  4. Both chutes out means both canopies out at the same time. In a dual pack system like we have now it happens occasionally (usually by mistake and can easily cause a fatality when they interfere with each other).   9. cloverleaf patterns huh? Interesting. Didn't know that was standard procedure (or is it?). Does that kind of pattern keep one 'safe' in bad visibility? (I really don't know and would like to). As to the 'loud jet noise' coming close over the witness' houses. Don't know if a 727 flying dirty at 10,000' makes that much noise, but our DC-9 can't be heard when it's dumping skydivers at 12,500' over Perris. The lower stairs are taken off the DC-9 (not dragging like with the 727) so that would make some difference as to how much power has to be added to keep the 727 aloft, however. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
  10. My take on the picture of those passengers exiting into the airport is that this segment is either stock footage or footage shot the next day. By the correspondence between 305 and Reno on the 24th, Cooper's plane parked away from the terminal and the passengers walked out onto the tarmac. This video shows different passengers debarking from a plane parked at the terminal.   15. Again, enlightening information. If it was a converted reserve into a main (with vent cuts and slots), wouldn't that have been visible in the photos that have been distributed online here? And of course, if it was a cutaway (or planted) 'main' then there would be no container down there in the dirt. Only the rest of the lines, and the risers. :^( Then why so hard a pull that the kids couldn't dislodge it?   16. Interesting idea! Hadn't thought of that. Any old time jumpers can to answer? Harnesses have never had data cards. Packs (the canopy and container, less the harness) have packing data cards. Nylon is not affected by mildew; it doesn't rot the way an organic material like silk does. It degrades in UV, i.e. in sunlight. A buried canopy would last a very long time. The data card, on the other hand, would be paper. The Tyvek cards we use now are much more recent. I don't think a paper card would be much more than pulp after 35 years of exposure. Folded up and still in the container pocket, it might give a little information, none useful in this case since if Cossey packed the chute, he would have written the serial number in his rigger logbook -- no need to check the data card to see if it was his pack. Mark Yes, the canopy and rig's information would be what's on the card, and it's usually stored in the container somewhere. Good to know it was the same way back then as it is now. (sorry, used 'harness' in my question instead of the proper term of 'container'). Interesting about the type of paper the card was. Hmmmm.... IF there is a card, and it survived, it'd be a very interesting story to hear from the rigger who's pack job it was...even if it wasn't Cossey (and thus, of course, wasn't Cooper's rig either). He took so long there because...well...it's pretty cramped in there to take a suit off, put on long underwear, and then redress again. You're most likely correct on this idea, however IF the canopy was the dummy chest reserve it was sewn shut and inside the container it most likely could have withstood many years of being buried without significant damage to the canopy. If the father's tractor ripped it apart as he was grading his property for the road that's the first direct exposure the canopy had to the elements since Cossey packed it.   22. They were shredded because they were down when they landed - this damage was NOT caused while they were in flight. The crew and authorities decided that it was too dangerous for someone to go back and raise the aftstairs. Obviously. Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
  23. Sorry if this has already been posted before, but I don't believe I've seen it here in the numerous posts of the 2 threads here. I just found it very fascinating to see the first hand tv news report CBS did the day after Cooper's jump. The pilots, FBI agent, and stewardess Tina were briefly interviewed. Something I didn't know was that the aft stairs were 'shredded' by the time they landed in Reno.   24. Interesting. Thanks for posting that. Himmelsbach was interviewed in 1988 by Lifetime. In this interview he specifies "Two front pack and Two back pack parachutes" were the demand from Cooper.
