The third part of the trilogy with Koyanaquatsi (actually Koyaanisqatsi) and Powaquatsi is Naqoyqatsi The titles mean: Life Out of Balance, Life in Transformation, and Life as War. They are basically musical montages, but very haunting. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Great movie, I dig it, as well as Serendipity. Vanilla, if you dont mind my asking...feel free to say you do, what disgusted you? -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

I agree very much /not trying to hijack/ I thought that was the magic of the film. I thought a lot of people could relate to Lester. He felt he was in a position created mostly out of good intentions and good efforts, yet was very unhappy with the results. It was when he finally saw that he did not have to change it even, simply choose not to let it control, he finally started to truly experience life. An interesting parallel from a Nelson Demille novel character "The only truly safe boat is a boat in the harbor. But that is not what boats were made for." His character left me feeling that is only after you choose to acknowledge the full spectrum of inputs, that you can really feel you chose anything at all. Much like CS Lewis postulated that without pain it would be impossible to recognize joy. Perhaps this is all very subjective, and personal to my life this year But I very much enjoyed that premise....and have been kinda of searching for a tattoo with that larger message. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Interesting...I have a buddy like that who feels any movie that moves him is impressive. I agree, but some days I don't feel like being moved. It is intriguing that you felt disgusted with Lester Burnham (spacey). My overwhelming feeling at the end of the film was that he was the only character in the movie that lived. He died, but none of the other characters were alive in the remaining routine anyway. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

In that case you may enjoy: Shallow Grave (Ewan McGregor's first wide release. 'humor' might be a stretch, but pretty good) Eddie Izzard is hilarious Dark: Requiem for a Dream Ther general http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120706/ dark irish mafia Millers Crossing (coen mafia) American Beauty (hard to define dark, I loved it) -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

If you liked Memento, you might like Donnie Darko. Run, Lola, Run kicks arse, although the concept was probably more original when it first came out. Suicide Kings - qwirky with a nice twist The usual suspects - qwirky suspense Identity - yep, a twist The princess and the warrior - similar to Run, Lola, Run Shuan of the Dead - HILARIOUS zombie movie parody /warning, most films I would recommend are pretty subjective. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

They are both "Cohen-story-movies" Most of the time you either like the cohen brothers or you don't. The movies on the surfaces are very different. Under the surface, they both as kind of 'random exploratory story telling vehicles' And I kinda of dig that. I thought Ladykillers was a bit Poe-esque (kinda obvious since all the Poe references) -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

You are wearing fish boots? The awesome part about SK, is that they only had Leary for a few days of shooting, and his parts are almost 100% improv. Makes it all that much better. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Pretty good point Bill, which calls for a map like this: http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/purple_america_2004.gif Still a pretty interesting picture, and there is no sterotyping going on. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

I can totally understand what dave is saying here. I have been looking for the perfect tatoo for about 2 years. I want one, and only one, and what it cohesively bond the elements of my life into a statement. Why? Because I want to look at it and have it evoke a feeling, a reminder, etc Some of the same reasons you look at any art that is personally appealing. I have seen Dave's current tats, and the pumpkin is very impressive. I think dave wants a symbol, and and he knows what the symbols stands for. It is simply that the symbol has not become clear yet. I feel the same way and am waiting for a clear vision of something that sums my views about life, jumping, the open road, peace, strength. A mix of carpe diem, pura vida, BSBD, ride to live/live to ride. When I find the right symbol, then the time will be right, and it will serve a reminder of the lens through which I view life. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Well, a true list would be ridiculously long..but a summary: The life that God has given me in multiple ways, and each morning that starts with another breath. A family that loves me and sacrificed to help me grow. Sharing my time and this sport with the most attractive, most understanding, most loving person I have ever met. Friends and a freefly team that truly would do anything to help me. A job that pays my bills and meets my needs. The pain that has allowed me to know the joy. EDIT: And very importantly, the men and women who died to give me the freedoms I enjoy. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Well, not to disagree with you, but prior to putting my number on the list, I used to get probably 4-5 marketing calls a week on my cell phone. And while there might not be a cell registry, the regular one took my cell number. https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Yep, now perhaps you begin to get it. College is not real, never has been. It is an entry point, it an opportunity to give you the tools you need to succeed. Typically the professional world presents challenges you never saw in school. Of course the academic world and the tools it imparts increase your ability to deal with the challenges. Let me just state so you don't assume and respond again...I never said I thought college was a bad idea. I just said it was not the real world, and assuming it is, IS a bad idea. In fact, had more of my profs realized that, I would have been better equipped to handle the transition. Despite all the lectures you hear for 4 years, what the boss thinks is not the same as the prof. The ability to reconcile the two is what tuly proves to save your ass; that is was the most valuable lesson in college. I guess it's funny that people who we spend tens of thousands of dollars a year to teach us while attending college are surprised when we tell them we found different views on the outside of the institution. One of the ironies of system I feel is truly broken. At least if your argument skills are at all representative of your collective viewpoint, I am less worried about any more guns being banned. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

So, these are the criteria that the credited body of engineers in practice impose to verify that a student in fact may enter said body. It would seem like that verifies that school is practice. In any case, I have a job in the real world, a girlfriend in the real world, and my stomach is getting really hungry. All that combined, I am getting really tired of this thread. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

How you just address where I am wrong rather than make quips about how I am obviously out of touch. Why don't you educate me, that is what you do right? Tell me how the classroom mirrors the applied engineering world. I am eager to know. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
-
You are right, for the first time in this thread, I am not. In fact as I stated, my education is in information systems, the study of how systems are built, respond and produce output. However, I certainly will not be learning about engineering today, because rather than responding to anything I have said, mostly without prejudice I might add, you continue to respond with quick retorts rather than define anything that might resemble a documented opinion. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Goodness gracious....just when I was trying to be objective. Last time I checked physics relied very heavily on math, and physics problems could be worked on paper. Are you trying to say that engineers go play with steel to test it before building anything? I though all those kind of figures, specs, load ratings, etc were kept in mathematical format to allow design work on paper/computer, etc. I cannot believe the semantic tango going on here. It has nothing to do with 'apply'. It has to do with external forces that act upon an object. In the design/teaching/whatever you wish to call it phase, you work with a somewhat closed system. Could it possibly be acted upon by other forces in an unsheltered environment? If you really want to discard the analogy, fine, go for it. I was trying to unite viewpoints. Physics aside, people are not physics, and external influences are very hard to calculate. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

I fully agree with you. And there are laws already there to do that, background checks, etc. The all started with the postulation that a gun owner doing an evil thing would result in further legislation. As an honest question, with an open mind, keeping in mind that we already have waiting periods, background checks, etc.; what do you propose as an effective method to single out more 'people with bad impulse control' while at the same time, not presuming guilt without any prior record? -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Exactly....poor ability to isolate root cause. Besides without guns, the big people like dave would have to be body gaurds for us normal people, because brute strength would rule. That does not seem much fun. The point is...truly malicious people will always find a weapon. The challenge is making the risk involved so great, they choose not to for their own safety. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

The point is that math in the classroom is an exercise. Applied math in a bridge is the real world. Yes, indeed you mostly likely must have the exercise first. But it has not actually been used to yet. It is very possible that an engineer does very well in class, then makes a mistake on a real world project, and the project fails. I think that is an excellent analogy to legislation actually. "The best laid plans...." etc, etc. My particularly education is not engineering...rather it is in information systems. And I can tell you that any system is only as good as its outcomes. Any effective system must have a way to deal with negative feedback. What happens when a particular piece fails? When bad data is entered, etc? Surely in engineering you have provisions to a degree should the load exceed a spec? Because we all know murphy's law. So in the legislation world, what is the control process when people ignore the laws? Making more laws to ignore is not effective. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

Silly boy Dave...don't you know that asking for verification is the same as insinuating that you don't agree? It is a great argument tactic, and allows all kinds of political banter that avoid definitive statements that might be used for accountability later. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
