  1. LOL,,thats a great lookin Pit! I love that 'happy pit' look!
  2. Cant offer a whole lot of help except to say that different dogs need different discipline methods. You didnt specify what breed of dog. My Lab / Heeler mix hates water so I use a squirt bottle to discipline him. My AmStaff needs more coersion and physical discipline doesnt work at all (she has a body like a brick and thinks youre playing). Also, I reserve the command 'NO' for serious stuff. If I say NO firmly its means stop RIGHT NOW! I use other commands for routine stuff. "Down", "Back", and a little grunt noise gets pretty good response because they know theyre doping something I dont like. Good luck at doggie school!
  3. Cant help ya there, but I'll let you know how the camping is near Anchorage starting tomorrow...
  4. I got LASIK a few years ago and waited the mandated 6 - 8 weeks. I got my left eye re-LASIK'ed in May. Had surgery on Thursday and jumped on Saturday. Against the advise of the surgeon of course.

    Costco...

If any of you CostCo regulars happen upon any of those nice tapestry-looking pet throws (like a small blanket - fleece on one side and tapestry fabric on the other), I'll buy em from you. They were about $10 - $15 and I only snagged 3 of em before they were discontinued.
  6. Great looking Heeler! Here's what a Blue Heeler lookslike in a Lab's body!
  7. Probably either a Livingstoni or a Polystigma. Most likely the former. Theyre Desert camo.
  8. 100 gal with African Cichlids (mainly Malawan) and a 48 flat back hex with smaller Tanganicans. Been keeping Cichlids for about 17 years. Had a BIG Frontosa but he died last year. Had him for many years. Beautiful fish!
  9. Man I wish I could get my Mom to do a tandem with me!!
  10. THat was a great fight. Although I am surprised Bonner didnt do better on the ground, being tutored by a Gracie (not Gracy...).
  11. Thats a tuff call. Ive had to do it a couple of times and it doesnt get any easier. As has been said, it comes down to quality of life for your companion. The incontinence issue is a tuff call. There may be other avenues to pursue, but if it is affecting his life, it might be time. At 14+ he' s had a good long life and you do him a dis-service if he is in pain or otherwise cant enjoy his life. Good luck with your decision.
  12. I've never heard of cropped ears being anything other than a vanity alteration... Not entirely true. In pit-fighting docking the ears gives the other dog less of a hold.. So its not *only* a vanity thing...
  13. My SO jumped with me when I was getting my TM rating. Yes, she has kids. She thought it was fun (for a tandem...)
  14. So can a .50 round penetrate the tanks at a mile away?*** It should be able to penetrate no problem.
  15. Good post Steve. I agree on the auto / bolt accuracy issue, although Ive seen a few custom semi's that can compete with bolt buns. I think the main issue with the 3006 vs 308 issue is the lack of factory match ammo available. If youre handloading you can bridge this gap. If I *know* im shooting out past 800 or so, I'll go with my 300WM any day. Its a great shooting rifle and, like you said, it shoots flatter so there is more of a margin of error if my range is off. For example my 308 bullet drop at 1000 is 11 mils. The drop on the 300WM is 7.5 mils. Quite a difference.
  16. OK, just for grins I'll jump in here... For starters, some of you should *really* stick to jumping and skydiving advise rather than offering precision rifle advice...but thats probably another thread.... The best advice posted so far was FROM A GIRL!! Nice job Karen. (Oh Hell! I just looked at your profile! No wonder you give good advice! Say Hi to Marty for me and are you going to SHOT Show?) OK, on to the beatings... Lets start by taking an auto racing maxim as applied to Precision rifle shooting: "Accuracy costs money. How accurate do you want to be?" If you only want to be $1000 accurate, thats what we'll try to work with, but I gotta tell you $1000 accurate isnt all that accurate. So, if you cant spend any more than $1000: Rifles: An M1A is more money and less accurate than you probably want. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE em, but even a really nice one is barely sub-MOA and its twice the money you want to spend. I wouldnt call it a "precision" rifle. AR15's can be very accurate right out of the box and Ive seen people be real accurate with them to 1000yds, but its WAY easier with a heavier bullet. Look at some of the Savage 10FP rifles. Theyre pretty accurate and pretty inexpensive. Remington is a standard in the industry and you can find lots of aftermarket accessories for Rems that you cant find for other brands. Theyre also more expensive, but you can find deals here and there. The Rem PSS is pretty popular. Some are good, some are not so good. Caliber: 308 all day long and twice on Sunday. You can find very accurate match ammo for them all over the place. Federal and Blackhills are the standards. 168 gr bullets will get you to 800 no problem, but if you want to go to 1000, go with the 175's. Optics: Its tough to go low cost and still get good glass, but we'lll try. I like variable power personally. I like the 4 - 14 or 3 - 17 range. If you plan to use the scope for range estimation you NEED the reticle (crosshairs for the uninformed..) to change size when you change power otherwise you can only range on one power setting (and hopefully you know what that power setting is...). This is called First Focal Plane. Do the research, I'm not going to go in to it unless I have to. The Tasco SuperSniper (gawd I hate that name) scopes are getting decent reviews and run about $400. Otherwise take your chances with Simmons, BSA, Bushnell... I'd increase the budget and go with Leupold or Horus Vision Or you can totally blow the budget and go with US Optics, or any of the European ones (Kahles, Swarovski, Schmidt Bender). And you still havnt put the scope ON the rifle. It'll cost you $300 for Badger rings and a base (and worth every penny, I might add). OK, I'll stop the abuse at this time. Good luck with your choices. Theres a lot of information (and apparently, *misinformation*) out there. JC PS - I didnt get the moniker just because I like guns...
  17. Thats definately Grace's one aggressive point. My gf or I can take her bone or whatever away from her with no problem, but if Jake tries it her gets snapped at. Unfortunately for Grace, Jake dont play that game. He will step on her head and show her right quick who is alpha dog in this house. Kinda funny to watch my 'badass pit bull' on her back with her feet in the air looking like "oh shit, I done f&*ked up now..." with Jakes big paw on her head.
  18. I used to be this guy a few years ago. Kill em all, and all that. Fortunately I started thinking for myself instead of letting the media and ignorance think for me. I did research, read a lot of material, and formed a new opinion. Now, all those crazy homosexuals / gun nuts / sport bike riders / harley guys / blacks / muslems / dobermans / cocker spaniels / ad infinitum... What group should we malign next...?
  19. Interestingly enough, one would think PB's would make great Police dogs? Cuz theyre so 'vicious', right? The reason theyre not used as K9's is because of the difficulty in training them in human aggression. My Gracie is very human aggressive. She will aggressively lick you till youre all wet and slobbery! JC
  20. Wow, I havnt seen this much ignorance on a topic in a while. Sure, I'll try. I didnt used to be a dog person. My gf and I started talking about getting a dog a while back and researched a LOT of breeds, including pits, which by the way is a generic term for about 5 or 6 differnt breeds of dog. I'll get back to that later.. We ended up with a Blue Heeler / Lab mix about a year ago. Great dog. Smart and very stubborn. We were at the SPCA looking around one day after my old cat died and this beautiful little Staffordshire Terrier ('pit bull' to the uninformed...) caught my eye. We played with her for a while and left. We were back at the shelter at opening the next day to pick her up. She is the sweetest thing you'll ever meet and unless Jake tries to get her bone away from her, very passive. Why did I want a 'pit bull'? I didnt go looking for one, just like I didnt go looking for a blue heeler. She looked like a great dog so I took her home. But PB's have some great qualities: Loyalty, great looks, playfulness. All things you'd look for in a dog. They like nothing better than to lay in close contact with their humans. Pit bulls (which includes American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT), Staffordshire Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers (AmStafs), Bull Terriers, and a couple other breeds) WERE bred for one thing, fighting. More specifically, tenaciousness. But as one other person pointed out, they were diligently culled to avoid human aggressiveness. Dog aggression is another thing altogether. Can you really overcome genetics? Probably not. But you CAN rdirect that tenacity into something else, be it agility training, search and rescue, pulling competitions, whatever. Its no different that any other dog. You have to understand the breed and play to its strengths. Jake and Grace arent the same breed and we dont try to interact with them the same way. Some of you should try to do some research before condemning something, be it dogs, guns, or small canopies. There a lot of good information out there on dog bite studies and breed specific legislation. Heres a link to a PB propaganda piece I found pretty interesting: http://www.deviantart.com/view/11454716/ Enjoy the ensuing mud-slinging.. JC
