Let me guess...you skimmed. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

I think I've made that clear. I don't have a "position". I have feelings and thoughts. I'm not an expert. I only know what I 'know'. I'm not a fact stater or bible thumper or paint thrower. I'm not perfect or pure or 'enlightened'. I hope I do change people in that they at least think about the subject. Whatever you do with your life, you live with. I believe when you know something to be wrong (whatever that is) - when you really know it down deep - you owe it to yourself to do something. However small. I'd wager you'd agree with that.
-
Bears repeating. If you believe your dog loves you, the idea one shouldn't attribute 'human' aspects to animals is ridiculous. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

You're just plain wrong. There is more to life than big sweeping change, radical overhauls and paradigm shifts. Life is subtle and long-lasting. Every single thing you and I do has an effect. I'm sorry you feel so insignificant but you're not. The power of a small act is overlooked only by those who choose not to see it. And the smallest acts of kindness are usually the ones with the greatest impact. I'm not trying to change you. I don't know you. Are YOU trying to change MY mind? If not, what are you all so upset about? I'll listen to any point anyone has to make except for "tastes great" and "I don't care". Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Thank you BILL!! Innaccuracies and misleading facts are rampant in the meat and dairy marketing. Fireflyer, we are only humans. Not one of us is omniscient or perfect in our actions. No one here yet has claimed to be morally (or in any way) superior. The challenge to vegans regarding leather is a common one. But really a moot point. What you're essentially asking is "why aren't you PERFECT in your beliefs?" Well, I would challenge you that no one is. (Do you really think that someone who has thought long and hard about these issues, altered their entire way of eating is being enlightened by your question? Gee, I never thought leather came from animals!) I don't use the word vegan like some kind of badge or symbol of purity. Personally, I don't really like it. It puts people on the defensive and frankly, it sounds self-righteous. But again, it's a commonly understood and recognizable term - easiest when describing my diet. We're all different. We all have our battles to fight, our beliefs to uphold. Thankfully we all don't have the same ones or we'd never learn from each other. No progress would ever be made in other areas. I choose this not only because I believe something in our society has gone awry that we turn our heads to the destruction of the earth but also to the torture of animals. And that makes me sad - and want to do something about it. Making a decision to not financially support the meat and dairy industry is my stand. That will always lead to discussion - generally of the "you're some kind of hippy radical" nature, but hey, those who aren't open to thoughtful discussion will probably never change their minds anyway. If I raged against everything I thought unjust in the world - I wouldn't live a productive life. That's not me. There are those who can. Those who alter their entire lives and even being for their cause. I applaud them in following their hearts. And thank them for their accomplishments. No matter how small or big your effort - we all know that change will not come in our lifetime. A small, measured, steady effort will change things over time. I'm just doing my little part. I didn't mean to say that herbivores are more evolved. I meant to say that we as humans have evolved. We now have the capacity to understand things beyond the basic hunger, fear, fatigue, etc. All this talking about 'food chain' makes me wonder why we haven't come up with a more relevant argument. Thanks for reading with an open mind. And I agree that any human announcing moral superiority is useless. None of us is 'better' than the other, we just 'know' different things.
-
You sound sweet. Anyway, I've seriously considered both sides of the argument and this is the choice I make. We each have to live with our own choices and pick what 'battles' are most important to us. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Do you have any idea how much more food would be available if we stopped feeding our grain to cattle? For every 7 pounds of grain we feed to a cow, we yield less than 1 pound of meat. Not a very strong return on our crop. Doesn't sound like a system based on feeding the most people. I don't know who your God is but I hope he's dismayed at the merciless treatment of production livestock. Does being 'given dominion' over animals switch off any sense of responsibility toward fellow man, the longevity of our land and ecosystems, and ultimately your compassion to the suffering of creatures that share your life? I hope he's looking down and thinking that he created us in his image - full of love and mercy - and wondering once again what went wrong. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

I'm not a Christian. My reference to 'GOD' was in a higher power, general sense. I tried to use terms that had a commonly understood meaning. My feelings on this issue are personal and not based on any sort of religion. If I had the ability to stop the practice of corporate farming - I would. I would make it so every single meat eater had to hunt and kill his own food. If then, you still choose to eat meat, I might not agree but I would respect your choice. I did read what you posted and, as with many biblical references, found that it could be used to support either side of the discussion. I'll say again, It's not about what's 'rightfully' ours to take. It's about how we take it. And what we nurture and what we destroy as a result. All this talk about our "rights" and our place in the food chain. None of us has to fight for our food anymore. We've evolved. But we're still citing neanderthal practices as our reasons. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

The food chain argument is an old (silly) one. No other species systematically confines, tortures and mechanically executes thousands of animals daily. It IS a killing machine - it is NOT out of necessity. The food chain is the NATURAL order of dominion - factory farms ARE NOT natural. Vanity, gluttony and greed are the only reasons we continue to eat meat as a species. We have the ability to evolve beyond the 'desire' to eat meat. Just because we CAN eat meat, doesn't mean we should. In fact, once we realize we have such GOD-like power over animals - doesn't it require that we offer GOD-like care and mercy? It's not about what's 'rightfully' ours to take. It's about how we take it. And what we nurture and what we destroy as a result. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

Well, there's my story. I bartended in college at a venue called the Metro, in Richmond, VA. Which happened to be across the alley from GWAR's slavepit. Served Black Label and PBR to them nightly (and morningly). Beefcake and Brockie (Oderus) were nice drunks. Sleazy P Martini married my friend Heather. And Danielle, Slymenstra Hymen, made a skydive in SA for a NIKE ad. Not my kind of music, not my style of show - but always entertaining. But, I HATED bartending for their 'all-ages' shows! Nothing but sweaty, fake-blood covered 13 year olds asking for water!!! I'm not ashamed to admit I started charging for it. for reference: Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

I think "good/great" is a relative term. There are lots of good/great freeflyers here. Whatever your project is - it might require a certain type of experience or a broader perspective that those flyers may or may not have. I guess what I'm saying is, more info on the type of project is needed!

I'm glad it's makin' the rounds, too! It's the perfect little 'happy quote'

Very interesting read. Especially if it's read all the way through. Although I'm not a fashionista - I'm an advertising art director. (I personally have no political comment on that article.) Anyhooo... For those interested in real skydivers in fashion ads, I found a few of the ones I previously mentioned. They were for Max, Italy 1997. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
