  3. I had Norton Internet Security suite for years. I kept it faithfully updated and scanned often. I upgraded my PC to XPand my current version of Norton wouldn't run in XP. I asked around to some knowledgeable friends about what's out there . . . they recommended AVG Free from tht GriSoft website. I installed it and ran it the first time - it caught 19 infected files that Norton had not caught. AVG Free is excellent! Arrive Safely John

  5. In the last three days I have moved half a dozen threads totally unrelated to the topic of this forum. Some of them belonged in Bonfire. The last two got removed rather than moved. Please think before you post. Arrive Safely John

  10. I just discovered all of the garbage in this thread. Rather than take the time to sort through the wheat field and sweep out the chaff, I'm locking it up. People are going to post if they want to - there is no number of jumps vs. number of posts restriction. Many people here have more posts than jumps (including me). If you don't trust their input - don't read it. The question was asked and answered. The thread is done. Arrive Safely John
  11. I have been an Army Rigger for 22 years and have loved my entire career. I have been blessed with some very good assignments. Coming back in as an officer, you will have to choose Quartermaster as your branch to be assigned to a Rigger unit. You will NOT spend all of your career on jump status or in Rigger units as enlisted Army Riggers do. You will get VERY little hands on rigging experience while in Rigger assignments. As Mike said, most of Army rigging has nothing to do with skydiving. There are some assignments in which you would have the opportunity to be around Military Free Fall and/or non-standard (civilian sport) equipment, but vitrually non-existent for a QM officer. Choose your branch preferences (wish list) based on the long term and the big picture - what are you passionate about (besides skydiving). You can continue skydiving on your own, geographical assignment permitting. PM [url "http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?username=katiebear21;"]Katie Blue about being an Army officer. She's a Major. Arrive Safely John

  20. Once you have completed your training and have arrived at your permanent duty station, you can get a letter from your Warrant Officer or Commander stating that you have completed the requisite pack jobs - back and chest - to take the "military comp test" for your FAA Senior Rigger Certificate. You will then get your application verified at the nearest Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) and go to a testing center to take a written test. If you pass, you're a Senior Rigger. Without training on skydiving gear, you have at that point been given a "license to kill." Figuring it out by following the manufacturer's instructions in the manual just isn't going to get it done safely. You need to apprentice yourself (not formally - just using the term) to a local civilian Rigger who has experience with civilian gear - they will help you build the skill set you will need to be a safe civilian Rigger. There are companies looking for Riggers often - I know of a large one at the moment that is looking for a jumper/Rigger to do R&D stuff for them. You won't live in a mansion and drive a Bentley, but it's a solid living and you can stay close to skydiving. Arrive Safely John
