slowing down before touching down any ideas
ffejdraga replied to bendover's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I have about 1000 jumps or so on my xaos 21 120. I know it is bigger, and only a 21, but the flare is deep and it nearly impossible for me to stall on landing. In fact, everytime my hands are down as far as they go, and it just keeps on going. I used to have the same problem of stopping it, but my solution was to bring it lower as I flare, then bring it back up ,"stand UP " to the landing, like someone else has said. I was levelling off at normal extension of my body, but it sucked stepping down to land, so then I bring my feet up a little, and the problem is solved. I use rears almost every landing, get what I need from them, and then back to toggles. Try not to "milk " the rears for all they are worth, brings a lot of induced drag into the mix. I have gotten that thing to let me off with a couple of steps in no wind, it is just a matter of managing the flare more, and using all you have got. If you are jumping in "lots of wind" you should have no problem getting that thing to come to a stop. Give it a few hundred more jumps, approached cautiously, and you will see. be careful, jeff agard D-16906 -
I jump a pC101 with a kenko .42 lens sidemounted on a hawkeye. It works sweet for AFF, you can see my hands, and the students bpdy, and the other JM really well. I have about 400 AFF jumps with that setup. jeff D-16906

All the little things about cameraflying...
ffejdraga replied to lewmonst's topic in Photography and Video
Being a newbie at it is when you find the most shit will happen. then you get into a good groove, and that is when things like "turning the camera off instead of on" get replaced by "camera totally shits the bed in freefall" happens. For a while, you would be surprised at what combinations will happen. Then you will have it all down, and that is when camera(read: expensive) problems will appear. That is when doing video really can suck. That being said, even when you have 1000s of camera jumps, you can still do stupid things like many in the list. Oh well, you missed a jump. Life goes on. jeff D-16906 -

Awesome list man! Yep been there. I didnt see getting a lens ripped off by a riser. and then you realize the lens will still work, because it was just dangling from your camera, so you somehow find time to gaffers tape it back on, because of course you are back to back. jeff D-16906 -
Camera dudes started shooting digital stills
ffejdraga replied to efs4ever's topic in Photography and Video
Unfortunately, No. You can only burn all the pics on the card, no choosing with the one i sent. The solution is to buy a few 256 or 512 cards (I saw a Sandisk Compact Flash 512 extreme at Costco for $49 the other day...super cheap!!) and keep those on hand for tandems and such...then keep another card on hand for your own work, just in case. I have to 256mb cards for tandems, and one 512, and it is all the memory I have needed so far. So, when I would make a cd for the students, i would then make one for myself and keep it going. The nice thing about that Alera is that it does multisession, so you just keep one cd (or more if you want extra copies) going until it fills up. It is a really nice feature. I didnt save all the tandems I did, but when there were super good ones witha n exceptional exit, or good facial expressions, I saved those for myself. Once the cd was full, i would start a new one. The nice thing about digital is once you have made the investment of allt he electronicas and peripherals, you are pretty much set, not spending more money (until the new model comes out that you just HAVE TO have...) do it. jeff D-16906 -
yeah yeah...i dont really have buck teeth....it is the switch. again I say jeff D-16906 btw, newshooter I sent it to harbortronics (.com) and had it modded for $200. jeff

Here is a pic of me taken by Joel Burnap, basically my speedlight is attached by camera lock velco (the heavy duty platic kind) to the top of my camera mount. A few stow bands are around it also for peace of mind. Then I bought the Nikon cable that connects the flash to the camera. It is 5' long, so I had an electronic engineer cut it down and splice it together for me. Now it is about 8" long. Works good, could get snagged, but I feel it would rip off and break first. Hope this helps, jeff agard D-16906

Camera dudes started shooting digital stills
ffejdraga replied to efs4ever's topic in Photography and Video
Yeah, I have something very similiar. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=312193&is=REG You plug in the card, and make a cd. It takes about 30 seconds to burn all the pics from one skydive. I was the only one at my dz offering digital, and it was so much better for the customer and me when i could do it. Even most people who didnt want it because they didnt have a computer switched over once i told them that they take the cd to walgreens/cvs/brooks/osco/walmart in the same manner as their roll of film. Do it, go digital. Dont hesitate. Cheaper and easier in t he long run. (film about $1.25/roll. Cds cost about $.25 each) thank you and goodnight! jeff D-16906 -
Yeah man, nice mod. very cool, thanks for the info (although i dont need it because of the mod i have, but that is good for a backup. thanks! jeff D1-6906

Modify still camera to have a remote shutter release???
ffejdraga replied to crazydiver's topic in Photography and Video
have you tried Harbortronics? www.harbortronics.com you would send the camera to them, and they modify it and send it back. They do great work (can be pricy though. Send an email out to Mark there, he is the man. It will cost you, but not sure how much, but they are very good at doing it. Either that, or find some type iof hardware engineer. it is pretty simple for them...just gotta find one. jeff D-16906 -
All i gotta say is if the complete movie is a s good as the trailer, then it should definitely not be kept a secret fromt he rest of the world! Nice job Jarno, sweet trailer!!! I was no near the Herc boogie, but heard all about it here, wished i was, but oh well, couldnt do it. But , I would pay for a copy of that video...kinda live vicariously through all of you who were there.... jeff D-16906 nice work....

I'll chime in here, being anothe on the Nikon side of the world. I have a D70, and I do have it modified. Yep my warranty is void, but most things that are likely to happen to a camera as a result of taking it in freefall are anot covered by the warranty anyway. It takes sweet pics, and there is *basically* no limit to how many pics you can get in freefall. It fires as rapidly as i ever need it to, and once you are off the switch, the buffer refreshes really quick. I shoot it with a conceptus tongue switch, and i havent missed a shot yet. That camera is great, I truly love it. jeff D-16906

Anyone shooting digital and what camera works for you
ffejdraga replied to Catherines's topic in Photography and Video
and now for a different opinion, I would say to stick with the digital Nikons, even though some of cameras do not come with remote ports or shutter realease ports and have to be modified. Nikon cameras are a bit heavier, but they are also rugged and robust. They stand up well to the abuses of freefall and such (not saying that canon's dont....) I currently shoot with a modified D70. Works sweet, pictures are fabulous. my two cents, that is all. jeff D-16906 -
I hear you Deuce. I do. But as I am the only one at the dropzone offering digital, I feel that it wouldnt be right. i would feel shady charging more. jeff D-16906

Currently at Jumptown, I am the only one offering digital stills to the students. It is pretty hush hush, as in i dont broadcast it to the world, and when i meet them, i give them the choice.... a roll of film or a cd of digital pics, one choice only, and I also tell them that i am the only one, so dont tell their friends about the digitals. I take jpegs at max resolution, which gives me about 70 pics on a 256 card with a D70. I shoot whatever i can, and It is usually about 35-40 including more shots inside the airplnae, and more shots of the landing (usually with film I have about 2 or 3...sometimes 0 shots left for the landing.) As i am dubbing the video, I am also writing the pics to a cd using one of THESE DEVICES so that i hand them the cd when it is done. the benefit is also that i can throw in a cd for myself and keep all the pics i take. No extra charge for this. jeff D-16906

I have one, and i cannot get the thing to fire with it. I bought the camera used from a friend of mine, who has taken 100s of pics with that combo, and many of them ended up published. samples of his work with that camera can be seen here: http://www.philroberson.com/skydivephotos2003.html I dont know why it doesnt work for me, and I coudnt be bothered to figure it out, so I bought a D70....I should probably sell the coolpix 5000 and the digisnap, any takers.... jeff D-16906

Tandem Cutaway Story and a question
ffejdraga replied to turtlespeed's topic in Photography and Video
Seems like everything worked out ok, so not much needed to change. One thing I make sure of is adequate separtion from the tandems. I sitfly with them, and as they open, i lay out flat on my back and spend the time they are opening backtracking away. Especially with the snivelly tandem canopies, this can be a good amount of time (I already know that I am not long when I exit, and therefore able to bring it down pretty low ..2500') so it is often about 15 or more seconds, which gives me a lot of separation. I like being able to see them open fully then I flip over, chances are they wont be cutting away, but if they do I am far enough away. jeff D-16906 -
Yeah, I would love to hear more about that. any info appreciated. jeff D-16906

I believe that Tony Hathaway is using the 14n. Henny Wiggers was also using one. Mike MCgowan was at one time, don't know if he still is... it was in THIS thread. jeff D-16906
