ahem... from the AIM: "1-1-9. Instrument Landing System (ILS) a. General 1. The ILS is designed to provide an approach path for exact alignment and descent of an aircraft on final approach to a runway. 2. The ground equipment consists of two highly directional transmitting systems and, along the approach, three (or fewer) marker beacons. The directional transmitters are known as the localizer and glide slope transmitters. 3. The system may be divided functionally into three parts: (a) Guidance information: localizer, glide slope; (b) Range information: marker beacon, DME; and (c) Visual information: approach lights, touchdown and centerline lights, runway lights." I got the hairy eyeball early on from a DPE for saying the ILS has two parts, wouldn't want others to suffer the same fate... jeff D-16906 CFII

Peleng lens on a Canon Rebel XT question
ffejdraga replied to hydrant's topic in Photography and Video
Nope, no freefall. I just did a hop and pop (i think out of the cessna...although that doesnt matter..). The camera was around my neck by means of string that i tied to the camera. As I jumped I sjust held the camera to my chest with my left hand and threw out with my right. Then, once I was open, i wrapped the string around my hand and held the camera up as high as i could. Thanks for the compliments, it is one of my favorite pics too. jeff D-16906 -

Look into this guys site: lots of generic photo info: http://www.kenrockwell.com lots of good info check out the how tos and stuff. enjoy it all, it is all about the process of learning. jeff D-16906 -
Peleng lens on a Canon Rebel XT question
ffejdraga replied to hydrant's topic in Photography and Video
One thing that is nice about a super wide lens like that is that focus is *almost* a non issue because the depth of field is so large since it is so wide. I have the same lens, and I have some nice pics with it. At first i was getting overexposed shots (remember that the sun will be in almost every pic...lots of light let in) but once I got that figured out, it was sweet. Just experiment and come up with a formula over time. Like Lori said, f8 will be a good place to start. The Fstop will not change the depth of field too much, but i have found that it just controls the exposure level of the pic...meaning that pics of different f stops will all have the same stuff in focus, it is just a matter of how light or dark the pic is. see attached pic. have fun, experiment. jeff D-16906 -
HELL YES!! I went there about 10 years ago, and have been trying for about 10 years to get back there. It is one of my all time favorite places in Italy (i have only been around the northern part....) So the deal: cinque terre means five lands, or five towns (lands taken for towns, literal vs. practical translation.) You get to the first (or last) and then you can hike up into the mountains then over, down to the next town. All the town are pushed up to the base of the mountains, and are very close to the sea...the hikes go to about 1000' or so, and i think the longest one is 5 miles between the towns. it is not hardcore hiking, but the view is phenomenal the whole way. Plus each town has its own flavor, and you can find really nice "hotels" to stay in (more like BB with no breakfast...one room available type places..) which go for about $20 US a night (or were in 1996). Plus, most of the "hotels" have views of the sea....very cozy and basic, (just a bed and sink and toilet, rustic) The people there are super nice, and it helps if you speak italian, but is not required. Awesome place, spectacular views, cool people....good easy hikes. There are places to eat around there, seafood is plentiful. Parties, no idea... http://homepage.sunrise.ch/homepage/avong/cinque_terre/ there is a link i found with lots of info... and attached is a pic i took from one of the trails... yeah, I loved it there. if you go let me know how you liked it when you get back. have fun, jeff D-16906 (edited to add link)

"Open the folder, then dump them directly to the CD, takes me about 6 mins total time to get a CD to a student " Or, you can just use a standalone burner, plug the card in and about 1 minute later have the cd ready to go. I use the one from Alera mentioned in one of these posts here a while back....works awesome! jeff

Yeah, Citry of lost children.... That is about the weirdest movie I have ever seen....damn. Others are Fantastic Planet or La Planete Sauvage as it is known internationally. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070544/posters Glad to see that Gummo got mentioned...nice bath the kid takes in brown water while eating spaghetti...nasty, odd. Gummo is just fucked up. jeff D-16906 (edit to add link)

ffejdraga replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
Hell yeah man! there are so many classics from that era. The Wayback Machine" Simon MR. Greenjeans. Back when when Morgan freeman used to have a huge afro from the Electric Company The Old Tootsie pop commercial with the cartoon owl..."a one, a two a threeeee" "i guess the world will never know" How a bill becomes a law, and other school house rock stuff. Here is another obscure one: "we're not candy, even though we look so fine and dandy. When you're sick we come in handy, BUT We're not candy" 321 Contact the bloodhound gang. anyone remember when "momen chants"(no idea the spelling on that) was on 321 Contact....anyone... Weird mimes dressed all in black with rolls of toilet paper on their faces. The classic "one two three four five, six seven eight, nine ten eleven tw-elve-elve elve" from sesame street with the pinball cartoon... Picture pages with Bill cosby's magic pen that made the noise when he scribbled. OF course, there was King Friday, elaine, mr. mcfeely (yeah nice name) and the rest of the crew. But what about shylock the squirrel? Anyone remember that show? I cant remember the name. " I love it when a plan comes together" Tales of the Gold Monkey with Jake and corky. Anyone remember The Voyagers? Jeff and Phineas Bogg. Or wizards and Warriors, lasted one season (or less) "Believe it or not, I'm on top of the world, I never thought i could feel so free" Pete Thorton, Jack Dalton, and good ole Angus Who could forget KITT riding off into the sunset? Who remembers "V"? the ultimate miniseries Tom Baker or Peter Davidson? "and knowing is half the battle" "form of an eagle.""shape of an ice ramp" 20 little vehicles was way better than five lions. and transformers beat gobots any day. "from the minds of men, the mightiest machine-TRANZOR Z" with the female robot Aphrodite that used to shoot her boobs at her would be attackers. Dont forget the little communist Smurfs Roscoe peee coll train (with Flash) how about movies? Scout's honor starring little arnold. or The Earthling, starring a very young Ricky Schroeder. Speaking of the Ricker, did you ever want a train to ride around your living room, a mallard duck phone, or a race car bed, or arcade games in your living room? Time bandits. Flash Gordon, the cheesy movie with that Blonde dude. Did you ever think that an old guy was going to show up if you if got a really high score in a video game and help you become a Starfighter? "where's the beef?" "I've fallen and i can't get up!!" "hey your mean Joe Greeen" "this is your brain...." "I learned it by watching YOU" Who remembers what ALF stood for? Remember when the former Maytag guy was on Different Strokes, and he had Arnold and Dudley over, but made them watch cartoon porn with their shirts off?....ick. "whatsa happening, Hot stuff?" "would you like to play a game?" "Something D-O-O economics" Who's the Boss, Gimme a Break because Eight is Enough and those are the Facts of Life. Anyone with me on these? Or do I hear those damn crickets again?? Uh, that is all I have for now. Thanks for viewing a slice from my childhood! jeff D-16906 -

Do they climb out, or are the TMs diving out from the crotch? If they are climbing out and doing apoised exit, climb underneath the strut and look up at them. Your orientation is your head is close to the front(not that close...) two hands on the strut, strut above you, two feet on the step. Gives a really nice shot, but only if the TM is poised on the step. jeff D-16906

When i was there a few years ago, some of the highlights are: Siena. Nice little town with medieval walls....the city of siena is just normal, Italian city....but inside the medieval walls is awesome, like stepping back in time 700 years. lots of old buildings, churches and other stuff. Very cool. Venice Very cool, but pretty expensive. What can you say, Ahhhhhhh Venice. Cinque Terre This was my avorite place in Italy, definitely go if you can....it means "five lands(or towns)" and there are 5 little seaside towns pushed up against the mountains. You get to the first town via train, then you hike up a little bit into the mountains, and walk over and then down to the next one. Repeat untill you have seen all the towns. The hike is beautiful, and not hardcore at all. I think the longest distance from one town to the next is just over a mile, and the rest are less than one mile. (don't quote me on that....) It is an amzing place, the trails look down to the crystal blue Mediterrean sea, itis phenomenal. It is the NW coast of Italy, on the way to France, close to Florence and Pisa. HERE are some pics and info about it for you. Also, if you are going to be in Florence for any bit of time, right near the Duomo, down one of the side streets is a gelato place called Vivoli. This is hands down the best gelato place there is in Italy. (Yes, I have tried almost all of them...). Go there, enjoy some great Italian gelato. You won't want to eat ice cream after that, you will be a gelato SNOB!! other places I have been there are: Rome, Genoa, Pisa, and Padua. All good, with their own merits, but as you are on a shorter schedule, try Siena and Cinque Terre...off the beaten path so to speak. Have a great trip! Va bene! jeff D-16906

Does anyone have GPS experience?
ffejdraga replied to YISkyDive's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I know what you are after. Last summer, a guy named Don Cooke who was writing a book called "Fun with Gps", came up to our dropzone to get info about skydiving with gps's . he basically went all over, and found different uses for gps'....all kinds of different things. Anyway, he came to the dropzone to see how skydivers might use it, and what they were looking for for info. He had Garmin gecko's and foretrexes that we used. We had two birdmen using one each, one speed diver, and me, using it specifically to gain knowledge of my swoops. It collected data, and then through some type of software, overlaid the track I laid with a satellite image, to see how it looked over the ground. It was awesome info. The guy who is writing the book owned the company that Mapquest uses for software, so it is pretty good stuff All the graphs and pics can be found here: http://www.jumptown.com/GPS/gps.html all different stuff... Orange Airport is 555' MSL, I am 6'1 and was wearing the Gecko on top of my helmet.... The gecko was set at max info, so it took a measurement once every second, and the dots represent each measurement. So, the further apart the dots, the faster I was going. Enjoy, jeff D-16906 -
I think this one wins the prize.... although it could be close between Thanatos and this... You have the pic.....shoulda posted it along with the story jeff D-16906
