  1. Ok lets see. In America you sign all your rights away so you cant sue anyone. In England you are not allowed to make someone sign away their rights to sue for negligent acts which cause personal injury or death, (S2(1) Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977). DZs get a lot of protection from what waivers they are allowed to use and the Latin maxim "volenti non fit injuria" or you "voluntarily accept the risk of injury". This doesn’t help though if they are negligent. The simple answer is you can sue whoever is negligent. If that means the rigger for screwing up your pack job then you sue him. If he's employed by the DZ, you can sue them for employing someone who screws up pack jobs. Negligence is basically breaking a "duty of care" - in this case a rigger has a duty to take a very great ammount of care in packing your reserve. All you gotta do then is prove on the balance of probabilities (51% or more) that it was his screw up that caused the accident - see other posts above. There is a reported case of a DZ in the UK packing an old main into the reserve on a tandem. (rules changed because of this and that’s now no longer allowed. An ex army parachute display team member, training to be a tandem master had to use it and blew out the end cells on deployment, initiating a turn until impact. It was found that the DZ were negligent in using it as a reserve and negligent in not fitting reinforcing tape to it. He sued and got £954,592 for his injuries a few years back. Answer is - so long as you can prove negligence then you can sue. If you ask me this is a lot better than the US system as DZ's are protected from the accidents that are just "shit happens" and yet can be punnished if they just plain "F**k up". Now where do I send my bill?
  2. "bounce" dreams are odd. I had one last week where I got low and went straight for the reserve handle (nice to know I can do the right thing even in a dream) funny cos I had a really long reserve cable too and had to pull it a long way before it fired. I hit hard on line strech but was fine and just got up and walked about. I was embarrased cos I was dumb enough to have gone low. Another guy had done exactly the same as me on the same load and hit on line streach and had hurt himself, but was just sorta hopping round rubbing his ass where it hurt - really odd. Had another one a few months ago where I had double total or something and hit at terminal. Then the really odd thing was that I could still see people wandering arround me even though I had hit. It was like one of those computer first person shoot-em-ups where you can still see the baddies walking arround after your dead if you dont hit restart. Guess its just our heads dealing with this dumb shit we do.
  3. its not bare - it has plenty of stuff growing in it
  4. I dont understand why people who get sponsorship cant show a little gratitude and give a little back. My skydiving club gets some money from the pub we hold our meetings in. Its not a great deal but it helps with our events. We give back as much as we can, we promote the pub, hell we spend hundreds there. We even flew their flag into the demo we did last year. If you get, you give, right? Im even happy to promote companies who have been good to me through excellent customer service or whatever. I make sure I review on here any product I buy and if somethings good I say so. It shouldnt just be about sponsorship, its about passing on knowlegde - thats what so much of this sport is based on. If you find a good product tell people so they can get a bit of a good thing too.
  5. Im 23 and think she's hot
  6. The web site has been down for weeks. When I e-mailed I was told it would be back up again within the week but that was 2-3 weeks ago and still no site. Their e-mail is priestc001@hawaii.rr.com and they do respond to you after a while. Hope that helps.
  7. You KNOW I did Dave, you were in on my Cat 10 dive! Shame your not gonna be at the pub on thursday to get beer. Will have to beer you next time I see you.
  8. I have one of these and they are very good. It will be interesting to see what the Benchmade 5 is like though and I'll probably start wearing one of those as my seccond knife. Your drill should be - if you have a problem with the lines on your main - chop it and get under your reserve. If you have a problem with the reserve. Look for the line thats causing it and start cutting the problem ones, working from the inner most to the outer most. If you do it the other way round you can quickly end up with a very small reserve. This might not apply when wearing camera - eg there are issues with cutting away if you have lines hung up on your helmet. I dont so dont ask me.
  9. simply get a full face then and pop the visor up as soon as your under canopy.
  10. thanks, thought that might be a risk - hence trying to check it out first
  11. Just remember to take it off on arrival !! There was a posting a couple of months ago about some guy realising after his jump that it was still tied on.
  12. Step 1: Take 1 pull up cord Step 2: Tie the handle tightly to the harness Step 3: Drink beer
  13. never done it, but im told harder - you have no air flow to work with so stability is an arse. Guess its just something to learn though so in the end its neither harder nor easier, just different.
  14. 23 tomorrow!!! will be doing a reccord attempt Big way on it too so should be memorable - wohoo
  15. Thats one of the reasons why I suggest a symbi suit - they are by far and away the most popular suit over here in England. They are very tough and a superb design. Good point there - guess we brits tend not to worry about this cos we have to import so much of our gear we are just used to the fact the supplier is gonna be a long way away. That said, I would be amazed if you ever had a problem with symbi. But do what you want.....You will anyway. ***
  16. No I dont mean the design - I mean if that specific canopy was defectively made in some way. If the design was simply bad there would be no cause of action, but if that one canopy was bad and all the others are good, then you (I assume its your canopy) should get compensation. As for why a canopy would have an inconsistent flare, I don't know. Guess if the canopy was made wrong then anything could be happening. Still its hard to imagine why it would only happen sometimes and not others, especially the pilot is doing everything the same.
  17. If the canopy genuinely was manufactured incorrectly you ought to contact Icarus for some money back. Try an get as much info off the guy you sold it too first though as they may have admitted that it was screwy in a letter to him or something. I'm loathed to say it cos I want to keep law as far away from skydiving as possible, but if you buy a defective product you should be compensated. In any other market you wouldn’t hesitate on asking for some compensation - imagine if your new car had dodgy breaks that slammed you into a wall every now and again.
  18. (copy) go to symbiosis suits - they are without a doubt the best RW suits on the market. They have a very cool designer too and come in at about £130 basic with loads of options. Try their lopo which is designed for fast falling or if you really want to motor their excel (but this is more expensive). Ask people in your DZ shop - they will be able to tell you which your body size would be most suited to. In my opinion you are prob best going with the lopo - the excel is really for serious comp jumpers. clickety http://www.symbiosis.suits.btinternet.co.uk/
