I'm coming over to Z-hills for 2 months (Yeah!) in November & December and would like to have a car while I'm there. I've checked out car rental places, and many of the big companies don't rent cars out for that length of time and even if I split it into two rental it comes to around $1,000. I would be happy to buy a crappy old car for the two months if it comes in cheaper once insurance and everything is covered. Does anyone in the Z-hills area know of any cheap old battered cars or second hand dealers or even local car rental places where I wouldn't have to pay airport surcharges etc? I can't seem to find anything useful on the net, so any help would be appreciated. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

Before I even read your post (which I now have of course) I knew what my answer to the question would - not. It's like the question 'do I love him/her?' If you are not 100% sure your answer is yes, then it is no. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

There have been a few useful articles both in Parachutist and in Skydive, The Mag (UK mag) on big-way stuff. I don't know whether the Parachutist has an on-line version, but you can find Skydive, The Mag at: http://www.skydivemag.com/ In the June 2003 issue there is an articleon big-ways (that admittedly I wrote ) and there are links at the bottom of the article to other related articles in other editions of the mag. The most important thing - don't get noticed by the organiser in the air. If they don't point you out during the debrief, you haven't done anything wrong and are less likely to get axed! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. My understanding was that the 4th language, Romansch is not related to any of the other three languages and varies quite distinctly by Kanton. Swiss German looks the same as German German just sounds very very different (can be mistaken for Dutch, even by those of us who speak it) which some people think is a different language from German. It isn't, it's just pronounced differently. Happy to stand corrected on my understanding of Romansch by a Swiss person here. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. which VW Ghia? They built a number of different cars at their Ghia plant (which now belongs to Ford hence the Mondeo Ghia, not the same at ALL!). I like the Karman 314 and 214 preferring the 214 but they didn't build many of them so they are in very short supply even in Germany. My fave current car has to be my very own Meg, an MGF, I can fit in a rig and a bloke but not a bloke and two rigs - any potential male in my life either mustn't jump , or needs his own car... tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I voted yes, but not for the money, because if a couple is prepared to spend that kind of money on fulfilling their (presumably!) unfulfilled dream of parenthood and I know that they will love and care for the child and I was able to help them with this, I would. I admit I would only do so if the circumstance were right both in terms of the adoptive parents and my own. I would prefer they donated the $10,000 to a charity which helps homeless/abused children than take it myself. I know there is a bond which develops during pregancy, I've seen it happen. I also think that if you know in advance who will be loving and caring for the child for the rest of its live and it isn't you, that will affect the bond - I have seen something similar to that: a friend who until 10 days after her child was born referred to it as 'the neo-nate'. She commented during the pregnancy that she was glad I was around, because at least someone would feel maternal about her neo-nate. Throughout the whole pregnancy she felt that it was like a parasite and was not joyful about it at all. Her partner on the other hand would 'count' with the baby, tapping on the belly and waiting for the same number of kicks to come back! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Between you and your instructor there was enough control for you to both survive - although you want to learn and improve, this is still the first requirement and it was met. You also seem to have a reasonable idea as to what the causes of your problems were, so they can be prevented next time

Yesterday my kind local BMI, known here as cpoxon took me for my first BM jump - I absolutely loved it We jumped from the Skyvan over for the Langar Boogie2 and the pilot increased the run-in speed after everyone else had left so cpoxon had some fun with the plane and didn't just have to try and stay slow enough to keep up with me in a Classic. I will definitely have to do more of these and may spend the money I was saving up for a new (smaller) canopy on a BM suit instead and stick with the canopy I have, who needs to down-size anyway! tash PS: the Ladybird thing came up while we were waiting to emplane, was I a 'bird-bird', a 'chick-bird', a 'bird-woman', a 'bird-chick' etc and I liked the Ladybird best (despite not really being a lady) and I am already thinking of which rig would look best with a Ladybird design and would they put little black spots on the wings of the suit I end up buying?? Not sure that's such a good idea unless you can prevent whuffos from looking at it. It could put off potential students or lead to sensationalism by whuffo journalists in the area. That's what encouraged HH to change the viewing options on the incidents forum here. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

I guess it could be related to the fact that a lot of gear is custom built, so its re-sale value is automatically significantly lower than its value new to the orderer. This means that if you default on your payments it would be harder for them to get their money back by repo'ing the rig and selling it again. I know that for my car I had something called 'gap insurance' with my finance package which covered the gap between the amount my normal insurance would pay out in the case of a write-off and the amount I owed the finance company. Another thing is the amount of rigs sold. Although individual rigs are expensive for us jumpers, for a finance company they are very small beer. The stuff you can buy on finance on the telly sells in far higher volumes which means that even if the finance company doesn't make much money on each deal, there are enough deals to still make a profit. The finance companies probably don't consider the volume of sales from an individual dealer high enough. Now if there was a chain of dealerships around the world (or more sensible - a co-operative, hey, dealers this could be a viable idea!) they may have enough volume to make it worth the while for a finance company. Oh yes and us pencil pushing finance types also worry that you may die the first time you use it and not have life insurance to cover any debts you may have tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I'm bad at golf - fortunately someone came up with the idea of jumping from planes. Airfields are a far better use of lots of land than golf courses... tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

haven't jumped from a 182, but did a 4-way tracking dive from a 206 recently - took off with an open door and as I was watching the ground disappear below us I was thinking - this is so beautiful and I rarely get to see it like this from the Caravan or Let... tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I think something like this would be a good idea. A good friend of mine had an accident and said that for the first 2 weeks lots of people sent cards and flowers etc to him, but it all dropped off after that. We had got into a habit of a 'Monday night phone call' where I would fill him in on what had been going on at the dz, general gossip etc and was amazed that so many 'friends' appeared to have not continued to keep in touch. For a student, who may not know that many people on a DZ it could be even worse as they don't even get the flower/cards etc in the first 2 weeks! Would be very interested to hear about DZs that do something in this situation and what it is. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

Does skydiving make you tired?
skytash replied to BoogieBob's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When we were trying for the UK women's record we had oxygen on the plane. We weren't going much higher than usual but due to formation flights the flight did take a little longer. I found that I was far less tired after 5 jumps with oxygen than I am usually after 5 jumps without. I assumed as a result of this experience that going up to 13 grand a few times a day is what tires my body - having to spend time operating with less oxygen input, sort of agreeing with what your father was saying. Also, until I was a RAPS student at a windy dropzone I never knew how tiring sitting around doing nothing is tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. I'm not a vegetarian, but don't eat meat that often. I heard a great radio programme this afternoon with a French chef and have been craving pate since then, now this thread - the cravings are getting worse, I'll have to go shopping! On the BBQ front - I LOVE BBQ'd corn on the cob and always have at least one to go with the meat! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

well done - shame I couldn't be there, and I missed the BritChicks too I love bigways out of skyvans but had to finish my dissertation at the weekend - now printed and handed in, so: Langar Boogie here I come (well, tomorrow!) to go play with a skyvan tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. if you look on uk.rec.skydiving, there is a list there (posted by Gary McGuiness I think) of UK insurers. I have the annual Axa policy, around £95 including medical cover for skydiving. Scubadiving beyond a certain depth is not included, so if you do that too, it's worth looking at the small print. BPA 3rd party insurance covers everywhere in the world apart from US and Canada if I remember correctly. They were helpful with providing evidence of the insurance cover when I was jumping in Germany as there you just need some form of insurance cover and don't need to be a member of the national parachute association, although they get it cheaper through bulk buying. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion.
