My guess is filmed around 1966. Thought I saw Sherm Hawkins. I don't care how many skydives you've got, until you stepped into complete darkness at 800' wearing 95 lbs of equipment and 42 lbs of parachute, son you are still a leg!

Any Viet Nam, Iraq or Afgan vets use a flare gun?
davidlayne replied to Guru312's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I remember the cylinder ones with parachute flare. We used to have them in our tower and bunker when doing perimeter duty. Could tell lots of stories about them, great fun. Also remember setting off the same type of flares and artillery simulators when under canopy. That was when I was stationed in Germany. Reserve drill for old round kit
davidlayne replied to evilivan's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
When jumping with a non pilot chute equipped, belly mount reserve. Under a spinning malfunction we were taught to spit to determine spin direction and then throw the reserve out into the prevailing wind. No recollection of procedure if your mouth was all puckered up! Dragon Rapide G-AGSH. Then and Now.
davidlayne replied to davidlayne's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
How long did it take to get to altitude? Did you put floaters outside and launch a chunk? I remember it was slow getting to altitude. My log book tells me we went to 8000'. Back in those days 7500' was the norm for a 30 second delay so I guess we got extra altitude on this jump. No floaters, no chunks. Wow. Very cool. I would bet that there's a good possibility that you guys are the only ones that have ever jumped this aircraft! Not so, this aircraft was a D.Z. work horse at one time. Jumped an 8 way from this Dragon Rapide June 16th 1974 at Weston On The Green. These pictures were taken that day. UNSAFE To the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean". My helmet's a World War 2 relic My boots are three sizes too big I give everybody the willies When I strap on my rusty old rig Chorus: Unsafe, unsafe, an unsafe jumper am I, am I Unsafe, unsafe, an unsafe jumper am I. One day a nervous young jumper Remarked at my great deal of nerve I told him that only a coward Would bother to wear a reserve. Chorus (above) My capewells are very corroded My risers are frayed all to hell Because of the burns and blown out panels My chute doesn't open too well. Chorus (above) I do not believe in long freefalls Ten seconds or so is enough Up 500 feet when I exit It's great but the landings are rough. Chorus (above) I don't care how many skydives you've got, until you stepped into complete darkness at 800' wearing 95 lbs of equipment and 42 lbs of parachute, son you are still a leg!
