And your not the only one, hence religion was born.... the simple concept that when we die, thats its, the end, no more.... is simply to much for most people to live comfatably knowing... enter gods.... the afterlife. ...heaven and hell.... now we can all sleep safe at night knowing that when we die, we get to hang out with Elvis... ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

You already have safe storage requirements for the firearms you're still allowed to own, such as single-shot rifles and shotguns. Why aren't those same rules also sufficient for handguns? Why do you restrict ownership of something based upon the fear of theft? Would you ban cars because of the problem of car theft and dangerous joy rides? The freedoms that citizens can enjoy should not be based upon the lowest common denominator - the criminals. fear of theft [sic] Gangs of armed men are reported to be roaming the streets after a Wal-Mart had its entire stock of weapons stolen. "What angers me the most is that in these situations, you usually see the best from people. But here we saw also the worse, Just think, we could legalise gun ownership in the uk, then next time there is a national disaster, we could have gangs of tooled up civilians shooting the crap out of everything...awesome.... ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

Better ban cell phones, then...that seems to be one of their favorite targets! I'm sure they'll all go away after you do that... it's worked so well for the guns, after all.... Im not sure what you use cell phones for where you come from, but in the UK they were designed to allow people to communicate, and although i havent lived in the uk for 4 years now, i do believe that that is what they are still used for.... Now guns on the other hand, were invented to "kill" people... there is a small difference.. Same with Cars Jon, cars were not invented to "kill people" so all these analogies about comparing guns with cars, and phones etc is just silly now isn’t it….. ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

Does anyone else feel the need for an Alien forum?
br0k3n replied to Trae's topic in Speakers Corner
Ok so first off, I do believe there is life out there, mathematical probability that among the trillions of stars in the billions of galaxies there are millions of planets in age and proximity to a star analogous to our Sun. The chances seem very good that on some of those planets life has evolved. However, it is not inevitable that the results of that evolution would yield intelligence, much less intelligence equal or superior to ours. It is possible that we are unique. Have these little green men visited earth, unlikely.. Why …. Because we are just so far away, that travel to our planet would take years. The closest star (besides our Sun) is so far away from Earth that travel between the two would take more than a human lifetime. The fact that it takes our Sun about 200 million years to revolve once around the Milky Way gives one a glimpse of the perspective we have to take of interstellar travel. Have people been abducted by aliens… again unlikely…. This is again due to the fact that to abuct someone they would have to have travelled for a very long time to get here…. Interestingly if you trace Alien abduction stories back, it has been shown that they started to appear around 1950 and the birth of Science Fiction. "...despite the fact that we humans are great collectors of souvenirs, not one of these persons [claiming to have been aboard a flying saucer] has brought back so much as an extraterrestrial tool or artefact, which could, once and for all, resolve the UFO mystery." Philip Klass The 1950s brought us the golden age of modern science. We had begun to explore our environment more fully, started to reach out into space and developed fantastic inventions like the super computer. Some say that the 1950s put the SCIENCE in SCIENCE FICTION. Sci-fi stories became more believable because they were based on actual scientific theory or practical scientific fact. Those who claim to have been abducted by aliens may be neither crazy nor telling the truth. It might be better to think of them as sharing a cultural delusion. They are similar to the people who have near-death experiences of going down the dark tunnel to the bright light, or who see Jesus beckoning to them. These shared experiences do not prove that the experiences were not fantasies. They are likely due to similar brain states, and similar life experiences and death expectations. The alternatives are not either that they are totally crazy or that they really did die, go to another world, and return to life. There is a naturalistic explanation in terms of brain states and shared cultural beliefs. Alien abductees might also be seen as similar to mystics. Both believe they have experienced something denied to the rest of us. The only evidence for their experience is their belief that it happened and the account they give of it. There is no other evidence If there are beings clever enough to travel around the universe today, there probably were some equally intelligent beings who could have done so in ancient or medieval times. The delusions of the ancients and the medievals are not couched in terms of aliens and spacecraft because these are our century's creations. We can laugh at the idea of gods taking on the form of swans to seduce beautiful women, or of devils impregnating nuns, because they do not fit with our cultural prejudices and delusions. The ancients and medievals probably would have laughed at anyone who would have claimed to have been picked up by aliens from another planet for sex or reproductive surgery. The only reason anyone takes the abductees seriously today is because their delusions do not blatantly conflict with our cultural beliefs that intergalactic space travel is a real possibility and that it is highly probable that we are not the only inhabited planet in the universe. In other times, no one would have been able to take these claims seriously. ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+ -

These people didn’t turn there back on God, oh and look what happened, a baby died… [sic]When religion interferes with good sense and basic reasoning, it is often the weakest and most innocent who suffer most and most quickly - including children. WISH TV reports on a case from Indiana: The parents of the little girl say their religious convictions kept them from getting their daughter medical care. ... A report from the Johnson County sheriff's department says the church is called the General Assembly and Church of the First Born. It's located in Morgantown. Elders from the church gathered to pray for the infant when she got sick, but their prayers weren't enough to keep her alive. "These people don't believe in medical treatment. They have a religious belief that they're going to rely on prayer and medical treatment. Man's medical treatment supercedes God's faith, evidently,” said Lieutenant Mike McElwain, Johnson County sheriff’s department. ... "With all the medical advances, I mean, there's no need for a child to die in that circumstances,” said Lt. McElwain. "The way I understand it, a shot of penicillin could have taken care of the whole thing." Sadly, what the parents did may not even be illegal - too often religion is given a free pass to allow people to do all sorts of ridiculous things that would be criminal in other circumstances. People who neglect their children and let them die for "secular" reasons are put in jail. Parents who do it for "religious" reasons are, in many cases, just let go so that they can try again. How many times have you seen the news after such a disaster, how many people did you see post 9/11 thanking God for being alive…. What the hell gives these people pathetic ideas of grandeur that they were any better then the 1000’s that died, that they were chosen to be spared… how fucking disrespectful… ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

Paj, I’m sure you’re right… However what I found was I was that nearly every Christian site that reviewed this book gave it great review, funny that isn’t it… however ever impartial site would find this book no more then a work of fiction. Now let’s not forget that Amazon is out there to sell books, so it is unlikely they will post a scathing review…. Didn’t you mean to say “requires some imagination and wishful thinking” ?? ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

Excellent book! Ok I haven't read the book, so i did some research and read a bunch of reviews. to quote a few... [sic]It didn't surprise me that Lewis failed to make a logical case for Christianity since most Christian claims and Christian principles simply defy logic and can only be accepted on faith. [sic]He complains that the Christianity many people reject is the Christianity of six-year-olds. Unfortunately, this is precisely the level of faith of an awful lot of Christians; and I am not convinced that Lewis's faith carries believers beyond adolescence. [sic]Cotton candy apologetics - engaging and conversational but shallow. [sic]I do not mean to suggest that Lewis himself was unintelligent. The sections on Christian morality and theology do show evidence of rational consideration and careful reflection; the problem, as it seems to me, is that although he has clearly put a lot of thought into what it would mean for Christianity to be true, he has not invested comparable intellectual effort into arguing that Christianity is indeed true. Instead, he largely takes this for granted I therefore reccomend this more accurate Excellent Book ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

Mockingbird, it is not sciences job to prove that Gods do not exist, my point was that where there is a gap in our knowledge, people i.e you, are very quick to jump to the conclusion that it must therefore prove that gods exist. Your argument was that because we still don’t know 100% how the universe was formed, then it is “logical” to believe that it must have been created by a god. This is ILLOGICAL because you don’t have the information / facts to make that conclusion, you simply don’t know, and therefore are jumping to the conclusion that it must be a god. Do you understand??????? Define “REAL” god….. What makes your god any more real then any other…… I seriously doubt it to, but in a hypothetical situation when we can prove how the universe was created etc, what do you think would be left for the gods???? You’re the one jumping to conclusion, show me where your god reveled how the earth was created "EXACTLY", and not some paragraph in your particular dogma that states it was “just” created in 7 days by some magical power, because as a stated before all you are doing is answering one mystery with another… I don’t find it ridiculous at all; I find it intriguing that we as humans in this day and age still need it. I can only conclude that it must be a biological reaction, that I’m sure with time as we involve will decay and die. Your almost correct here, but what I think you mean is that, if a person chooses not to believe in a god, due to the complete and overwhelming lack of evidence to support “any” god, then they will have no faith.. Correct. If God was to appear before me today, I think it would be safe to say I would have faith… but I don’t think he is going to….. ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

This is called the “God of gaps” argument, because it uses gaps in our current understanding, and science’s present knowledge, to say “Well there must be a God”. I am afraid to say that it doesn’t work that way. Although there is plenty of things that we still don’t know or understand about the universe, is not evidence that Gods exist, its evidence that there is plenty of things that we still don’t know or understand about the universe. Our ancestors had Gods for lightning, for the wind, for thunder, as these were gaps in their understanding. However now we know what causes lightning, wind and thunder and therefore have no need for these gods anymore. So they disappear and are replaced with gods to explain other gaps in science. This process will continues for a very long time, until there is nothing left to discover, and at that point all Gods will be DEAD . Simply stating that “God did it” is a very weak, uniformed opinion, and most ilogical. If that is your belief then HOW did God do it, and the answer will be, “by unknown means/powers” which just goes to show that you are trying to answer one mystery with another. So answering that God created the earth, is no more answering the question of how the earth was created then by saying that “we don’t know yet” So why jump to conclusions??????????? ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

Sounds like you've got it all figured out. Also humans are animals that need to know everything, and aren’t satisfied with the fact that there are things in the world we don’t understand, and may never… instead of accepting this gap we make up explanations for them, and therefore we believe that this gap in our knowledge is filled. So people believe in Gods as they like the warm fussy illusion that all the loose ends are tied up, and everything is explained, because God fills the gap for them…. ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

I agree 100%. I made no such claim. There was only one assertion made between the two of us concerning the existence of God: Your assertion. Your burden of proof. Ok Ok, im getting a little carried away; obviously I can’t prove the non existence of “god” as much as the next person can’t prove his existence. Pieces of toast with images of the Virgin Mary don’t count as proof…. I think the issue is that I find it hard to understand is (unless it is biological) the human need for gods, were not cavemen any more, we are a highly intelligent (well most of us) highly evolved species, with no need to have these superstitions… ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

ok fine, look you will never prove god exists, and as time goes by the case for him not existing only grows stronger...
