Its scored at least a 9.95 on the difficulty meter for comprehension. I'm glad it's not just me, I was beginning to think he was doing that just to make my brain hurt Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

Sorry darlin, but I was there. You had no business jumping in those winds, and the people taking you up had no business doing it. Those are my friends who took you up, we love them dearly. They, and you made a poor decision. You are right, no-one got hurt, but that doesn't make it ok. There were people all over the DZ with thoudsands of skydives sitting on the dirt because of the conditions. After you guys landed, at least one of your group (with several hundred jumps) refused to jump again in the existing conditions. You were not safe, you were lucky. Nobody is going to babysit you, and we know that isn't what you want. But when you start making poor decisions, people are going to talk. We actually thought that you were going to pull from the load at one point, but I guess it turned out that you just had the wrong gear on. Or at least that's the impression I got. You are a big girl, you make your own choices, I suggest a little more forthought. Besides, you live in Florida, there's always next weekend. I'm not trying to be a jerk, just giving you another perspective. another quick couple of points.... the winds were extremely gusty and turbulent, it was still turbulent on sunset load when the wind died down The group you jumped with, with the exception of one aren't exactly "very seasoned" as you called them. If I recall correctly they both have about 450 jumps. One of them will jump in almost anything. This is also the person who refused to jump again. I think you are out of line here, I hope you don't get hurt. I'm not exactly a safety nazi. I have made a some really dumb decisions with a lot more skydives than you have currently. I have been the wind dummy, I even once landed in a pouring rain storm. I don't always make the best decisions when it comes to questionable conditions. Yesterday there was no question. It was way too shitty for those of us with several hundred jumps, and a lot of those with several thousand jumps. You have 65 jumps. But hey......... maybe it's just me Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

open face w/ goggles or full face helmet??
towerrat replied to freakygirl's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I prefer a full faced helmet, but I don't use the visor. My Oxygen provides the protection I need, but I wear goggles under it to feel the breeze. It works out great, and goggles are a lot cheaper to replace than visors. I both free and flat fly with no issues whatsoever. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes! -
What do you check before allowing a visiting jumper to jump at your DZ?
towerrat replied to LukeOliver's topic in Instructors
QuotePost: My friend and I were down in Florida and visited one of the large dropzones. We were *very* surprised to find that they only checked our USPA cards (we both have A licenses) and our reserve card. No one asked us how many jumps we had, when our last jump was, looked at our log book, or even glanced at our gear to see if the card matched the seal, etc. We're from the frozen north, so typically we'd have been 6 months since our last jump. I guess it was nice not be 'hassled', but on the other hand it seems like there should have been some kind of additional validation that we should be getting on the plane. Maybe I'm just used to our normal dropzones around home. ---------------------------------------------------------- Some dropzones don't feel the need to babysit skydivers. I personally don't like to be hasseled when I go elswhere. I don't mind if they check my reserve card and license, but I REALLY don't like strange hands on my gear. My gear is a very expensive piece of lifesaving equipment, I keep it in top order, and I don't need someone else pawing at it. That being said, the reality is that alot of people need babysitting Play stupid games, win stupid prizes! -
I have: worked in a furniture warehouse (moving heavy stuff) worked heavy construction (moving heavy stuff) ran cable through hot attics in the dead of summer worked in a block plant ( yet more heavy stuff) worked on cellular telephone towers (climbing hundreds, sometimes thousands of feet per day) worked in steel fab shops ( again, lots of heavy stuff) framed houses in the dead of summer Packing parachutes is the hardest job I have ever had, and I've had some seriously shitty jobs. I've seen in several other threads mention of barrel rolls. Call me stupid, but I can't seem to figure out how one would go about actually performing said maneuver Would someone care to enlighten me? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

Jonathan Tagle - distance record video
towerrat replied to Kolla's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Tell all your friends with 100 jumps that want to swoop far that its the helmet not the canopy or pilot. ---------------------------------------------------------- *** Play stupid games, win stupid prizes! -
how much more heavily loaded are you talking about? With 50 jumps you shouldn't be much over 1:1. You should be able to fly the piss out of the one you have before moving on, and that should include rear riser landings. It is easy to stall any canopy on rears, so learn the stall point up high before trying to land this way. Any thing new under canopy should be tried at altitude, and if you get a friend ( a more experienced friend) to fly base for you, you can visibly see the reactions to your inputs. Landing on rears could come in handy some day, might as well learn it before you are forced to learn it under duress, or possibly have an unnecessary cutaway. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

It's already been stated over and over, so I'll keep this brief. I worked really, really hard to get my skills up to a level where I can ( within reason) pick my skydives. Nobody is going to hand it to you, you have to earn it. Whining will get you nowhere my friend, and lying will at the very least make a jakass out of you. I suggest you keep quiet and get on whatever loads you can. As your skills improve, so will the quality of dives available to you. Stop whining Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

the skydiving is good at all of the major dropzones around the Orlando area. I personally prefer Z-Hills to them all, as it is my home DZ. Sebastian tends to roll up the sidewalks after dark (in my experience) and Deland is very team and training oriented. I really like the fun jumping atmosphere we have at the hills. We have great organizers and coaching/instruction staff, and this time of year is always a blast. Do yourself a favor and stop by, I'll bet you'll have a good time.
