the weird thing is, all the picture of Santa's I've seen out here in Bombay show him to be caucasian (and yes, I work for a captive offshored call centre and will have to use this as my e-card to everyone for Christmas

What can you do with two lighters you can't do with one?
skytash replied to skytash's topic in The Bonfire
The other day a kind security guy at the airport asked me give him one of the lighters I had in my carry-on bag. Apparently you are allowed to take one on board, but not two. I've been racking my brains about this, and thought people here could help. What damage can be done by two lighters that can't be done with one????? tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe -
I find these responses quite interesting. I have a belly button ring. In most western airports, where you just walk through a gate I've never had a problem. Flying in India, they use a wand to scan you and the ring set the wand off. The lady waved it around my belly a couple of times and it squealed, so I lifted up my top and showed her the ring. She immediately smiled, and hopefully it made her day! btw - only chicks get scanned by women, the guys get scanned by guys, so you would need to show off your PA to a bloke in that situation. However, I would have thought that button fly jeans would have the same effect on the wand, so you may want to wear them if flying in India with a PA tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I watched my god-daughter's birth. Her dad was propping up her mum, so the midwife asked me to put her in the crib while she made sure that mum was alright. I couldn't believe that she already had wrinkles on her knuckles. It makes sense that she did otherwise she wouldn't have been able to make fist, but it did surprise me at the time! To this day her dad is jealous that I got to hold her first! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

USPA SIM....BPA equivalent?
skytash replied to GeordieSkydiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's called the Ops Manual and you can download it from the BPA web site at www.bpa.org.uk I admit I haven't read it in a while so I can't say how similar it is to the SIM, but it does contain all the rules and regulations for the UK. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Trying different dropzones UK
skytash replied to julesshrew's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That is one of the things that annoys me about British jumpers. Everyone complains about the BPA council members not taking the other members seriously but we can't even find more than 15 people prepared to join concil. Although there are things I would like to see changed in how the BPA is run, I don't have the time to devote to be on council and actually do anything about it, so I keep my mouth shut. I have been to a couple of council meetings as an observer and would say that a fair amount of effort and thought is put into the things being discussed and decided there. Until I am actually prepared to DO something about how the BPA is run I won't criticise the council. Also, bear in mind that the work the BPA has to do with the CAA etc is similar to that of the USPA and they have to spread their costs between far fewer members, so the cost per member is invariably going to be higher. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. If you already have a suit you are replacing, it may be worth taking it along with you for comparison on bootie size as well. I found that the descriptions aren't that indicative of the size of the booties. To jump in the last suit I ordered I need to wear 4 lbs of lead to have the same range as in my previous suit as the booties are so much bigger. Unfortunately I can't remember what the booties I have were called . The advantage of going there and showing them things is that they can actually do most things (like kallend's foot measurements) which is why I like ordering from a manufacturer where I actually go to the factory rather than just speaking to a dealer with jumpsuits. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I know this is some time off, but I should just get back to Europe in time for this time of your from my stint in India (with no jumping ) Is there a good boogie somewhere in Europe or the US over Mardis Gras which has lots of flat flying at all levels? I need to get my knees in the breeze again and want to plan the trip now to have something to look forward to (and get tickets before it gets to close and expensive!) tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I wouldn't get into debt to learn, you'll end up having to spend more money once you have your A-licence to pay for gear etc. I would say you are better off working as hard as you can over the holidays and saving up enough money to get through everything in the spring and having some money for a deposit at least on gear, even if you end up having to borrow to buy it all (and get second hand gear when you do buy - it's cheaper and if in good condition per a trusted rigger just as good as new stuff to start off with) tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I'll wait for a physics professor to correct me on this, but I think all rainbows are always double rainbows, with the colours in opposite directions, it just depends on your angle to the rain fall and sunshine as to whether you can see them. Also, I think they are all perfectly round really (like the ones you can see on the top of clouds as you are about to fall through them, not that I would do that in the UK or the US, only in France!) tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Favorite place to exit from the plane
skytash replied to piisfish's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My least favourite slot - what if the rest don't follow??? Fortunately only one person can do it and enough others want to for me not to have to worry about floating out of a tailgate.... My favourite - diving, that way I can see where I'm going, and now that I'm less scared of it, floating out of a side door for similar reasons. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe -
Breath deeply and concentrate on what you are supposed to be doing. I used to have door fear on side doors until I started forcing myself to be first out and sit by the door, I then started forcing myself to float. Side doors aren't a problem anymore, but you can have a good laugh at the way I cling to the plane on a tailgate as soon as it opens. One of my worst door fear things happened this summer when I had to open the tailgate . By visualising what I am to do in the door (be is spotting or climbing out) I can keep my mind off it a bit, but it does get the adrenaline pumping like mad. I take it as a healthy response to doing something that humans aren't really supposed to be doing and use it to help me perform better. Spending time by the door, concentrating on what you are supposed to be doing and visualising that all the way up will help, but ultimately you will need to have a go and realise that you won't fall off. Even if you are gripping the door making your knuckles go white (mine do whenever I'm spotting!) you'll start getting used to it. Just keep trying! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

Does the Sabre 2 (NOT SABRE 1) have a safety problem on openings?
skytash replied to tdog's topic in Safety and Training
I own a Sabre 2. Mine opens softly enough, but frequently has end cell closure which mostly is both end cells but at times is only one or the other (no real pattern) giving me off-heading openings. So although I voted soft and stable openings, they can be off heading which I don't think of as stable. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. I've had two Aircare suits, after which I went for Tony suits. I would say you get what you pay for with an Aircare suit - they are cheaper but don't last as long as some others. I get Tony suits now because I spend a lot of time at Z-hills and get Tony to measure me there, and any changes can be done on the spot if mistakes do happen. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. everyone will tell you their DZ is best. You are better off looking in the Dropzones section here and reading the reviews people have written, it will give you an idea of the types of jumping there is at each one. Some are more FS oriented, others more FF, another has lots of birdmen (not really that applicable if you have only just qualified). Also, think about where they are, although I know people from London who go to Nethers, Langar, Hibalstow, Weston, Hinton and Headcorn - so it all depends on how far you want to drive! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Skyventure UK - tunnel on order!
skytash replied to skytash's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm so excited!!! From http://www.skyventure.co.uk/skyventure.html?/latest_information.html "WE ARE THERE!!! Enough money now raised Tunnel being ordered next week Watch this space Thanks to all supporters" From an e-mail from Simon Ward: [snip boring investor stuff] I am particularly keen to increase our Founder Members Club and skydiver investor base. In our view, the more skydivers involved the better; Skydivers will make up a large part of the business, they will promote their company to other skydivers, it gives the UK skydiver membership a very good opportunity to increase their skills level in preparation for national and international competition and it gives us a tremendous opportunity to attract more people into Skydiving in the UK, which in turn helps our business at SkyVenture. During this week, we shall be ordering our new wind tunnel. As always, thank you for your support and I will be in contact to advise you of progress on a regular basis.
