  1. Wait.... There is zero reason to not abuse the student jumpsuits till you are off student status. Better things to buy would be goggles or a helmet (but I may not let you jump it), or an alti (which was MY first purchase). 2. It will be easier since you have already done it. Visualization will help keep you focused. ME, Yes. You, nope..... Since you HURT your foot on a landing, don't you think you could easily hurt it again? The difference is I am not going to biff a landing and risk hurting myself more. Even then, I would not risk it. 3. How many tandem reserve rides do you personally have? I have (I think) 4. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  4. If the canopy above your head is land-able... Why would you get rid of it? A broken steering line is quite land-able. A small hole on the bottom skin is quite land-able. What every happened to controlability checks? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  5. The only ones I dislike: 13. Report any cutaway..... Stupid. Accidents/injuries, sure. But a random and routine chop? 19. All TI’s will be required to participate in the Continuing Education Module. The test will be available online. The format will be 3-question multiple choice.... This one is going to be stupid. I used to work as a corporate instructor and I can tell you any online re-currency test is either going to be stupid easy or irrelevant to the actual job. Other than that, they are all pretty reasonable and I agree with them. I REALLY like the idea of any tandem keeping both of my ratings current. 6. And I knew a guy that rode a reserve baglock for the rest of his life.... Reserve's can and do malfunction. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  7. Been done before.... Hell, we used to sit on our sliders and land. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  8. Update..... Talked to the DZO and he is excited about this. We might have our own C206 for the event. I have found a place close to the DZ that will allow a walking shoot where you could have almost a 180* field of fire.... So basically you could have targets on both your left and your right that you will have to clear. Current plan is to separate the skydiving and the shooting portion a bit. Participants will be broken down into 4 man groups and the first group will head to the plane. Jumpers will be assigned the left or right target and one left and one right jumper will exit on each pass. There will be two targets in the landing area each with a magazine on the dead center. You will have to land, take off your rig, grab the mag, and run to the table. On the go around, the next two jumpers will exit. Your time from feet touching down till you get to the table will be your score for the accuracy portion of that round. Those 4 will then head to the range while the next 4 get on the plane. Once at the range each shooter will compete in the first shooting event. Your time to clear the range will be added to that rounds accuracy score and that will be your score for that round. After all 4 in that group are done, they will head back to the DZ, pack and get ready for accuracy round 2. Thoughts? Also: Would you want a Tshirt? Would you be OK with a higher registration if it allowed more and better prizes? The goal is about a 50 dollar registration plus jump tickets. If we forgo Tshirts and do not care about buying prizes.... We can easily reduce that. So, would you rather get a Tshirt and prizes, or save say 25 bucks on the registration? 9. Sure it makes sense. There is no NEED for the benefits a xbraced provides when at a lighter WL... But it makes tons more sense to lightly WL a Velo as a stepping stone than skip it and go right to a high WL. As for if they will let you.. That's why I said go to an event where PD is at. I doubt they would send you one, but if you sit and talk with a rep, let them see you land your current canopy.... Etc, they may let you demo one on sight. 10. People think mine is too tight... I used to wear it loose and D Thomas always used to bitch at me and crank it down... He designed the rig, so I guess he knows how it should be worn. Over time, I got used to it being tight and it helps prevent the handles from shifting. Now, one I open I let the chest strap almost all of the way out. So, tight in freefall Loose under canopy. I can tell the difference between the strap being loose or tight under canopy. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  11. Given the choice between you jumping and landing a Velo 90 and this cutaway idea.... I'd consider landing the Velo the LESS risky of the two. Once you start jumping again.... Why not go to a PD event and try to demo a V120? Well said..... I had the same revelation once... Till an exp jumper told me that I would most likely die. OK, twice. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  12. Such a terrible idea..... There are plenty of opportunities for you to end up dead with this plan. Jumping a canopy that is above your skill set is more risky than a regular jump. Jumping an intentional cutaway rig is more risky than a regular jump. Add them together and you have a really bad idea. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  13. Short answer.... No. People claim that because they have a much more powerful flare than a non-crossbraced canopy. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  14. So with 5(?) tandem jumps you think you already know what is good and what is bad even though you were not there.... Never mind that the people that are the subject of this thread walked away fine??? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  15. I saw two soft handles dislodge just last year (one was mine) Worse, I had a cutaway handle tuck under the MLW. This will not happen with a metal handle. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  16. I can't see how they are significantly more dangerous than anything else. What problems am I not seeing? As an AFFI, I'd (currently) let you wear them.... But I am open to why I should not let you. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  17. I am not a WS flier and I can off the top of my head think of four jumpers that started flying a WS at 100 jumps. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  18. And I fear that some people will just ignore that they have caused issues and assume that having one is an excuse not to practice proper procedures..... Like watching people only pull the cutaway since, "I have an RSL". And you and I both have seen cases of this. And I have never said anything to the contrary.... But I really dislike people acting like they are a "save all" with no downside whatsoever. And I have constantly said people should have an RSL till they have a mal and land having pulled both handles. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  19. To be fair, it also could have been prevented by: * Cutting away above 500 feet * Pulling the reserve faster * Smarter main canopy choice with a WS "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  20. Love how you just ignore the video I posted of me getting slung ass over teakettle on a cutaway. Face it, while YOUR anecdotal evidence goes to your theory, it only takes ONE example to prove your theory that "it is a myth" as crap. As for Ego... Ego is only thinking your opinion is correct while ignoring all evidence to the contrary. And you keep forgetting that people have captured their reserve PC and taken it to impact before due to spinning after a cutaway. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  21. In your opinion. No, but the RSL deploying while you are spinning after a cutaway sure does. Saying they are safer is not the same as saying they pose no risk. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  22. My first main was a Raven II 7cell. Lack of control can also put you in a lake, on a highway, in trees.... Etc. I have had line twists on a reserve and they were getting WORSE. They finally started getting better with just enough time for me to land. Heck Lake Wales FL had a fatality due to line twist on the reserve What people always ignore is that you can still pull the reserve fast without an RSL.... But you cannot take a delay with an RSL. 23. Got a quote from the range to "own" it for the day..... Uh, yeah, well.... 2500 for the day. So if I got 25 people it would be 100 bucks just to cover the range. I'd have to add in lift tickets and that would include zero prizes. I am going to talk to them about the price, but that would mean I would need to charge quite a bit more than I had intended to get this to work out. Anyone remember what the old chute and shoot registration was? Another option is to run the event in two stages: 1. 5 Parachute accuracy jumps, then running to a table to stop your time. 2. Range for the shooting events. Your time from landing to the table would get added to your time at the range for each round. This would allow for faster jumping/more jumpers per pass. AND allow for half a range day fee. Another option is finding another range.... I am working on both. But would it kill the fun if you did 4 jumps THEN went to the range? 24. If they are turning left it could be: 1. They are looking at their alti causing a turn. 2. You are crowding them and your deflected air is pushing them away, or they are trying to get some distance from you since they feel crowded. I have to say I have not noticed one turn being more than another. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
  25. The original plan is your magazine is on the dead center of the landing target. Land close or far you have to run to the dead center and collect your mag and then run to the firing line. Land close, you do not have to waste time running to the target. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
