I didn't know we had any other towns besides Wichita and Kansas City Seriously though, I think the dropzones go where the people are.
-
Those were both good, but I think Good Stuff was the best bang for the buck. The Soul Flyers DVD looks promising...but I am still waiting for mine to get here.

I would have to agree with that. In my short (75 jumps) skydiving carreer I have been caught in turbulence quite a few times and I have tried all three approaches: Brakes, full glide and double fronts. The double fronts seem to make the turbulence more violent but the 1/4 brake approach caused my canopy to collapse and reinflate violently pointing the wrong way every time. I was taught that 1/4 brakes are best for turbulence, but I am thoroughly convinced that is bullshit. My canopy is big and lightly loaded, so this might not apply to everyone, but I know full glide works best for me.

I think one of the links is broken. The parachute riggers knowledge test guide is now at: http://av-info.faa.gov/data/knowledgetestguide/faa-g-8082-15a.pdf Thanks for compiling all of that info, it's been a big help.

Might help if you listed where you are from. I think different countries have different regulations. Also, I am assuming by "trainers lissince" you are reffering to getting trained to be a licensed jumper and not a license to train jumpers? Usually the minimum age is 18. There are lots of good gear stores, do a search on the internet. Might want to check out the classifieds here too.

That sucks. I think that my computer came with a pre-loaded mp3 "jukebox" that had drivers for my mp3 player (Rio S30) already in it. I can not remember the name of the software package, but I will check it out when I get home to see what it was and if it has any Sony drivers. A little off topic... but has anyone here ever jumped with their mp3 player?

I have a 190 main and 176 reserve in a Wings W-13 container. We weighed it right after putting it together and it was 23lbs. I think I use 30 lbs. for gear though, allowing 7 more for helmet, jumpsuit, altimeter, lunch, etc. That might be a little on the conservative side for me, but with your gear being a little larger than mine, I'd say 30 lbs. for everything would be real close.

No. In both Wichita and Dallas the TSA Agents recognized the hook knife and apparently it is an approved item because it has an enclosed blade (I overheard some of the conversation between the agents running the X-ray). Next time I will probably put it in the checked baggage...just to be safe.
-
I don't think you will really need anything. It probably wouldn't hurt to bring along this little editorial from the TSA website: http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1147.xml I went out to Perris last week via Dallas and San Diego and didn't have any problems. The agent muttered something about parachutes and parachute knives (forgot about my hook knife)...but they didn't even ask to open the gear bag. I got the idea that they have been educated about parachutes.

I think that your discription is correct when decsribing the movement of a simple object that is not subject to any external aerodynamic forces (like the vortex shedding Kallend was speeking about). It is actually very easy to design an aircraft that has its center of mass forward of it's center of pressure but will never recover from a disturbance. If the aerodynamic forces that are trying to return the aircraft to it's original state are too strong, the aircraft will overshoot it's original position. Depending on the damping of the system...the oscillations can continue and get larger or may dampen over time (or stay the same in the case of neutral damping). It gets even more complex when you start to consider flexible structures (aeroelasticity) and/or automatic control systems. I am starting to get a little geeked out here I think I will go back to lurking the talkback forum.
-
Yes, I think you are right about the vortex shedding. I am not really sure if it matters what drives the object to instability. If it does not tend to damp out with time...I usually call it dynamic unstability. I guess the point I was trying to make is that the rigid body might tend to be statically stable, but still might go for an exciting ride when actually put into the airflow.
-
An engineer would call the belly to earth arched position "statically stable", but not necessarily "dynamically stable". Hence the potato chipping that is common with students. Basically, as long as your center of pressure is higher than your center of mass you will tend to fall in that position. You may oscillate wildly though. I think there is a clip in Good Stuff where he shows a car that they attempted to stabilize with a heavy weight attached by four cables. It did fall belly to earth but it was scary looking as the weight swung wildly around in circles. I think that you would have the same problem with a stiff freeflyer. I have only tried it once...but it felt really damn unstable to me

If this poll appeals to anyone...it's people without jobs. Don't you people ever sleep?

Brian Germain has a link to this guys site on his "about us" page. It says something about Big Air Sports doing some research for the "civilian space program". I wonder if Brian didn't plant the seed in this guys head.

Yeah, thats a bit of a drive for you. I am excited though. The first time he came this summer I had a busted foot. The second time my wallet was busted. Now both have recovered and I have NEW GEAR!!! Also, I just bumped the events thread and committed Nitrodan to providing "lots of beer". Pretty sneaky huh

SKYDIVE WICHITA HALLOWEEN MULLINS BOOGIE!!
sammer replied to nitrodan's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Bump Just wondering who all's comming out this weekend. Nitrodan is still working on the chopper deal. But we've got Mullins King Air...and we will have lots of beer (right Dan?) -
Anyone here planning on coming to Skydive Wichita for the Halloween boogie this weekend?
-
That should be doable. They told me 4 weeks and it took 27 days from the day I faxed my order form (this was about a month ago). If Paige tells you 3 weeks it will be 3 weeks. -Sam

Cool... that will be a bad-ass mouse.
-
OK. I'd go with black mouse/orange buttons. I still think the racing stripes would kick ass.
-
Might wanna make sure it doesn't dissolve the plastic first. Seems like I melted something with spray paint once. I vote for black with orange racing stripes.
-
Thanks, that was very helpful. I think I have one on the way now. Just one more: Do you guys know if DVDs come in both PAL and NTSC formats like VHS tapes, or are all DVDs the same? -Sam

I just noticed that the Soul Flyers web site is finally up. http://www.flyyourbody.com But everything is in another language (French, I think). Has anyone here been able to successfully place an order for the Soul Flyers video yet? I think I found the order form...but I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

A freind of mine recently purchased a used Spectre that had been labeled this way by it's former owner. They had used little round colored stickers (I've seen them before, used for price tags). They used a different color for each line group. You might try something like this, it would be pretty cheap and easily reversable.

It does seem to be a commonly reported problem among Hornet owners. There have been several posts here regarding "bucking Hornets", and I think that most of them have happy endings after the owners got the brake lines lengthened. From what I have gathered, the Hornets just usually come with brake lines that are too short. I was having the same problem with mine and it required both lengthening the lines and getting longer risers. I have not flown very many different canopies, but it seems to me that the control range is a bit longer on the Hornet (it's really hard for me to stall it). So just lengthening the brake lines without getting longer risers didn't seem to be prudent. Hope that helps, Sam
