Yes they could have as they have several systems available to them including HF, VHF (emergency channel monitored by about everyone) and SATCOM. Clearly they were within communications range as their FANS and ACARS were being received. As for being a priority, I don't buy it. They are quite capable of flying and talking at the same time. Look at the flight that went into the Hudson, the captain was in command and made several communications all within the 30 seconds or so that he had and that was only from 4,000'. I'm glad you don't buy it. There's not a lot of facts to sell here. The pilot that went into the Hudson still had a controllable airplane. Who knows what happened to these guys.

Technically you could call a malfunction anything that is not a "normal" opening. On student canopies a brake fire can be a surprise inconvenience, but on a HP canopy a brake fire could quickly become an unrecoverable spin. I guess you could call a malfunction anything that you have to fix to have a safely landable canopy. I.e: if I look up and wonder if I should land it, or if it's gonna keep flying right, then I call that a mal.

Home now, and a little bit sunburnt. This was our annual resident retreat. The graduating seniors this year said screw it, rented a boat, and drank beer all day on the lake.
