  1. There already is one! It's in the "Icon Legend" in the bottom left corner of the forum page, next to the "New Post" icon. Arrive Safely John
  2. I was out there in May with my Mom - the place we rented was right on the water and EXCELLENT! It's huge, so take some company. I'll get the info and PM it to you. Arrive Safely John
  3. I have sprained and ankle once in a little over 3400 jumps - when I was a student, landing in a ditch. It's Vans for me! Arrive Safely John
  4. For everyone: this is a very important topic and the perfect place to discuss it. Please don't pullute the conversation with angry posts. People will have opposing opinions to yours - always - especially in this sport and in these forums. Keep the discussion civil and save the pointless one liners for Bonfire. Thanks, Arrive Safely John
  5. I tighten the laterals in the airplane as tight as I can get them myself. This works well for all but very wide students, for which I either get them to help me or get my camera flyer to give them a tug. I jump a Sigma, on which I have found it is possible to overtighten the laterals, making disconnection under canopy nearly impossible. The older Vector II student harness was not that way for me. Under canopy, once I have gained control of the canopy, cleared my airspace, and picked up a heading so as to stay on the wind line, I have the students put their feet on mine and stand up as I lift them under the arms. I wrap one arm around their waist to hold them there, then disconnect the lateral as I tell them that "I am making them more comfortable. Then I switch hands and release the other side, telling them to relax. At that point I connect the disconnected laterals together behind the student's back as stated above. Arrive Safely John
  6. That's why they should be secured once unclipped. Secure them behind the student's back by clipping them together. Arrive Safely John

  8. This arrived yesterday: Safety & Training Newsletter A Bulletin for the training community Vol. 6, Issue 3 May 31, 2006 Tandem Bulletin JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE U.S. PARACHUTE ASSOCIATION AND THE PARACHUTE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION Within the last seven months there have been two U.S. tandem fatalities in which the student/passenger has fallen out of the harness upon opening shock. In one case the person went under the back strap, and in the other, over the back strap. As circumstances of these two fatalities are being examined by multiple parties, it is imperative that tandem instructors and safety personnel examine and review tandem harness fitting and adjustment procedures available from the manufacturers. Schools and centers with tandem operations should review tandem adjustments for varying body types while simulating opening positions/sequences on the ground to ensure a full understanding of potentially hazardous body shifting which can occur during freefall and opening. Tandem manufacturers should examine their respective systems to ensure that unusual opening attitudes, varying body sizes/shapes, and recommended instructor procedures will provide student/passenger security within the harness, particularly during the opening sequence Arrive Safely John
  9. Welcome home, hermano. See you next week. Arrive Safely John

  11. At Raeford all instructors have right of refusal with no questions asked. The only time that changes is when someone takes advantage of it for the wrong reasons, e.g. a TI only choosing small female students. Arrive Safely John
  12. There are a few good threads on this already - I will dig them up in a little while and post the links here. Arrive Safely John
  13. If you're landing with any above average amount of horizontal speed, they are not good to jump in. You need something with a smooth sole (or at least mostly smooth). That's why most of us wear Vans or similar. Of course, Vans give you no ankle support at all. Arrive Safely John
  14. I assume you're talking about this brand of boots? Arrive Safely John

  16. I have had bounce dreams for years. They all involve some sort of gross error - a huge goof on my part, a double malfunction, etc. I have never died - I always walk away. I have talked to many other skydivers about this and find that they are common and quite similar to mine. I have not had one in a long time . . . Arrive Safely John
  17. ROFLMAO! "Wutt's a hay-low?" LOLOLOLOLOL! Arrive Safely John
  18. I have never read the comix, had not seen either of the others. Yesterday in between soccer games my family chose that one to go see to kill some time. There was nothing I was interested in so I hung out in the coffee shop and did homework - time much better spent it sounds like. For the record - my son loved it. Arrive Safely John
  19. Actually I was implying that my reply, accusing women of making generalizations, is in itself a generalization. BB will get it - she understands me. Arrive Safely John
  20. You women are always making generalizations! ox·y·mo·ron äk-sE-'mor-"än noun a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness); broadly : something (as a concept) that is made up of contradictory or incongruous elements Arrive Safely John
  21. Lockable Pelican Cases They are expensive, but they pop up on eBay often. You can lock these cases with two padlocks, and you could lock the case to something using your bike lock. It would draw a lot of attention in a dorm room, but it would be more secure than a duffle bag. Arrive Safely John
  22. Liz - not directed at you . . . just using your original post because I removed the trash referred to below. UTD - blatant trolling on your part to stir up JP. Your "I was just kidding" card has long ago expired. Your constructive contribution to this forum is infinitesimal - continue to post just to stir the pot for your own entertainment and you may find yourself with one less forum you can post to. JP - your one warning for PAs. Don't let the bridge dweller push your buttons - it's his desired result. Both of you - please take your personal differences to PMs. I removed the garbage. Arrive Safely John
  23. The first movie I saw that scared the crap out of me was "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock. The theatrical release was a little before my time - I watched the TV debut on my grandmother's couch when I was about 8. Those birds made me paranoid for a while, always looking up when I went outside. Then adolescent short term attention span syndrome kicked in and I was back to being a kid again. Arrive Safely John
  24. This is not The Bonfire, folks. Pointless one liners are not welcome here or in any of the topical forums. Stick to the subject please. Arrive Safely John
  25. Homemade buttermilk sherbet. It was a VERY old family recipe that we used to make several times during the summer at home. I was the crank turner, so I always got the first bowl. It sounds disgusting, but it's actually incredibly tasty. Arrive Safely John
