  1. A few links you might find illuminating - Here's what PD says about the Spectre. Note the maximum suggested exit weight for a novice on a 135 (you would agree that 30 jumps is novice, yes?). This page has links to a number of articles. Specifically, read the articles entitled "Choosing the right canopy" by Scott Miller and "Wingloading and it's effects" by John LeBlanc. Also, check out the chart that Brian Germain posted on the first post in this thread. Scott, John and Brian each probably have more jumps and almost certainly have far more knowledge about canopies and how they fly than you, me and everybody you know and trust at your dz combined. Of course, you have to choose who you want to listen to and/or believe. Personally, I'd choose to listen to people who are involved in canopy design and canopy control education on a daily basis... people like Scott, John and Brian...

  3. We went to WalMart. Then we came back and installed a USB 2.0 card. Then we watched the final episode of Hell's Kitchen. Then we... nevermind.
  4. The two 40 gig HD's on the 'puter ain't enough anymore. It's time for more storage space. As much as I don't want another box cluttering up the 'puter area, we're considering an external drive instead of replacing one of the internal ones. But before we do anything, a few questions for all the geeks out there... If it matters, we're running XP. Firewire and USB 2.0 cards are installed. A good sized chunk of the new drive will be used for video files, both for watching and for editing. Will there be any issues using an external for this? Are there any particular specs we need to be sure the new drive has? I'm assuming it will be a simple drag/drop operation to move things from the internal drive to an external drive. If we decide to go with a new internal drive, is it possible to move what's on the current internal drive into the new one without having to back it all up on removable media? Thanks
  5. I'd be there if you were 1) serving pizza instead of burgers and 2) would let me wash all my clothes instead of just my socks.
  6. Do not get Directway. It sucks ass, and the customer "support" is even worse than the service.
  7. This article may be helpful.
  8. We're gonna hafta talk - I'm going for both history and cultural anthropology degrees.
  9. It's not a personal attack if it's true.

    Saab Owners?

Get a Toyota or a Honda. Yeah, I know, everybody has one, but there's good reason for that. Both makes are very reliable and not nearly as expensive to maintain or repair as the European imports are.
  11. I have a choice? You're so nice to me!
  12. Oh, cool! My school offers ASL and it can be used as the foriegn language requirement for graduation and to get into a UC (University of California). I'm debating whether that or Spanish would be more useful; if I ever get the AFF rating I think ASL might come in handy.
  13. If you'd have bothered to show up at LP you could've learned first hand. btw, I drank your beer. Gia, can I have some fudge?
  14. 2:1:0 Two Cool Whip facials applied to deserving jumpers - Congrats to Dean for 6000 and Charlie for 100. Yet another fun 2 way with my favorite 2 way partner.
  15. I'm taking 17 units for fall semester... Intro Sociology US Gov't US History (the first half) Cultural Anthropology Elementary Algebra (i.e. the same one I took as a freshman in high school ) Three weeks til the semester starts! Woo hoo!
  16. Happy happy birthday Now eat your fucking cake. Happy happy birthday Or we'll punch you in the face.
  17. Um Steve? It really worries me that you think about my b/f when you do that. Stop it. He's mine.
  18. You have to have money to have a bank account.
  19. Yeah, it can be. Very. Upsize now before you hurt yourself.
  20. Learn to pack. People will pay you. Buy a tent. It's crazy to drive that far if you aren't going for at least two days. Sell everything you own that you don't absolutely need for survival. Welcome to the (extremely dysfunctional) family. Watch out for Uncle Bob.
  21. I've never worked in container manufacturing, so I don't know how they figure it out. I only know how I figured out roughly what size MLW would fit customers when I was selling used gear over the phone and/or internet. The formula I gave above works great for getting a rough idea of what size MLW will fit someone. Doesn't work exactly for every body shape or every container manufacturer and it doesn't take leg strap or lateral length into account. But it's a good starting point for those looking for used rigs.
  22. I felt the same way when I was flat on my back before and after having three vertebrae fused five years ago. All I could think about was how much it sucked and how I wished I could go back and change it. I can't say it made me a better person but it did change me. Since recovering, I've gone on numerous road trips around the US (both solo and with friends), taken huge scary risks (like quitting my good job with nothing lined up to replace it, moving from California to Florida to run a gear store and moving back to California with no job lined up when I got back), and seen and experienced things that I never would have had I stayed where I was. I learned that you can't count on being able to do the things you want to do in the future so you might as well do them now. Yeah, the whole back surgery thing sucked while it was happening, but looking back now I wouldn't change it.
  23. I'd have taken the laptop with me and put the boxes of framed pictures up on the shelf in the closet instead of leaving them on the floor when Hurricane Jeanne was on her way to visit my house. I also would have asked Mom to make a quilt out of all those skydiving tshirts instead of taking them to Florida when I moved there. Other than that, I'd change nothing.
  24. The 18 refers to the main lift web measurement (MLW). Take your height in inches, subtract your inseam (crotch to floor) in inches, subtract 20. The result will be what MLW Javelin will likely fit you. Example - I'm 5'8" (68") with a 33" inseam. 68-33-20=15 - a 15" MLW should (and does) fit me.
