  1. Damn, this thread wasnt what I was hoping it was about given the title and the poster... JC
  2. I use no wide angle and have been doing just fine thank you! I would like to experiment with one before I buy one. I'd like to get a wider angle on the close ups rather than chopping off the head of the TM or the passenger. However I dont want the farther away stuff to suffer because of the WA lens. Comments? Mostly doing tandems and 4-way comp stuff.
  3. I hesitate to even post this for fear I'll be banned from dropzones around the world... I hate beer! If I absolutely HAVE to drink beer, I'll drink a Shiner Blond (ya, ya, wimp beer). There I said it. I feel better now. Now if you have some Malibu rum and some Coke handy....
  4. "Why can't we have those over here?" Simple, because we have a litigious society willing to sue at the drop of a hat, a million lawyers willing to take frivolous lawsuits for the almighty dollar, and judges unwilling to throw out such lawsuits and fine the people bring the frivolous suit to court. JC
  5. On a side note, Amy Brenahan (or however you spell her name) is WAY HOT!! JC
  6. I have a PC9 topmounted and it does stick up a little higher than I would like. The TRV would definately be better for topmount, but I will say other than having to adjust the focus point when I am up close on a tandem (as in shoot a little lower so you frame their face) I havnt had any problems with it topmounted. If I bust my PC9 someday I may switch over to a TRV for topmount. JC
  7. We have both an otter and a grand caravan so its easy to compare. The caravan takes 16 I think and its pretty tight packing on those hot days. Door is a little smaller but not drastically so. We recently upgraded the engine so we get to altitude almost as fast as the otter. If I had a choice I would jump the otter on those heavier loads but I'll never turn down the caravan on a light load.
  8. Richard, my sympathy to you and your wife. I had to do the same with my 16 year old cat not all that long ago. Had him since he was about 6 months old and he was always the one constant in an ever changing life. Hardest thing Ive ever had to do, except for burying a human friend about a year earlier. If youre not familar with the essay "The Rainbow Bridge", look it up on the 'net. Its appropriate. Blue skies, warm sun, and soft grass to Wieder's First Class Chauncey Bear. May he and Bob (the cat) meet and play together till we go to join them. JC

Thats SWEET! One of the better skydiving tattoos ive seen.
  10. Oh man, if I was going to WFFC I would buy a couple. If you havnt jumped Rod's 412 you gotta do it. Hell the ride to altitude is worth it alone! Whata hoot! JC
  11. Ya, what they said! Also, look at your history. 3 conservative canopies in a row (Falcon, Tri, Spectre) followed by a high performance elliptical at 130 total jumps. Thats a statistic in the making. If youre dead set on the Cobalt, at least go with the 150. When it bites you, it wont bite you as hard as the 135 and you may survive. JC
  12. Good, I dont feel too bad now. Ive done practice runs with tandems and felt pretty good about some of them. Ive been doing video for my gf's 4-way team and Ive only hit them once and of course it was during the meet. It was explained by another camera guy like this: "If you havnt hit them yet, youre not close enough yet." JC
  13. How many camera jumps had you done before you felt like you were proficient in camera jumping? 20? 50? 200?? Sometimes I feel like I'm getting the hang of it and other times I go crashing through a formation (during a 4-way meet no less..) On another topic...Do you have booties on your camera suit? Blues JC
  14. I have *direct* experience with both the Raven and the Tempo. Both saved my a@@ just like theyre supposed to do. I stood up both landings and had no trouble flying or landing either one. I cant really say I favor one over the other although you can generally find the Tempo for less than the same Raven. I got my latest Tempo (150) for $600 (I also ordered a Mirage at the same time which might have had something to do with the lower price). Buy the one you feel most comfortable with. Dont let price alone dictate your decision. Its your butt on the line. JC
  15. My girlfriend is a mother of 2. She got the same sort of flack. She replied that she could just as easily be killed driving to work every morning and if she died while skydiving she will have died doing what she loved to do. Her children are very supportive of her jumping. They think its great. You cant live your life at someone else's whim. And a happy skydiving mother is better than one earthbound, always looking skyward. Go jump! JC
  16. Im very sorry for your loss. Good vibes heading your way. JC
  17. Prior to getting my Mirage I jumped my Dolphin for over 200 jumps with padding sewn into the bottom of the pack tray. The pad was a 1/2" foam pad covered in cordura and tacked into the pack tray. The pad was tacked in such a way that no line could possibly get caught under the pad without peeling right off. I never had any hint of a problem with the pad. I had downsized from a 190 to a 150 canopy. JC
  18. "Can we not turn a thread about a missing skydiver into a debate about police? Please?" True true. My bad as well. Touchy topic with me but I shouldnt let myself get sidetracked by ignorance. Blue Skies Brother! And condolences to family and friends in Deland. JC
  19. Hey Zinger, I'm going to go ahead and resort to "egotistical control freak" type tactics since that is all juvenile ignorant punks like you understand most of the time, so PISS OFF! Ive been a cop for over 13 years. Its my choice to be here and to continue to be here in spite of assholes like you I have to deal with on a daily basis. You armchair quarterback every situation I am in convinced of your ability to do a better job in less time and certainly with better results. So please, strap it on and come do a better job or shut the hell up and let ME do my job. To borrow a phrase from Jack "I'd prefer you just said Thank You and went on your way". And by all means, since its what you understand, come say it face to face. JC
  20. And to think it could have been YOU with her on that website.... JC
  21. Typical cops!?? Thanks Ramon. So much for the open-mindedness of skydivers. I'll keep that in mind next time I see a "typical freeflyer" with green hair, piercings and such... I'd say unless youre in Florida and know the story, how about giving the cops the benefit of the doubt and figure theres a reason they did that (assuming they even DID do it, given second and third hand information and all). JC
  22. We do explosive entry training for SWAT occasionally. We usually build a door frame mock-up and practice blowing the doors, followed by an entry. Re-build the door and do it all over again. Of course we stage in a line crouched behind a ballistic shield pretty close to the door so we can make a quick entry after the door blows. We also play with the amount of DEXS (an explosive caulk) we use so we can apply the right amount. We set up this one charge and lined up, silly us, in front of the big windows next to the door. About a second before the guy initiated the charge I looked left, saw the window, and whispered a quick "SHIT!" before he blew the charge and covered us all with glass when the windows blew out. We made entry and saw a 4 ft piece of 2 X 4 stuck in the far wall. I figure we used a TAD too much caulk on THAT job.
  23. Im looking for a cheap altimeter for video purposes. It doesnt have to work as long as it still turns with the knob. Anybody got anything?? JC
  24. Ive been jumping video-only for a couple of months and have now set up a helmet with 35 mm also. I am starting to jump with the occasional tandem to learn the techniques and routine so I can do tandem video. I was thinking about all this the other day and it occurred to me that I am probably entering the most dangerous part of camera flying. Being new to camera, complicating things with 35mm, learning a routine (tandems), etc. It was mentioned that maybe this is the SAFEST part because youre hyper-aware of the newness and the potential for danger. What do you think? JC
