  1. Dang Pammi! My Birthday was yesterday too and *I* didnt get e Mirage!! Congrats and Happy Birthday!! JC
  2. Congratulations Mike! You get the "big ole brass balls" award!! Excellent job of keeping your head and working all the way to the ground on the problem. It paid off in a BIG way. If youre ever at Skydive Dallas ALL your beer is on me! JC
  3. This is an easy one! Its been my favorite poem since I was about 15 taking flight lessons and definately applies to skydiving. "High Flight" Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God. John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
  4. There was a fatality at SDD today. I was on the load with the first jump student and was inside packing when he landed. I didnt get details, but he, for as yet unexplained reason, turned downwind on final approach. He struck the hanger full on and was transported via Lifeflite chopper. The first responders are to be commended for their efforts, although futile, to save his life. CPR was begun quickly and continued onto the chopper. I dont believe he ever had a steady pulse. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. JC
  5. Assuming it doesnt rain (AGAIN), I'll be there,,packing probably, but I'll be there... I'm sure i'll sneak in a jump or 2... JC
  6. While doing training at SD Houston we were warned about the "Rotweiller farm" right across the street from the DZ. Apparently the guy raises Rots and doesnt like skydivers all that much. I never had the opportuninty to land there while I was there but heard some stories about guns getting pulled, shots being fired, cops being called and all that. Im lucky in that my home DZ is SD Dallas and we have LOTS of room, with only the occasional cow to dodge of you land off. I did land off at another drop zone once. Got a realy bad spot and the only place I could get to was right in the middle of a trailer park. They had really big yards and wide streets, so it was an easy landing, but walking thru there carrying my chute waving to all the 'interesting' people on their porches was, well 'interesting'...
  7. OK, I'll chime in just for fun. Ive heard the term "carving turn" as an alternative to a hook turn. A hook turn (whether with front riser or toggle input) is usually a quick 180 to build up speed for a ground surf (swoop). One thing about toggle turns vs riser turns is also that toggle turns tend to pendulum the jumper out to the side whereas a front riser turn 'dives' he chute more and hence builds up more speed. A carving turn is a slower 180, building up speed without the rapid dive of a hook. (Youre always dropping faster in a turn vs straight flight). Just my understanding of the terms... CJ
  8. I HAD god-awful eyesight until I had my LASIK. I went from about 20/400 to 20/20 to 20/25 just about overnight. The cost is no longer $2500 / eye Sis. Mine was $1400 total (I got a group kinda deal thing, but I think their usual price is $799 / eye,,,less than a new rig). Come see me this weekend at SD Dallas (the tall packer dude) and I'll tell ya all about it. The worst part about it is the 6 weeks of no jumping! JC
  9. I'll say I agree with Jacko quite a bit here. My gf and I arent the hard drinkin-partying type, so we tend to miss out on the Saturday night after-jumping 'bonding' (read drinking) stuff that goes on. During the jump day we're treated like family, but after the beer light goes on, it seems everybody drifts into their little drinking cliques and we meander home. I DO feel like we're missing out on SOMETHING, i'm just not sure WHAT...lol. But congrats to Jacko for staying sober! especially among a buncha skydivers!
  10. Haaaaaa, see there ya go. I thot it meant SKYDIVING newbie, not POSTING newbie!!
  11. OK, this is buggin me. How do you change the little title under your name from Newbie to Enthusiast?? I cant find it the logical place in the profile section. CJ
  12. Unc Sam isnt QUITE buying me my new rig at only $900 back, but its a good start. Between that and the packing money this summer (anybody need a good fast packer at Skydive Dallas come see me...) ill have it before the end of the summer! CJ
