  1. There is a big difference! I am no authority by any means, but i have flown several zp & F1-11 canopies. My current canopy is an Aged F1-11, which only magnifies the differences in my mind. For starters, a ZP canopy will generally not degrade it's porosity (amount of air it passes thru) over time. Just last weekend, i saw a Sabre2 with over 2,000 jumps on it, and with new lines it flew like it was brand new. As for F1-11, after about 200 terminal openings, a canopy pilot will begin to notice the performance degrading. The porosity issue also influences how an canopy lands. ZP canopies will have a considerably more amount of flare behind them, making them slightly easier to land. This past weekend i had the opportunity to demo a Sabre2 170, and at 1/3 brakes, the canopy leveled out. In comparison, my current F1-11 canopy needs to be punched to full brakes to even come close, and i must set up my final approach around 300 feet, & make almost no minor corrections to build up enough airspeed to have a respectable flare. Quite frusterating. It's almost like comparing apples to oranges. Up in the air, they have different flight characteristics which all comes down to personal preference. On the plus side, F1-11 is very easy to pack, and has a slightly smaller pack volume. This is my general opinion. If anybody has corrections or more to add, please be my guest. best regards, shaun smith =========Shaun ==========
  2. Hey, Who watched fox last night when they had "sports collisions 2" Had some grizzly skydiving footage, one guy diving headfirst into a swoop pond, one guy they kept showing like 30 time went straight into a chain link fence, and some footage of landing an unconcious skydiver. Is this good publicity for our sport? Opinions..... sds =========Shaun ==========
  3. WHATTT? No Catholic Jokes?? I'm not catholic, but i'm certainly not offended!!!! COME ON!!!! sds =========Shaun ==========
  4. I'll be fair, I've lived in a couple other places, and I think Kansas Is WAAY cool. Guess each place has it's ups n downs. sds =========Shaun ==========
  5. Dang, It really bothers me when i hear about people walking into propellers. It happens occasionally, i know, but it just blows my mind. How could someone not know that there is a propeller there?? I know they are hard to see when spinning, but for heaven's sake, these people should be weeded out of the gene pool. If the dude was exiting after an observer ride, he approached the propeller from behind. Didn't the prop blast or exhaust or presence of an engine tune him in. some people, i swear............ sds =========Shaun ==========

  8. Mad props to the Skydive Wichita Staff for putting on such an awsome boogie! I had a blast, and the chopper jumps were by far the coolest skydives i've made yet!!! sds =========Shaun ==========

    Tacos

Pink Taco!! I remember three years ago my Junior year of High School, one of the Basketball teams was sponsored by the local Taco Hutt. their slogan pasted on the back of their jersies read "Come Help Us Eat Pink Taco" I still have one of those shirts. I should wear it to the DZ. sds =========Shaun ==========
  11. I want to be a wuss. In this sport, it's the wuss that jumps for 20 years. sds =========Shaun ==========
  12. It sounds to me like my Tempo 150 will be ableto physically withstand me deploying the thing at terminal. Coma but however, as I become more proficient in a sit or other freeflying positions, I know I run the risk of a premature reserve deployment. My rig is freefly friendly (99 Dolphin with all mods, Full bridle protection, over-the-shoulder tuck tabs) Will a PD hold up any better in this situation than a Tempo? For this setting, is it also a better idea to keep a big fluffy reserve? As soon as i pay off my current parachute loan, I'll buy a new rig. Let me assure everybody that I will definatly not skimp on this one. This sport is real, the fear keeps it that way. sds =========Shaun ==========
  13. Don't give me too much credit, I still don't know what I'm going to do. sds =========Shaun ==========
  14. Not much. Some guys in Eloy decided it would be cool (probably drunk skydiver talk) to drop a giamungus rubberband ball from the back of a Casa or Skyvan. thats about it. sds =========Shaun ==========
  15. Now I'm just in the Delima(sp?) i feared. I honestly know i need a larger reserve, but even with trade-in it will be about a month until i can get the $ for a tempo 170. Boogie this weekend, i'll think it over, but i may end up on rental gear. THis is all about how much risk a person is willing to assume. I just need to sit down and think this one out. Thanks for all your help everybody, it was invaluable. Best regards to all, shaun smith =========Shaun ==========
  16. I play for a String Ensemble at weddings almost every weekend, and more than several times i've shown up to the DZ with a Tux in the back seat. Don't tell people about it. Keep your mouth shut. They'll just want you to jump it. They are VEEERRRRY expensive. I have jumped in shorts and black socks! That, is way cool!!! sds =========Shaun ==========
  17. I would like to confirm the retardedness of that episode. It's an old rerun, and it was in a forum a while ago. 80% rubber band ball, 5% 300 way, 15% of the host talking but saying nothing. Nothing better to do Wednesday evening, I'll watch it. sds =========Shaun ==========
  18. Mondays are totally gay. Today was the first day for summer semester. My math professor didn't feel like showing up, so everyone sat around looking stupid waiting for like an hour. Ya know what we need. Monday jumps. Every monday. that would fix this gay monday problem. sds =========Shaun ==========
  19. I've jumped a total of 5 canopies. three of which were 7cells. I am familiar with how the 7cell behaves in comparison to the 9cell, but i have never jumped a 7cell (F1-11) at 150 ft^2. This also makes me very uncomfortable. However, my next canopy which i will move to sometime this fall will be a 150^2" The general agreement of people i have asked so far are somewhere in the area of "If you do have a reserve ride, you will be very gratefull to have anything above your head." Somehow i don't buy that. Here in Kansas, the Entire State is a Landing area. Where i Jump, the nearest tree (note that tree is NOT plural) is literally just over a mile away. Nearest powerlines are about 5/6 of a mile, and nearest body of water is the sandy Kansas River which is only a couple of feet deep. If you want flat, we got flat. I feel pretty sure that in the event of a reserve ride, i can steer this thing somewhere landable. If anybody has any advise, keep it comming! I've learned more in this thread about reserves than in my entire skydiving career! sds =========Shaun ==========
  20. This is what i need to know here. Lots of people i know overload their max suspended weights, and if i am going to be one of those i need to step up and understand everything i am doing here. I guess what I should be asking aside from policy is "Is this unsafe in the event that i do need to go to plan B" If the reserve is tested and proven to work above the recommended, then I would assume (bad word choice) so. However, if that Recommended weight is set for more structural purposes, I need to sell it fast and invest in a new reserve. anybody have additional comments? sds edited to add: If it comes to as issue of maximizing glide ratio and flare power, all i am interested in during a reserve ride is A)Not dying and B) old schoold 5-point PLF =========Shaun ==========
  21. This has been bugging me for quite some time. Help me out here guys.... I am currently jumping my first rig, which i've put around 70 jumps on so far. The reserve which came with the container is a Temp150, has a max recommended suspended weight of 165. It is a new reserve, about a year old w/ no rides. I myslef, fully geared up, am closer to 180. People who i talk to have agreed that it really isn't a problem, but I know that the 165 pound weight limit means something. What are the risks that I am assuming when i jump with this reserve? Am I an added liability to the DZ? What are some problems that i can run into with this? Any advice that can be offered would be greatly appreciated. Blue Skyz, sds Edited to add: Is this thing TSO for higher? Why have a different TSO than a recommended suspended weight? WhatsUP???!?!?!!? =========Shaun ==========
  22. This was one crazy ass weekend. Did 12 jumps, 11 from Mullins Super Kingair and one from a chopper. Summer is here, baby!! sds
