I think Mick was referring to maturing as a skydiver. Your rigger says Tempos are "crap" for many reasons. Has he ever jumped one, seen or heard of one failing when needed? If he answers no, than what are the many reasons? Because one rigger says something is "crap" does not make it so. I have 4 jumps on 2 different Tempos. In each case, they opened quickly, cleanly and on heading. All 4 were standup landing at a place of my choosing. Now does that make all Tempos great, probably not. But it does make 4 of them not “crap”. I think what Mick was getting at is wait until you have a little more time in the sport and acquire a little more knowledge before you decide what is “crap” and what is not. The MC-4/5 rigs have MT1-X main and reserve canopies in them. They are 370 sq. ft. 7 cells. They are big and heavy and not designed for sport jumping. What to do, look for something else. What not to do, try and make a sport rig out of a MC-4. jmo Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Is it possible for you to have a conversation with anyone without calling them names. That may have been fine in high school but now that you are all grown up, it is better to use facts and reason to support your view. Try it sometime, not all that hard, if you have facts. Where you hide the tab on your soft link is where people are/were stowing their brake line. This is how the line snagged on the tab. There has been one fatality that I know of from this. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

What he said. And one more thing, you have to feel comfortable about your rigger and his/her abilities. He/she could be the best rigger around but if you don't feel warm and fussy about him/her find someone else. jmo Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I am not sure what your point is. We were talking about "opening shock" not snatch force. Snatch force occurs before opening shock, so once again the bad is not involved. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

$400 is a great price for a MC-4 but it is not what you want for sport jumping. Look around for a used rig with a 210 Spectre and PD-193R. These will give you what you are looking for and will come in at less then half the weight of an MC-4. The toggle pressure on a MT1-X would kill an old man like you in any case.

Reserve deployment time/altitude and size
mjosparky replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Gear and Rigging
How long is this going to take, do you have a fresh one? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
In stead of a table top test, how about this. I have a little over 400 jumps on a ram air canopy without the use of a bag at all. I have over 1000 jumps on a ram air canopy with just 2 locking stows and the rest of the lines in a pouch. In either case there was not a noticeable increase in "opening shock". Line stows are for neatness not to control deployment. They cause bag whip during deployment and create snag points for the rest of the lines during deployment. Of course this is just my opinion. I have been doing test work, both drop tests and live jumps, of a variety of canopies and systems for over 20 years though and after watching film and video of deployment over and over again I feel the above to be true. Are you including your hoard of titanium rods? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
I have been jumping a bag with only the 2 locking stows for over a 1000 jumps now and have not had a problem. Keep your slider up against the stops and roll the nose. Your bag has nothing to do with "opening shock". Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Your reserve has only 2 stows and you don't get "line dump" A ram air canopy will not inflate until there is tension on the lines, there is nothing to hold the shape of the wing. Opening shock is a result of deployment speed and fill time. You can reduce fill time by how the nose is packed and the size and position of the slider. There is also canopy design, which you have no control over. Angle of attack, depth of cells and brake settings all come into play. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Reserve deployment time/altitude and size

Derek, You may be right on this and several of the other posts have some good points. But in the final analysis, whichever one is faster how many skydivers have access to the equipment that can measure the difference. If your main is bad, make that decision quickly, get rid of it and pull the damn reserve. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
You are right, I have and they did. If I do come up with anything I will be sure to pass it on to you and others. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
