoon), PRO-pack Front to back (trailing edge forms the outer skin of the cocoon). No big difference, the line groups stay together, and once out of the dbag and un-S-folded (ideally thinking, of course it's already filling up anway), the canopy looks the same either way. I've seen a packing technique that i haven't tried yet but which looked really fast (well, it was a GK who packed it...), clean and neat. It is generally referred to as PRO-Stack (again, if i'm not mistaken) and is also used by some riggers for packing reserves and by people packing their BASE Rigs. In the latter cases clamps are used to keep things in place, but you can do without and pretty fast as well. As long as the canopy sits in the bag in a way so that it gets out in the proper orientation without unnecessary friction of lines against the canopy, canopy tissue on tissue or lines on lines, all is well. Which packing method is used to achieve that does not matter except for personal preference and maybe packing space availability. As for the argument that if packing in the sun is good enough for the GKs, so it should be fine for "the rest", damn, i sure as hell don't get a new rig/canopy as fast as they do... 24. Find someone that has the same level like you and do training jumps together. One jump he stays put as the base. Like this you can stick to a heading and train your eye contact, and corking is not a danger unless you loose eye contact. On the next jump, you are the base and he gets to do his drill. Start with easy stuff, 360 on all axises, staying on heading, going fowrd and backward. That way, you can give each other tips and do have a reference. This advice was just given to me and others this weekend by Max Cohn. He was coaching the whole weekend for just his slot. Learned a lot and had lots of fun.
