You are wise for someone so new to the sport.

I once estimated, using number of USPA members vs. number of deaths/year, that we statistically run a

Holy shit! So, 50% of jumpers don't make it to 51 jumps? Yeah, most only make it to 1 jump!

Slow openings and emergency exit from the plane
JohnMitchell replied to ellena's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Same here. That and a few tandems here and there. -
Damn, you're at the wrong DZ. Come down to our place. We're awash with young guys running around, including my 22 yo son last weekend. Fort Lewis is just minutes away, so we have all kinds of young Ranger and SF guys jumping here. Are you into short hair and big biceps?

Slow openings and emergency exit from the plane
JohnMitchell replied to ellena's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I haven't read all the posts above, so this may be redundant. Many of us jumped an early 80's canopy called The Unit, which had notoriously slow openings. My rigger and I hot knifed a vent slit down the middle of the slider and afterwords I had perfect, soft, consistent openings. This is one approach to the problem, but talk with an experienced rigger first. And remember that once you go down this trail you're now a test jumper. -
On the plus side, you're outnumbered by men in our sport by a margin of at least 3 to 1. Lot's of skydiver guys to choose from. On the downside . . .? They're all skydivers.

I hear there's a job you can a-two-ply for.

Ahhh, Deedy. Miss ya, kid. HB.

My S.O. and I have an understanding - he packs my rig, he gets a 20 min massage when we get home. :) Happy ending? With finger? Oh, French style???

Put up a damn picture of something fun you've been doing
JohnMitchell replied to JohnMitchell's topic in The Bonfire
Nice pics. Congrats on the POPS and the Utah record 22 way. I think the last time V and I jumped at Ogden the Eloy Otter was there. -
You are a sweetheart. I bet he grabs that rig right out of your arms.

When V and I were having kids, we were super lucky to have friends that would hold the baby or two while we jumped together. As soon as we landed, I'd say "Go get the baby. I'll pack for you." By the time our kids were self-sufficient, she had kind of forgotten how to pack. She freely admits her last pack job was a line-over. Also, with lupus, she only has so much energy for each day. I'd much rather be her packer boy and let her use her strength for more jumps.

I've seen a lot of relationships and even marriages work with one partner being a non-jumper. Usually they feel part of the jumping community to begin with, or the jumper dials back their participation. Being married to a jumper is the best, I think. Except I have to pack twice as much.

Yep, the Koenigsegg is to camshafts what electronic fuel injection was to carburetors.

I've seen the same video and talked with my friend who was one of the test jumpers. I don't think I perceived it the same way you did. When there's the chop, the jumper's body swings away from the main, under the reserve, not towards the departing canopy. But a side by side can be landed if you're careful. If that's what you prefer, sure. Do you have a link to that video? It's been a few years.

Do the tunnel. Tell them you'll be an AFF student in September. The basic belly skills will pay off enormously in AFF. I would say NOT to make another tandem. It's a security blanket you'll have to shrug off eventually. Part of your fear is ignorance of what will happen and what you'll need to do on your first AFF jump. Taking the class should help you focus, clear up any misconceptions, and calm down. When you do make that first jump, spend your spare time on the plane visualizing yourself doing all your freefall tasks perfectly, again and again. This is the technique used by world champions to stay focused for their jumps. Rid yourself of any "what if I screw up?" thoughts. Focus strictly on visualizing everything going perfectly. Then, when you jump, smile-breath-arch-relax.

I've had both shoulders rebuilt (accidents and bone spurs not involving tandems) so I work hard to keep them in shape, but they do get tired. I jumped some Aerodyne A2's a few weekends ago a found the toggles to be the lightest I've seen. The hardest part for me on each tandem? Picking all that crap up off the ground so it's not dragging as I slog to the trailer for a ride back to the hangar. That's the part that tires me out.

Interesting marketing. I figured it out to about 22% finance charge over 2 years. For some people, it might be better than carrying it on a credit card. Thanks for making a new way a cash strapped jumper can afford an AAD. Best of luck to you.

I've long known such a device was the holy grail of engine tuning. Making a practical devicel like that? Outstanding. Vskydiver's little Fiat has a hydraulically variable lift system, but it still has the limitations of a camshaft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MultiAir

Someone just cheated Darwin.

As a noob maybe Im wrong. But if you look closely doesnt it appear he did this? In the video, the main appears out to his right hand side a few seconds before he chops it. So either maybe he did it on purpose or it started to downplane on its on? I hadn't seen the video. Just looked at the pic. Yes, after FFWDing thru the whole thing, it appears to split to at least a healthy side-by-side. In that case, it's safe to chop. It would not be safe to chop as a biplane, as shown in the picture. Thanks for calling my attention to the "rest of the story".
