Work is so boring Need to jump from an airplane Or helicopter! I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

I don't care who it is: big radio personality or not, it is unconstitutional. That is what I am telling my senator, in hopes that he will speak for me. I highly doubt it, but at least I am acting on my beliefs and not sitting idly by waiting for the next person to fight my fight for me. No law should infringe upon our freedoms, and the 1st Ammendment states that clearly. It may have been a law or a regulation for a long time, but it was not a hot topic until now, when it is enforced. It is the same reason that I wrote him regarding Patriot Act II being passed and infringing on my right to privacy. If we don't stand up for ourselves, nobody will ever know that we are upset. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Hey Rev: I am screaming "Censorship" with the Stern thing and I could have cared less whether the Jackson Nip thing happened. It didn't change my life where this has the potential to be HUGE, that is why I am ranting about it and mailing my senator about my displeasure. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

I would be. As a citizen of the United States of America, it is my CIVIC DUTY to stand up for the Bill of Rights and demand that the government respect the rights it gave to us when this wonderful country was created. It is called being an American and trying (even if feebly) to keep government working FOR the people, not against them. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Agreed. I feel that my responsibility is to defend the ammendment, even if it means siding with someone I really don't care about in the first place (Stern). Howard didn't say, 'hey, take me off the air.' The company under the supervision of the FCC made that choice, and THAT is censorship. If it was because of a scheduled ending, if Howard's contract was up or something, we wouldn't be having this discussion. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

That is a direct quote from the First Ammendment to the Constitution of The United States. It is all three, because all three are wrapped into the same ammendment. If this holds and Stern is taken off the airwaves, it will open a whole can of worms. People will be yanked off the air left and right because censors will use Stern's case as the basis and therefore violate the ENTIRE first ammendment, just as the Patriot Act violated our ENTIRE 4th ammendment. So it isn't a reach to make the assumption that our First Ammendment was violated... EVERYONE's first ammendment, not just Stern's. With the implications of the Bill of Rights, the first ammendment also gives us the right to listen to whomever we want to listen to, including Stern if we so choose. Hence, our rights were impeded upon. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Dude, read the first few pages, man. FCC is government (or did you miss that incarnation?). FCC laid the restrictions and regulations and forced CCC to do something... fire Stern. It is not a large leap there and if you dig, you will find the same thing. My facts are in line. I didn't say the Patriot Act pulled Stern from the air. The Patriot Act limited our freedoms which are further hindered by the action of the government to pull Stern off the air. The Patriot Act took this ammendment away from us, limiting our freedoms. Taking Stern off the waves violates "the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble." The more the government does against its people, the more freedoms are taken away from us. You see this move as long overdue, I see it as a violation of my rights and a standard to which further censorship will be based. That seems to be the difference in this thread: those that agree with the action, tend to despise Stern and what he is and stands for. The people that are against the decision to pull him off the air, generally see it as an infringment on the Bill of Rights. What is more important, one man or everyone's freedoms? I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Maybe I should have been more definitive... The government didn't ban the book, the school board did. My guess is you will also find To Kill A Mockingbird on the web somewhere, but it is also on the banned book list because it is racial... maybe you can do a search for Stern too: bet you will find something on the web. Just because you can link to it doesn't mean the government isn't monitoring it. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

This country is diverse, as you said, which means diverse interests, likes and dislikes. Not everyone is a skydiver, not everyone rides motorcycles, and not everyone thinks Stern should have been yanked. It is a country that was founded and thrived on diversity. FCC, CCC and a-holes pushing a platform get to limit that diversity, and that is wrong... not only wrong, but AGAINST THE CONSTITUTION. Remember the statement "No One should be able to infringe on my pursuit of liberty...?" Well, what is liberty if it is not defining MYSELF... I don't want the FCC, CCC, Stern, Mancow, Rush, Ann or any other bum-f*ck with an opinion defining me; and taking Stern off the radio, whether good or bad, defines people. As sad as it may be, Stern makes people think for themselves (which we can currently still do), and thinking leads to ideas, which can lead to molding your personality, which is DIRECTLY liked to liberty. THAT is why it is a bad thing, THAT is what the government it doing... and if you want a clearer picture, pick up Brave New World... oh, wait, that is a banned book now. edited: got ahead of myself in wording... I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

2 things Rev: 1) What do you think caused these "newly revised programming standards"? What was wrong with the old standards? Do you thing CCC would change their own standards if not prodded to do so? THEY WERE MAKING MONEY! WHY CHANGE IT? 2) Last time I heard, Mr. Powell did not work for CCC... he worked for *cough* the GOVERNMENT. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

I did, I do, and I will, in every election. It has nothing to do with elected officials listening or not listening to their constituents... it is about their blatend abuse of power and wanton neglegence of the Constitution and out legal rights as Americans. You would be crazy if you thought that the Senators, Representatives, Governors or Mayors of my state care that pollution is seeping into the soil, causing insect infestations, killing off the corn crop, which increases ethanol prices which in turn affect gasoine prices which hurts the economy which determines the outcome of the next election in 4 years. They are too worried about Janet Jackson's boob and the Howard Fucking Stern show. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Slappie is right... FCC warned CCC to calm him or lose him. CCC like him, he brought in money all the time with his E! shows, movies, contravercies, etc. The heat was on and they had to act... that is the story that you won't hear until CCC tries to get Stern back. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

It goes deeper than a CCC monopoly of media. It is the government infringing on my right to use that media. What if the government decided to kill off all the rock and roll... oldy rock, new rock, hard rock, etc... then where would you be? I would have NOTHING left to listen to without subscribing to a free radio or buying cd's. It is more than CCC owning most of the radio stations and spewing their dumbass politics on me... it is the government's big fucking hand that controls everything and THAT IS THE PROBLEM. It is like the dumbass that sues Big Tobacco after getting cancer from smoking: you know what you are going to get when you start. Turn him off and let me listen to Stern if I want to. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

You and I feel the same way, but disagree on how it should be handled. We both agree that we don't like Stern, but the difference is how it was done. Sorry, man, but I don't need to have the government babysit me. I have two hands, I can change the friggin channel on the radio myself. I don't need someone turning it off for me. It is my RIGHT to listen to the radio, it is my RIGHT to decide what to listen to. Stern, and many like him, are already under heavy scrutiny from FCC for words, content and the like, but to censor him to the point of taking him off the radio is absurd. My freedom of choice is what sets me apart from Korea, Vietnam, China and any other dictatorship in the world. I have the freedom to decide what to do, not have someone tell me what to do. If I wanted that, I would move out of this wonderful country. If this is true, then why is it such a big deal? He is just a little man, right? Be a bigger one and turn him off... don't rely on the government to turn him off for you. The government should be making decisions to better the lives of the citizens... and turning off Stern, Mancow, Rush or any other 'shock jock' is a waste of time and abuse of power. While thinking that, you forget that NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO INFRINGE ON MY FREEDOM OF SPEACH OR FREEDOM OF CHOICE. Stern is not infringing on my right to liberty or happiness, nor is he infringing on yours. Is he literally outside your window right now? NO. He is on the radio, on one of a hundred stations, and you have the right to turn the channel. I agree, he is not family friendly, so the solution should have been what it has been for the last 10 years... don't listen to him. The line of thinking that says if someone is offensive, we need to shut him up is the same that was prominent in the 40's. And I say to people that agree with the government's action (because Clear Channel acted on FCC reccomendations) to shut Stern down: WAKE UP. The government is slowly taking away your freedoms and you are letting them. We will have to agree to disagree because this will get really heated. I am against big government. I am against the government telling me what I can listen to, watch on TV, see on the street corners, buy in the grocery store or say. If you like it, by all means, enjoy these great times we are in. But when the government goes through YOUR house for no reason and without a warrant because of a SUSPICION, just think about where it started.... I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

I hate to inform you, but we are in the middle of a witch hunt again... have you been to the airport, courthouse or concert venues lately? Are you sure you are not a terrorist? Leave me alone, leave my underwear alone and let me get on the damn plane! I pay my taxes to the government and I still have to endure this kind of crap! The government should NOT be allowed to simply fire someone because what they say is offensive. It isn't offensive to me; but the government's regulation of Stern is! I may not like Stern, but he HAS THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEACH, or do we not have constitutional rights anymore??? Oh, I almost forgot, that STUPID PATRIOT ACT took them all away from me! It is not about Stern, Mancow or Rush. It is about my freedom and the government taking it away from me while raping me in the pocketbook. I love this country, but I HATE what it is doing to me. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire
