  1. Unless they've chosen to compete in CReW of the Open class. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  2. Why? A highly loaded spinning elliptical is a highly loaded spinning elliptical, no matter what. Does it spin differently when you're not expecting it? The only thing I think you'll measure if the event isn't planned is the skydivers reaction, and possibly a lower than need be cutaway. What did I miss? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  3. This is from the online version of the Skydivers Competition Manual. So, yeah, it looks like you need a D license to compete at the National level. "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

  5. Good plan, I like it. But, like every other plan mentioned here you're relying on the USPA to make it official. I'm not entirely opposed to that, as a matter of fact I don't think I'm opposed to it at all, but it's going to take time and I suspect it's going to take a lot of time. The other option I think, is rather than making it official, make it cool. What about a campaign advertising the various canopy flight schools out there, everything from the Team Extreme school, to Scott Miller's traveling road show, to Derek's and Chuck's programs? Get some write ups in Parachutist, get some neat pictures and testimonials. Make people WANT to seek out the training, give them a cool T-shirt so all their friends will know that they sought out training, make them the new cool kids, don't the shove it down their throats. Anyhow, that's my mostly unthought out ideas on the subject. I think it's a start and I think you're more likely to get somewhere SOON with that than with the USPA. I'll now leave you all to return your regularly scheduled bickering. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

  8. How do you know? Have you seen him fly? AggieDave handed out the best advice when he suggested that Hazarrd talk to his instructors. Considering that they've seen him fly, I think that they are the only ones qualified to determine what wingload is safe for him. Why wait? There's no guarantee that his first reserve ride won't be the first jump on that rig. If he doesn't think he can land it, he shouldn't be jumping it as a reserve. Reserves are more docile than _most_ sport mains these days. Reserves are usually landed under stress though, so it's a good thing that they're more docile, don't you think? The argument that a reserve is more docile and therefore able to be loaded safely at > 1:1 by a beginner just doesn't work. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  9. Would it bother you if your wingloading were 1.11? That's your wingloading on that PD160-Reserve. Think you can land it (based on your WL) in someone's back yard? You seem concerned about keeping your WL mighty close to 1.0 for your main, why are willing to increase your wingload on your Last Chance Parachute? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. 15. Eww. The dishsoap I use (nothing special, Palmolive, Dawn, etc..) tends to stick to everything and eventually seems to etch glass. I'm in the habit now of washing (really just rinsing) my beer glasses by hand after use, same with the bottles. I used to notice the smell/flavor of soap in my glasses, I'm sure it's there in the bottles too. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  16. I don't think that Bill said it was a bad idea to cut away your main in the event of a dust devil, I think what he said is that it's myth that your reserve will inflate after an RSL enabled cutaway on the ground, even near a dust devil. [QUOTE]The reason not a lot of people at our DZ use RSL's is because we don't want to have to get our freebags and reserves put back in and waste $35.00. I don't think we are being too wrong to do this. I'm not going to get into the should I use an RSL or shouldn't I debate, but I do have to point out that this is a decision that should be influenced entirely by safety, not by finances. Your decision to skip the RSL because it might cost you $35.00 to have your rig put back together... well, I guess that's your decision. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. 17. I've found that OxyClean + hot water works wonders for cleaning out, well, pretty much anything brew related. I use it to get the gunk out of my carboys, cleaning burned malt off the bottom of my brew pot, cleaning pretty much anything that has crap on it. Be careful though, if you use too much it can leave a residue that's difficult to remove. I tend to use two scoops in a 5/7 gallon carboy. Yeah. Bleach sucks. Ask the guy at your LHBS for a bottle of Iodophor. It's a quick, no rinse solution to all your sanitizing needs. I've used it for almost a year now and I'll never go back. 18. I tend to leave my beer in the primary a bit longer, usually about a week to ten days depending on the OG. The idea is that more crap falls out there than in the secondary where I typically leave them a bit longer. Know what I mean? I'm not sure how you're sanitizing your bottles, but I give them a quick dip in iodophor and they're ready to go. I clean them when I'm done with them, dip them when I want to use them. It's amazingly easy and I'll never do it another way. I love Scotch Ale, if you like you can just ship them my way. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

  21. It depends mostly, I think, on air speed. Air speed is different from wind speed or ground speed. If you search the forums you'll find plenty of explanations. Happy reading. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  22. I disagree. Any space on thie site will work, people just need to know to where to look. After all, you're essentially just putting up a help wanted sign, does it matter what forum it's in? I suggested that we use the Employment section of the classifieds because it's already setup and working. Any other solution requires additional work and time from HH, finite resources that I'm sure are in short supply. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
