I went through Jump School in 1970. I was a twenty year old youngster. They were still jumping the 119's in both Ft. Benning and Ft. Bragg in 70. I'm not sure what year they got rid of them.... The 141 was a fun jump plane. I got to jumpmaster, a few times, out of it.... Yep. I'm an old fart! I went through Jump School in 1968 and we did not use the C119 then, C 130's and C141's were our jump platform. I was under the impression that the 119 was no longer in the inventory then. Jumpmastering the 141 was fun! I don't care how many skydives you've got, until you stepped into complete darkness at 800' wearing 95 lbs of equipment and 42 lbs of parachute, son you are still a leg!

Havard collides with a parachute

aeronut also wrote "Notice the molten Nyon around the cowling, this also appeared on the wings. You can see the only physical damage at 4 O'clock on the cowling - a small metal patch is being pulled away from two rivets." Havard collides with a parachute
davidlayne replied to davidlayne's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I picked this up from another forum I frequent. aeronut 2008 wrote "The drop had been briefed as a pair of loads followed by a stick of para on the same pass. Then due to the wind being out of limits for the para that part of the drop was canned and the direction of the run reversed. This was passed over the radio to the pilot of the photochase Harvard who thought that the plan was now to drop one load on two seperate runs, so after the first load left the Herc he started his turn and collided with the second load (a Supacat ATV). I was standing alongside the Army Officers running the trial and all they said was "Oh one of the parachutes has burst" my reply was along the lines of "The f...f....f....f...flipping Harvard flew through it". To be fair he had been intent on watching the load through binoculars." Once on a demo, a whuffo kid, on seeing my reserve mounted knife asked, "Is the knife to stab yourself to death with if your parachute don't open?" My neighbour has a loft full of antiquated gear. Perhaps 25 B4 containers and boxes full of hardware. We keep threatening to inventory it but never get round to it. We will one day! I sold the majority of my "old" stuff on e bay. A couple of items I do still have that are of interest are......... An "Aero Indicator" instrument panel for mounting on chest reserve. A leather Vector serial #11251 D.O.M. 3/19/86. I am led to believe that this container was built for Deanne Kent. Gary came into the skydiving community in the later stages of his life with an enthusiasm that had to be admired. He will be sorely missed.
