Hello, I believe that regular humans generally fear meeting a violent death. Is it the same for BASE jumping humans? Death-by-BASE-jump is more often than not quick and extremely violent. The alternative is extremely violent and slow, which is even more dismal. I'm sure I can't imagine the fear that would come with the knowledge that my last few seconds had arrived. Would I even have time to be furious that my mortality would be achieved as a result of my desire? I absolutely do not want to meet my end at the end of my last BASE jump. For the nay-sayers to have an opportunity for an "I-told-you-so", for the press to give us another bad rap, for my family to suffer from my high threshold of risk, to be a statistic on "The List". I don't want to die doing this thing I love so much, and smear my blood all over its fun. Hate that. Just not quite lucky enough to come out unscathed. I remember the hospital, it's for sick people, not BASE jumpers. Funny, I was at a DZ yesterday doing that flying squirrel thing. One of the topics of discussion around the water hole was hospital. I am not the only one who finds a certain irony in the fact that while I lay in that hospital bed I couldn't wait to get up so I could go out and try that same old silly trick again?! Security is so high here on the Bay, I gave up a pile of regular objects, even sold the BASE Invader (boat). Had an experience one recent July 4th. Had the master plan for a prominent span. They were not looking for me in particular, just someone like me. As (bad) luck would have it, someone behind an array of video monitors wanted to know what was in that mysterious black bag. I spent the holiday behind bars, and then the charges were dropped as I never actually did any crime. Got my gear back the very next day. Hindsight is usually 20-20. Symmetry is important, but you may be going too far. Do you measure out the bite on each side with a micrometer? When you close the rig after packing, are all those neat little folds going to stay in the exact place you put them? From stitching to rubberbands and S-folds, a degree of symmetry is lost at each step. Always pack for an on-heading opening as best you can, but be prepared for a 180 with line twists on each jump. Depends really on what you plan to do. Do you have any BASE experience? Where do you plan to land? The nature of your post leads me to believe you are not a BASE jumper. If that is the case, and you are going with a water landing as your plan, then I will put in some time to help you find appropriate gear. I have an abundance of water gear available. If you plan to go to Bridge Day and insist on a dry landing, I can't help. I was taught to keep an accurate skydiving logbook in 1981. Keeping track of your first 100 jumps was important. Twenty something years later, nobody really looks at your skydiving logbook anymore, unless you ask them to. After logging the first 100, I developed a compulsive habit of logging each and every jump, accurately. It has carried on in my BASE jumps, all jumps accurately logged, haven't missed any. It is very cool to go back through the books occasionally and relive the precious seconds. Yes you can. You can do anything you want. Why do you have a dog? Is it for the dog's pleasure or your own? People do all kinds of things with their pets, and the pets have little to say about it. About a dozen years ago I heard a comment, something like; "yeah, BASE is cool 'cuz it's free"! "No planes, no manifest, just climb up and jump off". BASE has been one of the most expensive "free" things I've ever done. You get what you pay for Mr. Tower Rat. Quality goods are usually not free, and free goods are usually not quality. Where do you want your money to go? To a good instructor, or a good surgeon? Now that's not to say that even with good instruction you may not eventually give some of your money to a surgeon.
