What jump # did you first land standing up?
DeNReN replied to Nickkk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
While I still wont agree on the age thing......I will very much agree on the fact that many factors influance the odds of students standing up landings. I was trained to land a old skybarge F111 canopy..did what I was told and have 39 stand up landings out of a pathetic 40 jumps....does this mean I know anything??...hell NO..........just doing what I was taught to do. I have a brand spanking new (slippery as snot) canopy sitting here..havent jumped it yet(container and reserve should be here next week).......... can I flare it the same as the manta's?.....hell NO....guess what........I have to be trained how to land it...and I am also going back on radio for instructor guidance on landing.(I do intend on standing up the landing, but will plf if in doubt.) You are also correct on the personal experiance thingy......just because one person has good luck with landings(or anything for that matter) does not mean that all or anyone else will have the same good fortune...... Personally ...I have been good on landing older canopies.....a newer ZP may be the death of me Btw....I suck in freefall Disclaimer....I am a newb..I know squat...above text is my oppion only and is not to be taken seriously!!! -
What jump # did you first land standing up?

"People jumping newer student gear will have a much easier time standing up their landings than people on older gear. " I hate to disagree.....but even with my limited numbers/experiance...I know that is not true(unless your talking rounds etc.)....My 1st jump was on a Goliath (320..330??)....quite a old canopy but was able to flare at the proper time with instructor help via radio and had a perfect stand up landing. Old Manta 288's make up the majority of student canopies at my small home DZ now.....and many(dare I say most) 1st jump students have stand up landings. Proper training and landing guidance have a far bigger impact on student landings then the age of gear being used.(remember..I am not talking shit gear...just old) Disclaimer...I am a newb...zip for experiance....plz do not take anything I say seriously -

I would tend to disagree somewhat.....F1 cars create a low pressure underneath (would be quite intresting to see the actual numbers)...as they pass over a manhole cover the higher pressure of air inside the manhole would tend to push the cover up.........one car alone may not lift it out...only rattle it.........but 2,3,4,5 cars in a row.......I wouldn't want to be driving car #5 ......I dont believe the tires passing over a manhole cover could dislodge one....the contact patch is not that large and the tires not that sticky(street tires dont dig into asphalt...the roughness of the ashpalt digs into the tire...opposite of a offroad tire)..there just not gooey enough to lift one out passing over at high speed(esp this year with the new tire rule ) as for sucking a average human body up into a passing F1 car.....hmmmm..........if the body was in a long trench....prob wouldnt even notice it sept for a lot of noise....if the body was in a more enclosed space.......the force may move it slighty, but the time frame involved wouldnt allow for it to get sucked up and mangled Note: I have no backing for my above statement.....just using what little common sence and knowlage I do have

Its Murphys Law ...If you had gone the rain would have continued...and no one would have jumped...you sacrificed your jumps for the good of the others...just make sure that they know this
