    Have you ever tried to cut through a set (4) risers while under a malfunctioning reserve? It sounds good on paper, in the air it is almost impossible. We are all "risk takers" I would think, we do jump out of airplanes. But deploying your reserve for shits and grins would also put one in the "nuckelhead" category. On thing we do know for sure, if grounded, they will not have a cypres fire for that period of time.     When jumping from airplanes first became a "sport" they used 2 canopies. At first they were both "reserves". They would take an emergency "back type" system and mount a QAC, "chest type" to the front, thus giving them a main and a reserve.     Very few people have a metal cutaway handle, most are cordura at least on the outside. It is very easy to order one in the color you want. It would be better if the handle color is in contrast to the jumpsuit, easier to see when the shit hits the fan. I don't think it is a good idea because it is not a pair of pliers.     I would have to agree with you, there is no wording that specifically requires it. But then it is open to interpretation and we both know that the FAA can come up with some very interesting interpretations of what appears to be a simple rule/regulation.
