When there's grass on the wicket it's good to play cricket.

If the speed limit's going anywhere on the motorways in the UK it's up. Public opinion would simply crucify any govt. that tried to lower it. If I do 80mph I'm in the slow lane being over taken by every other car on the road.

Cutaway on an FF2 with no top mount - worth it?
mr2mk1g replied to Newbie's topic in Photography and Video
This works on any helmet with the ratchet "track" on the helmet and the "clip" (the bit that bites onto the track) on the chin cup (if I can use those terms... what are the correct terms?). It's really simple, takes about 10 minutes and costs about 10p. Look closely at the clip. It's essentially a spring loaded see-saw design – one side you press on, the other side had a couple of claws underneath and rises up to release the ratchet track. Drill 2 small holes in the part of the clip which rises up but ensure you're not going to obscure or damage the claws. There is room on the ratchet that comes with the FF2 – but I can't confirm that on any other designs. The holes should be parallel to the pivot point ie perpendicular to the travel of the track through the clip. Thread a small but sturdy keyring through these two holes (so the ring goes in through one and out through the other). Again the key point is not to obscure the claws in their action on the ratchet. Attach a tab to the key ring/split ring. I used a doubled over and sewn bit of webbing; my friend used a spare S-link hat. This will naturally stick out from your chin and is easy to grab. When the shit hits the fan grab the tab and pull away from your head. This simultaneously lifts the claw portion of the clip off the ratchet track (thus releasing the ratchet) AND pulls the chin cup away from your head in one clean motion. It works under a load when we tested it. The only down side we could find was that it can jam if you pull the tab at daft angles. So drill your cutaway to not pull at a daft angle. Other than that buy the 2-ring circus... I think its superior... but then it doesn't cost 10p. If that doesn't make sense say so and I'll post a picture or two. Hmm... now I think about it I can't actually remember now if I used a zip tie or a key ring/split ring... hmm... I suppose either would work. Here's a couple of picks showing the tab when finished... sadly they're not close ups but they're the best I knew were floating round dz.com http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=24190; http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=24191; -
Cutaway on an FF2 with no top mount - worth it?
mr2mk1g replied to Newbie's topic in Photography and Video
I only added the 2 ring circus cutaway because I plan to mount stills in another hundred or two jumps. Prior to adding the factory cutaway system I used a very simple cutaway based on the ratchet system which worked well enough for me considering what I assessed to be a very low chance of a snag. One good reason to have a cutaway mechanism (any cutaway mechanism) is that several DZ's require one. I figure it's a personal call... but that's just my take on it. -
It's no longer legal in the UK after an rather nasty incident over here a few years back. A soldier in the Royal Artillery, riding as tandem passenger in order to get his tandem rating was very badly injured when the shagged out main used as a reserve blew up on opening. He went on to collect over a million dollars in damages. Then the rules changed. (edited to correct regiment) and then to add an exerpt from the case: (note that at the time of this case it was legal to use an old main as a reserve in the UK... but that didn't stop the judge finding the DZ negligent for allowing it's use when it was so obviously dangerous). The judge ruled that the defendant had breached the duty of care owed to the claimant. Having considered the potential dangers of parachuting, and especially tandem parachuting, he stated that the defendant: (i) should not have purchased a second-hand reserve parachute which had previously been used as a main canopy; (ii) had failed to fit the reserve canopy with reinforcing tape; and (iii) on examination of the canopy should have seen that it was obviously old and had been used many times before, probably as a main canopy, and should have been taken out of service. The judge went on to reject the defendant's claims that the claimant was contributory negligent or in any way at fault.

I don't plan on. Seems like such a waste of effort for so little reward. Then again I always was a lazy bastard. -
could you 'accidentally' conduct a strength test on the reserve a little too vigorously?

I'm sure the crossfire is a great canopy. That doesn't mean it's a great idea for low timers to jump it.

I'll make a 50 Pound bet that it doesn't happen.... On the other hand do not underestimate the US need for oil to continue being traded in $$$. It has a massive impact on your economy and you would see frightening changes if OPEC suddenly adopted a different currency.

What's the time period South Park uses for AIDs becoming funny in the "Jarred has aides" episode? It's something like 22.7 years, afterwhich time things can become funny. Its human nature that something that is shocking and horrible will eventually become funny after enough time has passed. It's the old "you'll look back on this and laugh" syndrome. When something becomes funny it's no longer an issue. The younger generations ( for the most part obviously) are quite happy having a laugh about race as it's simply not an issue to them. It's a pity the older generations try to retard that process because they think they know better.

What's wrong with being <Country of parental/your origin>-American?
mr2mk1g replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
Of course the flip side of everyone being different from one another is the old Soviet Russian way that EVERYONE is a "comrade" with no other distinctions allowed. Differences are good. Balance is better. -
Well the whole post was a joke and not meant to be taken seriously... but the 1 chunk of land and 1 mule split between every one of the descendants would be how it ought to work if reparations were to be paid… or possibly simply to the nearest/eldest relative with everyone else losing out. It works all the time like that in the broader civil law. Say I ran over your dad and your dad subsequently dies for unrelated reasons. So long the executor of his estate has the right authority it would be possible to continue to sue me for your father's personal injuries arising out of the time I ran him over. Your fathers estate gets one lot of damages though... not one lot per person who expects a payout from the estate. The damages are for the person who was harmed and there's only one of them. The fact that it then gets passed down the line to beneficiaries in just the same way as gramma's box of jewelry is irrelevant as far as the payout is concerned.

Yeah but we're not so hung up about race or worshiping a flag. Your friend would just be "a black guy" from England/Britain/The UK or whatever term he chose to use without giving much of a damn about the matter. Funniest thing I heard on here was someone trying to describe a black guy from the UK and comming up with the term: "African-American-Englishman". -
Can anyone reccomend these helmets of the starter pack?
mr2mk1g replied to DOA's topic in Gear and Rigging
I'd buy your stuf in the states because the $ is so weak. You can either buy at the DZ's own shop or from anywhere else in the states and get it shipped to the DZ you're going to. Price on a nice open face helmet out there is about $200 (eg bonehead)... plus an alti at about $150... say $50 for goggles and gloves. You're looking at about $400 for the lot. That's not a lot over £200 in real money. I guess if you need it shipped the costs are not that far appart. It's also a great idea to actually try on any helmet you're thinking of getting. Everyone's head's are shaped differently and different helmets fit different heads differently. As for headshields... there are mixed opinions about them. -
Do it. I lived with my fiance. We didn't get married and now live 200 miles apart. Divorce is much more expensive than simply moving out.
