  1. Looking forward to paying your hard earned £100+ to jump in the UK next year??? I have read no more about it, so hopefully this stupid idea has been canned but I do agree with Matt – why not publish a history of the BPA and sell it! None of us will ever get to see it in the BPA office! Vicki
  2. No – this is obscene – here are some little extracts for you from the BPA Council minutes of 18/02/03… *** 11.3 Development targets 11.3.1 Produce a ‘’History of the BPA” display for the BPA Office - Budget £3K 11.5 Administration targets 11.5.1 Upgrade to Broadband Internet and e-mail access at the BPA Office - Budget £3K 11.5.2 Repair the cracked ceiling and redecorate the Board Room, and refurbish a downstairs toilet, at the BPA Office - Budget £4K
  3. Yeah… I have a funny feeling (and I may well be wrong on this - someone please correct me if I am) that in order to maintain Sports Council funding the BPA have to raise their membership fee by a certain amount above inflation each year. This has made it worthwhile to vote for the rise because by paying a little more we effectively get a lot more. Last year I was marginally peeved about the small increase, but it wasn’t a particularly big deal. This year it appears we are looking at £100+ BPA membership to skydive in the UK and that makes me Vicki
  4. From memory, last year there was a “vote”, but they didn’t bother to count hands and it was just passed. Vicki
  5. If only we were given the chance... The only chance you may or may not get to express your feelings - depending on how they are feeling - is a vote on the membership fee increase. Vicki
  6. Even assuming they would listen, how many of them do we reckon actually know how to use a computer let alone the internet!
  7. As a general rule, it is wise to keep the wing loading for your first canopy at around 1:1. Vicki
  8. That’s £1,500 just for a DZ guide and nothing more from what I can make of it. Now do you see where your membership money is going???!!! And I see they originally budgeted £2,500! Vicki
  9. From the BPA Council minutes of 21 October 2003 – the bold is my emphasis: 56.1 Communications Committee Eddie Jones (Communications Chairman) reported that the Communications Committee had: · agreed with Lesley Gale the annual contract for Editorial Services, Oct 03 to Oct 04; · approved the budget for Skydive Magazine for 2003/4; · noted that the e-commerce facility for online Magazine subscriptions should go live on the Magazine website within the next two weeks or so; · approved a budget of up to GBP 1500 maximum for the web-based electronic DZ guide (compared with an original budget of GBP 2500); · completed the selection of images to appear in the BPA Calendar 2004, the preparation of which was running on time and on budget
  10. Yeah, but they still manage to spend a small fortune of our membership money on it! Vicki
  11. I couldn’t agree with you more! A concise, tightly worded press statement released by the BPA, simply stating the basics of the situation would make a huge difference to the crap that the press report about the sport. I think this is the way forward! Vicki
  12. WHY don't they attempt to manage the media a little??? Vicki
  13. Looking forward to it already! I’ll be there Friday evening and have already stocked up on beer, vodka and redbull! Roll on the weekend!
  14. If you're gonna do it - do it now! I believe all the votes have to be received by Friday and the voting card itself is postage paid 2nd class. If you post it now it might get there in time... As far as I am aware (and this is just off the top of my head) the BPA have approximately 9 paid staff. They are not elected and I believe several do not even have formal job descriptions. The BPA Council members are elected. They are unpaid but can claim expenses, i.e. travel, subsistence etc. when on BPA business. I am fairly sure that BPA Judges (not elected, but formally qualified) also get expenses, i.e. travel, food and accommodation when judging. I have heard tales of some pretty huge expenses claims over the years... Vicki
  15. Does anyone have any good ideas as to how we’re gonna know who’s who? I know quite a few of the dz.commers going but I’d also like to have a beer or two with some of the dz.commers that I don’t know yet! Ideas? Vicki
  16. Yeah – what the f*ck was that all about?! Spend a load of money on a safety poster… that they then have to print an article in the mag to explain! Surely the whole point of a safety poster is that it should require no explanation whatsoever, let alone a full page article (albeit a very good full page article!)! Vicki
  17. Nope – we get 3rd party which is valid everywhere except the USA and Canada. Vicki
  18. The form I just looked at said £13 – but that will be for 2003/04 I guess and no doubt that is set to go up loads as well. Vicki
  19. OK – here we go - from the BPA’s form 104 – Temp Membership: “This temporary Membership is for non BPA members, i.e. Jumpers from non U.K. countries wishing to temporarily jump at BPA Affiliated Clubs or Centres, or for those only wishing to join the BPA for a short period of time.” Apparently it covers “Unlimited Jumping for one month” So it seems if you only want to jump in the UK for one month, then this is an option. hth Vicki
  20. Don't quote me on this, but I have a feeling that they won't let you do that if you're a British citizen. And besides, I'm pretty sure temporary membership is only valid for a month. Sucks, huh?! Vicki
  21. I’m thinking that the vote on membership fees at the AGM could get interesting this year… Vicki
  22. Not good at all is it. What really hacks me off about it all is that most of the big claims that are going through atm are related to demos. The vast majority of the membership don’t do demos and yet we all pay the same insurance. I would like to see the BPA take a long hard look at it and possibly separate out the demo aspect of the insurance so that those who do demos buy separate insurance, and those of us who don’t do them don’t have to pay through the nose to cover those that do. Since a good proportion of demos are “paid for” anyway, I can simply see the extra insurance being added to the cost of the demo and so not being paid for by the individual demo jumper. There is a danger that if this trend continues, BPA membership will become prohibitively high and people will simply start jumping abroad using other (i.e. Spanish or USPA) insurance and avoid jumping in the UK altogether. This would not be in the best interests of UK skydiving! Vicki
  23. This should help: http://www.uspa.org/news/current_news/carryons.htm and the letter in question can be found here: http://www.uspa.org/news/images/TSA_ltr_to_USPA.pdf Vicki
  24. Which DZ is open? Vicki
