  1. An AAD is not designed to save you in the first place. It is designed to do one thing and that is cut the closing loop at a given altitude and speed. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  4. In ram air parachutes you have 3 basic elements, wing shape, trim and loading. The first 2 are determined by the manufacture and the last by the jumper. Only one of the three can change the rate of decent without changing canopy design factors and that is loading. The reason you take off and land into the wind is that is the time you transition from running along the ground and flying in the air and vice versa. You want to make this transition with slowest possible ground speed possible. That is the reason you flare, you lose ground speed while maintaining lift. Tell your friend he is a moron and owes you beer. Sparky Read up on canopy design. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  7. Because it is safer to assume that and act now than to try something cool and risk another problem from preventing you from dealing with it later. 1-10-100 principal. The faster you fix a problem, the less energy it costs to fix the problem. Lets say you chop from 12k.... Well you can always follow your main. Yes, you might lose the freebag. Now lets say you decide to ride the wild ride. Soon you find yourself dizzy and starting to black out. Guess what? Now it might be too late to chop. Why risk it? Again, 2000 dollar vs my life. Easy to answer. Precisely correct. You main is a mess and you're relatively ok with it AT THAT MOMENT. You have absolutely no idea what is going to happen IN THE NEXT MOMENT. The relatively gentle spin you're in could accelerate at any moment to a high g-force situation where you might not be able to do what you planned to do--that is, ride it down to a lower altitude and then chop. I've had two--and as soon as I figured out that my main was fubar I chopped because I knew exactly what the (good) choices were AT THAT MOMENT. Things change--especially when you're out of control falling like a brick. If I can do it now I will. While a round canopy is a malfunction state will usually remain in that state. In almost all malfunction situations a ram air canopy will continue to get worse. When open they fly much better than rounds but getting them open is much more complicated. There is a reason some jumpers are still around after over 30 years of jumping…..and starting with gear like this. 8. USPA has a system in place to investigate incidents both fatal and not fatal. Like many things with USPA there is no oversight of this program. Like Topdocker said it is like the fox guarding the chicken coop. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  11. Evaluated Risk. I choose not to rely on my AAD, and without getting into a debate on the argus subject (enough of that on DZ.com) I respectfully decline to retract my original statement. "Vaya con Dios" Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  13. However, if the cutter sits above your reserve d-bag or your reserve pilot chute and it fails to completely cut the loop, yet entrapping it so that no deployment can occur, you might want to reconsider that statement. JerryBaumchen Or, if the damn Thing goes off outside of parameters, while deploying or head-down To my knowledge this has never been documented with any of the modern AAD’s. It has happened many times with mains. You can speculate about possible scenarios all day but decisions should be made on fact not emotion. Sparky I've seen two vids of AAD fires while jumpers were landing. Neither was a swoop, & one was a super slow canopy. Stands to reason that they could fire at other times, too. Do you have a link to those videos? Did you see a video of one deploying with the jumper head down in freefall? You are making assumptions without facts. 16. Why? What is your goal, just to build numbers? For most people skydiving is a recreational activity…….its suppose to be fun, not a job. If you make every load during the week you will end up doing solos are on throw together garbage load. Slow down and smell the air. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
