  1. You should keep an eye on the classifieds here at DZ.com. I bought a used cypres (3 yrs old) there about a month ago for $650. It's a lot easier to afford a used cypres if you are already spending several thousand on new gear.
  2. I just got a new W-13 that was sized to fit my Hornet 190 main and PD176R. It is REALLY tight...but that's what I wanted. I'm not sure what the -1 part of the container size designation is, but it seems odd that it would be tight for a Pilot 150. I don't have any problem rotating the bag in mine. You should probably find out what kind of reserve you have and give Sunrise Rigging a call. -Sam
  3. You might try looking through some of the links in Hooknswoop's "So, you want to be a rigger?" post in this forum (I haven't figured out the linking thing yet). I think most of your questions will be answered there somewhere. I'm not a rigger and I don't know shit. -Sam
  4. OK. I think I got it fixed now. The two housings are held together by what looks like heat shrink tubing. It was kind of a bitch but I got the offending tube to rotate inside of the heat shrink and it looks good now. I'll have a rigger look at it just to be sure. It just seems odd that the manufacturer would install it like that. Thanks for the replies. -Sam
  5. Yes, I think that is what it is. I'm not really up to speed on all that terminology. Anyway, here is a picture of it:
  6. Yeah, that description may have been a little hard to understand. It's the right hand cutaway cable and it's just twisted around so that the flat part of the housing end that should lay up against the riser is facing towards the main lift web. I tried untwisting it but it is only a few inches long and attached to the other cable housing so it takes a bit of force to do it and it just springs back when you let it go. I'm pretty sure it would still work, but am concerned about wear on the loop and possibly a little higher cutaway force. I will take a picture with my phone when I get home (I really need to break down and buy a digital camera). -Sam
  7. I got my new beer rig in last week and I noticed that one of the release cable housing ends seems to be rotated 180 degrees. The little white loop is routed correctly, but the loop has to wrap around (180 degrees) and then through the hole in the housing end. Is this anything to worry about, or am I just being too anal? Thanks, Sam
  8. This is a no-brainer for me. Jump #50: My girlfriend decided she wanted to do a tandem jump. After much deliberation (he told me later) the TM decided to ask me to tag along. I never hooked up with them in freefall but it was great to see her having the time of her life up there. She really loved it and is now planning on doing AFF next spring. It's pretty cool that she now understands why I spend all of my weekends at the airport, but I'm not sure how I'm going to fund two skydiving addictions (I have enough trouble with my own) -Sam
  9. After AFF you will be able to solo or jump with a coach. A coach will work with you on your RW skills in preparation for your A license. Usually you just pick up the cost of their jump ticket. I can't speak for your DZ, but at mine the AFF JMs rarely jump with you after AFF. They let the coaches take over after AFF. No reason to stress...just relax and enjoy your dives. You don't need you worry about passing or failing anymore. As for tracking and trying new equipment: You can work on your tracking (or any other RW skills) any time you wish. Solo dives are how I learned to track. A coach can probably help out here too. You should be able to start renting different equipment as soon as you finish AFF. I really enjoyed my firt solo after AFF...I think you will also.
  10. They may even have an RSL Yep. Plus a belly mounted automatically deployed airbag system. I'm all about not having to save my own life.
  11. Relax. I was just kidding. That would be way too expensive to replace my cutter and get a repack before every jump. Besides that...my reserve is way too small for me to actually land
  12. Why bother? I have a cypres. Actually, I have always wanted to watch it...I'm just afraid of screwing up my body position. Maybe I will give it a shot this weekend.

    Dumbass

I wonder if this guy is related to Lutz? Really...I think I could have come up with a better excuse than that.
  14. There is an article in the latest Skydiving magazine about this. If I remember correctly the author did get a cypress to fire while diving under a Velocity.
  15. OK...that's what I wanted to hear. I won't worry about it anymore. Thanks, Sam
  16. I have the alarms set at follows: 1st @ 3500ft, 2nd @ 2500ft, and 3rd @ 1500ft. I try to pull right at 3500ft. The first alarm was just sounding as my canopy was throwing out the pilot chute (it turned off as soon as main was open). Once open I usually have to untangle the slider and toggles. I noticed the second alarm sounding around the time I was releasing the brakes, or shortly thereafter. It really isn't that big of a deal to me as long as it works in freefall (it seems to). But my coach tells me that there is something wrong and I should send the thing back.
  17. Should a Pro-Dytter be making noise after your canopy is open? I just got one and put 4 jumps on it last weekend. On all but the first jump, the Dytter went off just after I got the slider stowed (2nd alarm). I wasn't turning fast or anything and my canopy is only loaded at ~1.3. Is this common? Thanks, Sam
  18. I too am in the market for a jumpsuit. I was pretty much sold on the tony FF suit until my DZO bought one of the Kurupee suits. It looks really good and appears to be very well made. He seems to be really happy with it. I did notice that the colors aren't quite as bright as on other suits (they seem kinda muted). But all in all I think they are a really good buy at $139. I will be placing an order for mine as soon as I get my next paycheck. I also stumbled upon this bueaty while shopping around. Not suggesting this one's for you...it just made me laugh -Sam
  19. I think this is the website for that TV show. They have a "Did we screw up" page...but it is screwed up. http://www.maximumexp.com/ It's the Lutz guy I would really like to get my hands on. Edit to add that the "Did we screw up" page is no longer screwed up. I sent them a really nice note.
  20. I was in your position just a few months ago. My instructors and coach talked me out of buying a rig then, and I am glad they did. Then I was looking at buying a 235 main...30 jumps later I am under a 190. Aside from the wingloading issue, you are going to learn a lot about gear in the next 50 jumps. For now, I would recomend getting an altimeter, helmet, goggles and maybe a jumpsuit. Spend the next 35-50 jumps trying trying different canopies and then you will have a much better idea what will serve you better in the long run. - Sam
  21. I thought that add looked familiar: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=2675&d=1
  22. Yeah, sorry...I think I see what is going on there now. The email I got made it sound like someone had actually hacked the site or something.
  23. Someone at work just told me to go to google.com and type "weapons of mass destruction" in and hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button (not the normal search button). The fake error message is kind of entertaining.
  24. I think they are having some problems with the web site right now. Last I heard (yesterday) they are planning on a helicopter and possibly a hot air baloon, in addition to Mullin's King Air. I will PM nitrodan (he's one of the owners) and hopefully he can get some of the details posted here.
