There is a huge difference between 30+ and 100+. As for reading up on helmets, I raced motorcycles for team suzuki for a number of years and I fully understand the designed functions of a well designed helmet. But you must understand that there comes a point were the best designed helmet alone cannot over come the impact forces generated. Skydiving helmets were not designed or tested to any specifications, DOT,Snell, that I know of. They are more of a fashion statement or a platform for cameras. I would say the bike helmet you speak of would provide more protection than most skydiving helmets, but have you seen anyone jumping one? Hell no, not cool. Good helmet or bad helmet, full face or open face, when your head comes to a sudden stop from high speeds, 100 mph+, your brain keeps going and slams into your skull. It is just one form of deceleration injury. The brain is damaged by the rough interior surface of the skull and this damage can cause swelling. At some point this damage is not survivable. Unlike race cars we do not have crush zones to reduce the impact force. When flying high performance canopies we must always keep in mind, "Speed Kills". As is states, the given altitudes are in MSL, so for example, at Perris a jump from 12,500 AGL would in fact be 13913 MSL and at Elsinore a jump from 12,500 AGL would be 13753 MSL. Many DZ's around the country would exceed the 14,000 MSL ceiling on a 12,500 AGL jump requiring that the pilot be on supplemental O2 during at least the jump run portion of the flight. I was able to sneak in the tunnel this afternoon when they fired it up and Melanie Conatser made the first flight. When they brought it up to 80% a guy that was in the tunnel with her graciously stepped out and gave her first flight on her own. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I have jumped both Swift Plus canopies. What size do you have? The Swift 175 is about the same pack volume as a Dash-M 218 and almost 40 sq. ft. smaller. It is about 40 sq. ft. more volume than a Tempo 170. The Swift 225 with spectra lines is about the same pack volume as a Raven III with dacron lines. It is 50 sq. in. more volume than a Tempo 210 with I feel flies and lands much better. But they are all good reserves and without a major FU should get you down alive. I think if you have to use your Swift reserve you will understand about obsolete gear. There is a big difference in the performance of the newer designs. Not to mentions the pack volume of a Swift. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Bill had a great idea, pad your jumpsuit. There is a foam called visco-elastic foam and I think it would fit you needs. It is used in several ejection seat for the cushion and I have made a couple of wheelchair cushions for friends. Contact this place and see if you can get some. I think it comes in 3 densities. http://www.oregonaero.com/index.htm Good luck, Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Ref: Hooknswoop's post. The maximum weight is what they feel, after testing, that the canopy will safely take. The maximum recommended weight is what they feel you body will take on landing. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Safer sub-terminal deployments question/pondering
mjosparky replied to jerry81's topic in Safety and Training
Tom, this is the point if feel some of the newer jumper do not understand. You can pull off the step of a C-182 doing 100 mph at 500 ft. and be open by 400 ft. If you were at terminal at 500 ft. and pull, well you are fucked. I am not saying anyone should do C&P's from 2000 ft. but they should learn their equipment well enough to know it can be done safely. A canopy opening on a C&P will be far different then at terminal on any canopy. I jump a variety of canopies, both round and ram air. Since you have read my profile you notice I do some test jumping and have for over 20 years. Many test plans call for you to exit at 2000 to 2500, take a 3 sec. delay and pull. Until you understand more about how and what makes a parachute work, it is best that you continue to pull above 3000. A wise man once said, "It is better to be still and thought of a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt". And don't worry, you don't hurt my feels, I have none. I replace the reserve loop on every repack. It didn't come in with a frayed loop why would I return it the the customer with a frayed loop. That is unacceptable in my opinion. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Chuck, It seems that with some people if they don't know or don't understand it can't be legal. You feel like some low crawl practice this weekend, we can fix this quick. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Safer sub-terminal deployments question/pondering
mjosparky replied to jerry81's topic in Safety and Training
If you have the option, thats great. If the plane breaks at 1500 and you ask for more altitude the pilot might not comply. Just because you do not feel comfortable at 2000 does not mean that it is stupid, so please don't refer to the many others on this forum that do as stupid. Some mains are so small that it is smarter to have a larger reserve and some mains are so large, like mine, that you can safely use a smaller reserve. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

What is the lowest you have pulled? A C&P from 2000 is safe and fairly common. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
