Using a Digital Alti or Eyeballs to Setup
Vertifly replied to Vertifly's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I jumped an analog alti right up until the time that I started jumping a 9-cell elliptical. Which is precisely when it seemed necessary to have one. A lot of experienced swoopers were saying that the digital was the way to go for setting up and having an accurate altitude for beginning a swoop - every time. This past weekend, my digital alti mysteriously did not make it to the DZ (ok, i forgot it). So the analog backup went back on the rist. Instead of relying on the altimeter to setup my swoops (because I do not trust an analog for accuracy at 600 feet or so - you know how that meter moves 500 feet just by tapping it), I "resorted" to eyeballing the ground. Amazing! Whalla! Presto! I felt more like a swoop pilot again. I paid much more attention to the setup, airspeed, ground speed, distances, momentum, etc....and whatever that sixth-sense is for coming in on landing the way I used to do. The conclusion: It seems to me that there are too many variable to consider for setup to rely on a set altitude for beginning a swoop. Nothing beats the eye. Is anyone willing to contest or agree that relying on a digital altimeter can be a hinderance for accuracy? I plan to refrain from looking at my altimeter to begin an approach from the setup point from now on. At least, for a little while to test the theory. -

Here is a push... Smoking Risks—Rules of Thumb Lung cancer risk—increases roughly 50 to 100 percent for each cigarette you smoke per day. Heart disease risks—increases roughly 100 percent for each pack of cigarettes you smoke per day. Switching to filter-tip cigarettes reduces the risk of lung cancer roughly 20 percent, but does not affect the risk of heart disease. Smokers spend 27 percent more time in the hospital and more than twice as much time in intensive care units as nonsmokers. Each cigarette costs the smoker five to twenty minutes of life. A smoker is at twice the risk of dying before age sixty-five as a nonsmoker.

LEARNING how to swoop, long or short recovery arc?
Vertifly replied to jheadley's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
yeah...gotta agree. Respect is something that is aquired by the experience of starting at the bottom and working your way up. My rig has a Katana 107 demo in it as this is being typed. 120 is the largest they make. It is a ground hungry machine that doesn't like tampering. -
golf caddy, sheet rock, pizza hut dishwasher, surf/ski shop, marines (harrier aircraft mech), radio shack, fitness instructor, destop support, hardware engineer, landlord, datacenter manager... pizza hut dishwasher was the worst followed closely by radio shack. it is the corporate retail thing that sucks for me.

LEARNING how to swoop, long or short recovery arc?
Vertifly replied to jheadley's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I think a short recovery arc is perfect for the training-wheel portion of learning swoops and front riser turns on approach. A lot of pro swoopers, it seems, spent time on 7 cells that are tapered while they were progressing. With one of those, you can learn to do 180's and even 270's with unbelievable accuracy for the amount of jumps that you may have. This makes them an excellent training tool. So I would have to go with the short recovery arc option until skills in knowing canopy principles is gathered....then move up...a little at a time. And if you fuck up, go a little too low, always have an out, then going to breaks may keep a person out of a cast. I am no expert swooper...but a decent weekend warrior. My progression has roughly been pd190 500 jumps, 150 spectre 1200 jumps, xfire119 350 jumps, xfire109 300 jumps, and now katana 107. A lot of my judgement is a result of the spectre that is mentioned in the list. And it also saved my femur on at least two (very memorable) occassions. -
