  1. You should feel like buying a case of beer, and paying for any damage caused.
  2. I was having a bit of a nose bleed a few years back at the DZ. I ripped strips of Kleenex(tm), rolled them up, and used them as nasal tampons. Just the right amount, and they work well. Too big and they won't go. Too small, and they won't stay in. A little too small, combined with an open face hat/helmet, and they may blow right through into the back of your throat during free-fall, as happened to me.
  3. They do the same thing that you would be doing, if you were that flexible.
  4. I have one, as does my wife. How does that work? Can I "be there" to nag her while she's driving? Or will she blame me for bad routing?
  5. Used to be there was no A. My A number is lower than my C. I didn't bother with B, since you couldn't do any more with that (such as demo jumps which required a C) than you could with an A. I only bothered to get a D when it was required in order to get a permit to jump El Capitan.
  6. I second the opinion to find a local DZ. There, you can meet jumpers from whom you can continue to learn, and find other jumpers with whom to skydive. OTOH, maybe you do it as a road trip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J6UgV_ZzJQ&feature=related
  7. Some students will get in the way, no matter what the TM does. I see TMs lift the passenger legs out of the way with their own and do the ass-slide landing, rather than risk tumbling a stand-up attempt.
  8. If being "left alone" when the student leaves the plane prematurely is that big of an issue, not enough time was spent on the ground training. On your tandem shoulder example, that is injury related, and injured jumpers shouldn't be taking passengers/students if the injury could interfere with doing the job.
  9. Holy shit. I totally just lost it because my kitty is spread out across my lap as I read that. Stop playing with your food.
  10. Nice site, Jan, but you are missing some DZ's. In Georgia, for example, you are missing ASC. Or should that be in Indiana?
  11. Yum, grilled dog. This guy was pretty large, and was taken with a 255/65/R17 from a sitting position, on my way back from skiing. Because of the large size, I thought it was something else until I looked it up. The ones which I've seen near my house are much smaller, I'd say maybe 20 pounds or so.
  12. Leaking how much? Just keep adding fluid, if it isn't a ridiculous amount, and the vehicle will be dying soon anyway. If it is the engine oil leaking (can you tell?), it might be worth cleaning or replacing the PCV valve, or whatever the Cirrus has along that line. If the PCV gets clogged, it allows crankcase pressure to build up, and will cause seals to leak. Replacing it will not totally fix the seals, but can reduce leakage to a small amount. A less environmental fix along the same line would be a vented oil filler cap. Some of the oils specific for higher-mileage cars might help a bit with the seal conditioning. I personally wouldn't be adding any of the snake-oil leak fixers, even as a "hail Mary" fix.
  13. Well, at least we have a tunnel now. I haven't made a home jump since October.
  14. Ray was pretty early doing tandems, the first I ever saw. He used to do them at Lodi, using his own gear. IIRC, Bill would just charge him for the two slots, and Ray would charge the tandem something like $70. As the tandems got to be more than the odd passenger or two, Bill decided to start doing them himself (or at least with his own people), so Ray was cut out. That, and a whole bunch of other stuff, made Ray and Dan interested in opening their own DZ.
  15. These won't break (well, maybe break your toe if you drop it). http://www.amazon.com/Lodge-Pro-Logic-Pizza-Pan/dp/B0000E2V3X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1263433054&sr=8-1
  16. $200 isn't that much, but there are just SO many people that need to be hit, that it really adds up.
  17. At this time this was news, I only heard about the need to fly non-stop, nothing else. However, I'm still pissed about this. She could make a fuel stop at some base partway across the U.S. and continue to use much cheaper aircraft.
  18. Like lots of other stuff in construction, or car repair, the investigation time to understand how to do the task may be a lot more than the time to do it. If you see yourself doing it again, or just love doing stuff for yourself, that invested learning time may be worthwhile. If not, maybe find something else that needs doing to save money on, with more labor content and less learning time content.
  19. Ya probably need to be mooning, to give it realism.
  20. It does depend upon what state you are licensed in. Jerry Baumchen, PE A very small percentage of professional engineers have any need to be Professional Engineers, at least for those of us who work in electronics. Maybe for government related jobs.
