LONDON (Reuters) - The start of the Championship (second division) match between Burnley and Ipswich Town was delayed in bizarre circumstances on Saturday after a parachutist became stuck on the roof of the stadium. Burnley's first game of the season at home ground Turf Moor was to be marked by seven parachutists landing on the field to deliver the match ball. Six members of the Red Devils parachute team arrived safely on the field but one landed on the roof of the Cricket Field Stand with the Fire Brigade being called to rescue the stranded man causing a delay of more than 25 minutes to play. I don't care how many skydives you've got, until you stepped into complete darkness at 800' wearing 95 lbs of equipment and 42 lbs of parachute, son you are still a leg!

Congratulations to Claire. From my own experiences I know how proud you are. My daughter Caroline started jumping when she was 13, my son James started when he was 14. Both on a modified static line AFF programme. James got his AFF jumpmaster rating when he was 16. USPA subsequently put a minimum age of 18 for obtaining the rating. I tried to get her Dad to sign mine when I was doing a demo with the 7th Army Team at Lord Westminster's estate in Cheshire. The attached picture shows me asking the Duke to sign my logbook. Our teams 1st Sergeant, Harold B. Stanley looks on. My request was turned down I was told in essence by the Duke's helpers that the Duke does not do autographs. Have you ever had anyone famous sign off a jump in your log book? On May 3 1973 ex World Heavy Weight Champion Floyd Patterson visited Germany putting on boxing clinics for the troops. He passed through our unit and I got him to sign my 1000th jump. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floyd_Patterson On May 6 1990 Jeremiah Denton visited the annual fly in at Roy Ray Airport, Irvington Alabama and I was fortunate to get him to sign my 2001st jump. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremiah_Denton So do you have anyone famous in your log books? I remember your Grandad from my time on the team. We used to call him "Bailout Bill" from his habit of always wearing his rig when ever we were being transported some where by air. Attached is a picture of Bill taken at Berlin, (see this thread) http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3050599;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread I know the whereabouts of some of the team members and will be interested to see what you come up with in the way of a reunion. I won't be home for Christmas.... I am among the thousands of Americans who served in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan who are now gone. Many who survived their wounds will never be whole. Many will have life expectancies far shorter than others their age who never served in uniform... never seeing the same number of Christmases to come. I am among the millions of Americans who served in uniform during WW2 who are now gone... and it is estimated that less than eleven percent of the men and women who served during WW2 are alive today, with more than a thousand passing away each day. I am among the tens of thousands of Americans who served in uniform in Korea who are now gone... and it is estimated that less than four percent of the men and women who served in Korea are alive today, with more than seven hundred passing away each day. I am among the hundreds of thousands of Americans who served in uniform in Vietnam who are now gone... and it is estimated that less than one-third of the men and women who served in Vietnam are alive today, with more than a two hundred passing away each day. I and those with me won't be home for Christmas. Please always remember us... and those who will join us before next Christmas... That weekend I made 6 jumps, all on a Delta II. The canopies the rest of the team used were P.C.'s, Para Planes and possibly a Voplane. The jump platform was a Huey. Couple more pictures. The first taken above Templehof shows the landing area (marked by the X). Note the poignant remark in the top right hand corner. The second shows the main airport terminal. The terminal buildings were designed, at Hitler's request, to look like the German Eagle. You can see his architects achieved the required results.
