  1. A good flat tracking position gives a lot more speed, but descent rate is lower. If you watch the on-level video of the 400-way break off, those departing in a track fell slower than the center formation. This tended to be the case, even when we did a steeper track, as requested by later waves so that they could see us ahead of them (and not above).
  2. Please don't sit by me.
  3. wrong - between nearly identical canopies that would not impact "how floaty" they were. It would only impact the forward speed relative to the ground. the OP was obviously jumping completely different canopies, and as such they have different flight characteristics. They may also use different measuring methods which could make them more like 30sq ft apart :) Actually, wind would exactly explain the difference in perception of a neophyte, as he described. The "floaty" canopy with the "longer" glide ratio could be the one with no wind. Similar (same) canopy with 6 mph head wind would be easier to land and would seem not to have that much glide ratio. Not saying that is the case here, since we don't have the information, but it could be. Another factor, assuming that these are not zero-P canopies, could be that one has a lot more jumps on it than the other, and is more porous / ragged-out.
  4. That is certainly true. However, the point NWFlyer makes regarding quick lineup/exit resulting in fewer stalls, given imperfect piloting, should also be used, to further reduce such incidents. The particular pilot and aircraft should be taken into account when planning the line up. Many jump pilots have definite ideas on how many floaters is acceptable to them, so that should be understood ahead of time.
  5. In the moo'd for a road trip
  6. Personally, I don't view that as an especially large amount of cash. More than I would carry without some reason, but not exactly a huge amount -- only a couple of days' pay for lots of people.
  7. If someone wanted to talk to me about (golf, NASCAR, pro sports, their religion -- you pick), I would tolerate it for a short time, then consider them a bore.
  8. My jump wingloading is 1.68, but my hump wingloading is 1.27
  9. Because it is none of their business.
  10. Bad idea. If you want to get them of the road, tax them off. Don't buy them off.
  11. It's the name I've always known her by, but I barely knew her a decade+ ago, jumping at Monterey.
  12. Write them down, and take them with you next time.
  13. Canna guy get a drink around here?
  14. Corn sticks, made in the same cast iron piece that my great grandmother used nearly 100 years ago.
  15. He's married. This statement makes her sound like a skank.
  16. Do you wear weights to do 4/8 way? If so (and maybe anyway), you should get a tight fit. If you want to wear it in cold weather, just measure over the whatever you would be wearing (I gave them measurements with and without weights), but it will not be so tight when wearing less. For a big way, you can always wear a t-shirt over it, if you need to fall a bit slower. Multiple suits for different types of dives is the best answer.

  18. You left off the choice: "the jumper should pay for the new tail for the 99"
  19. There is a bit of technique to get used to. I now have no problem, even with gloves.
  20. My vaccum is about 30 years old. It doesn't get used much, and still works -- I hire that activity out. BTW, I haven't seen/used a "bagless" one that I like. They cost more (expensive filter to be routinely replaced), and I'd rather just toss a $1.30 paper bag than empty out something.
