One argument that has been touched on but never brought to the foreground is the fact that current jumpers have statistically as many injuries/fatalities as less current jumpers. There is no way to make this a completely safe sport unless everyone quits jumping. It is unnatural to get out of an airplane 13000 feet in the air, and it is just as unnatural to do it willingly. Injuries, Fatalities and Incidents will happen, no matter the currency or not. And to be completely honest, I am not the most current of jumpers (since it has been -10 degrees and snowing for the last few days), but it is some of the hot-shot current "experienced" jumpers that scare me...the ones with the "sky-God" attitude that go head down 20 feet from a deploying tandem ... experienced, current, and just plain stupid. My feeling is that Big Government wants something else to patrol... they already watch the roads, the air, the sea, the internet, food, medicines, beverages, tobacco products, drugs, weapons, alcohol, photography, email, tv programming, radio programming, air pollution, noise pollution, body piercing, tattooing, over seas affairs. i think a defination needs to be made. what exactly is "a few times a year..."? in my neck of the woods, a few times a year is 10-less. in a 24/7/365 jump climate, a few times a year could mean 25-less jumps. My personal opinion is this: I have limited funds. I pack so I can jump. When I make it to the DZ, I jump on first load and pack the rest of the day. I average between 35-60 jumps per year. I jump a Stilletto 135, and I weigh 200 prior to gear. I am confident in my actions that I can jump that little and still be safe... For currency, I generally do a clear and pull from 5k (and maybe another one, depending on how I do). My reserve procedures are tackled before I get into the plane. It is a lot like riding a bike... once you learn, you know the basics... how to control, how to stop, how to dump. Once you are back in the saddle, things begin to come back... but I would caution those that want to execute a 180 hook without being current... Just my ramblings, feel free to criticize... the game is bad. the controlability sucks and the grafix look like they belong in the 90's. it is all hybrid jumping (if you can get the combos off) which isnt too bad, but they dont show the exit, the break off or the deployment. there is no canopy ride either... pilotwings for N64 had a 'secret' level that was rw jumping with deployment and landing that was fun, and so far, the best skydiving level i have ever played...
